Not too happy with this one sided, definitely prejudiced, depiction of life for black people in Washington DC. This was only one neighborhood, and the reporter didn't do any fact checking. Furthermore, when you have stories of whole black communities being driven from their homes, running for their lives with only the clothes on their backs, and then you have black people with no beds or night clothes? Might there not be some cause and effect there, someplace?

Washington D.C. has and still is a dangerous place in areas. Apparently Washington was taking after London inasmuch as being a capital city with some truly squalid environs. As always this channel is wonderful and the videos brilliant! The narration is truly the icing on the cake.

It's generally only a dangerous place if you're looking for trouble. It's gentrified and cleaned up mightily in the past generation.

Great historic information. You had to be tough to live in those dwellings, and you also had to be tough to be a cop. 10 x 12 feet slept 19 people!😳 I couldn’t have lived back then.

@susannahydro4845 Willow Tree Alley 4th Street SW Washington DC. Cleared and bulldozed in the 1950s as part of urban renewal i.e Black removal. Now Audi Field and other improvements in the 2010s and 20s are pushing people out like the tearing down soon of Greenleaf Gardens public housing

He means it’s a tactic used by the cops to keep the mistreatment of the people by said cops from being reported on directly. It creates a situation in which they are unable to speak freely.

@@moondancer4660there are two sides to every story, yes? The residents would probably be uncomfortable speaking truth with a policeman near bye. When you have stories on the one hand of black people having their belongings destroyed and then stories of black people without beds, might there be some cause and effect there? It would take time and effort to gain the trust of these people. The Reporter learned nothing but what the police believed or wanted him to believe.

Earning mo ey doesn't make somebody greedy. Many poor are responsible for their plight. Of course many social situations made it near impossible for some to improve their lot but that doesn't exist in the West today.. ...To suggest the explanation for there being have not is a black and white fairytale in which the less successful are virtuous victims and the successful are evil schemers is lazy and delusional.

@@TerribleShmeltingAccidentAgreed. The thing is, when you're poor, you can think less of yourself and can be absolutely unconfident. It's hard to get out of that mental rut and think big as you must, to be able to rise to and achieve based on your actual abilities. Especially when it's been ingrained from an early age. Not by your parents, but by teachers etc. People are dicks.

His first wife was a social activist and in favor of votes for women. His second wife was her polar opposite, including not wanting women to vote (although she and her husband marched in front of the parade when it passed). it's possible if his first wife hadn't died she might have moderated his policies, including segregating some DC depts that had been integrated and the war.

3:44 My great-grandfather Sylvester was on the police force here in washington the night of lincoln's assassination. He went all over town trying to warn people that something might happen. How he figured it out, nobody seems to know. It's certainly not recorded anyplace. But there was so much publicity about it that people never forgot him. He became chief of police, then a councilman, did some wheeling and dealing in land, and became a millionaire.

Anybody know about big ma, big ma was of this generation, and you sure don't cross big ma lol. My best friend from way back introduced her to me, and she was old back in 1990, bed ridden, but she didn't take any flack, she used to beat the hide off her kid's, and they told stories about her, and said that everyone had a big ma from the generation around wwl time. So weird looking at this I live in dc born and raised in anacostia its definite a difference from se to nw or parts of ne and sw you’ll hardly ever find white people in SE unless your in the part that’s on capital hill but across the bridge in anacostia it’s all black ppl for the most part
