Spoiler alert but the most heartbreaking part for me was when Askia's dad said: "You know what's peculiar? That judge was an elected judge. And I voted for her." It wrecks me every time I think about it.
and because the judge thought this socially deficient shut-in who thinks he needs a fallout shelter on the east coast in the event that North Korea launches a nuclear assault on the United States and keeps his money in jars in his own home This guy friggin kinned Sheldon of all people, what on earth would convince anyone he would ever contribute anything to society at all?
Another red flag for a psychopath is a child that “tortures” toys for fun. That’s actually an often overlooked precursor to abusing animals. The crazy kid that got arrested for threatening to bring his dad’s pew-pew to my high school was real big on dismembering his sister’s dolls when he was younger. Then he graduated to tormenting bugs, the any small animals he could get his filthy hands on. Parents, pay attention to your kids play habits!
Cats are so small for such a small length of time, since my cat became adult sized she’s battled with being extremely chunky. Love her tho, she’s survived cancer and has epilepsy and shit cats legit have nine lives
@Zebra It's not that it'd be bad, but if I recall correctly, she was born with a rare disease and had to go through surgery at a very very young age! So it's good to see how much she's grown and how strong and healthy she seems to be. It tells us she's recovered very well from all the things she went through! edit: I say this also because I had a kitty that was very ill when she was young, and because of that she never really grew much. She was about half the size of her siblings as an adult, but was fortunately very healthy and lived a long and happy life! We pampered her quite a bit because of how smol she was
Oh gosh my brothers classmates were in a horrible car crash recently and the parents lost both of their children in the crash, both still in school. Imagine how terrible that is, their entire lives are changed forever now
@@madeniquevanwyk oh my god both... 🥲 that's so awful. When I was in school a few students died as well and my first thought was how the parents will cope. Soooo so sad
@@nsn18never yeah i can't even try to imagine it. I would never cope. I teach some kids whose siblings committed s and I have no idea how they just go on with life 😔
there was a bad car crash in my town a couple weeks before we moved into our new home, drunk driver hit a car with teens in it, killed 2. when we walked into the house for the first time, it smelled like a funeral parlor because of all of the flowers. The woman who was living there before us was the mom of one of the kids who died in the crash. Couple weeks after moving in, we got mail addressed to the kid and mom, lots of colleges reaching out to him to get him to apply, maybe some acceptance letters. The worst one was a bill though. The bill from the ambulance that came to pick them up.
There is something super sketchy about a guy who is known for wearing a full fire proof suit having a fire in his home. Probably a coincidence but that alone makes me question whether it was an accident.
yeah, I've been saying the same thing about Gypsy Crusader. Dispite commiting a literal crime people will still pretend that they were wronged party. All you need is some dumb reason to support someone and everything they do is okay.
@@bobcatsjoe8891 do you know gypsies story because the whole "Despite commiting and actually crime" part of your sentence is really stupid sounding when his whole "crime" was having a gun on probation that he didn't even use
@@snek9558 he was a convicted felon for assult. Because of that he lost some of his rights as a citizen. Sure it's not the most heinous crime but they're not going to take a chance on an already violent person with a gun. Yes I do know about his full story. I don't really believe it for the most part as I believe he's twisted some points to make himself appear like the victim. He's a violent person who is willing to get into fights with people. There's a video of him walking where he says something along the lines of "just got into a fight. That was fun" and like I said hes also a convicted felon for assult. It's not out of the range of possibilities that he started the fights that he got into and walked away telling how he's the victim in all of it.
I think another big testament to Oki's documentary making skills is the fact the family was willing to talk to him. You see award winning film documentary directors get snubbed by victims' families because of their insensitive approach to the crimes involved. Knowing that the family are happy to work with a documentary maker says a lot about the behind the scenes discussions, and the intent of the documentary maker.
that was my same thought when i first started watching oki. i generally try to avoid true crime content without the green light from the victims family and it’s refreshing to see someone with this much respect for the victims. really wish this was the norm for the genre but when there’s money to be made who has time for empathy?
@@maxwashere. if true crime content had to get the "green light" from family, the victims stories may NEVER be told. I have followed true crime since I was a teen and I think it's pretty obvious when you come across a tragedy pimp that is trying to make money or a name off the backs of victims, and when someone wants to tell their story. I'd NEVER want content creators to bother the victims family to get "the green light" every time someone wants to tell their story. That's just grossly intrusive and traumatizing them all over again. If the family wants to be involved, then that's always a plus, but I think bugging families is just a big giant no. Tell the story, be true to the victim and don't try to sensationalize the story, but at the same time, don't censor the story either. Which a HUGE pet peeve of mine, when someone tells the story, but won't talk about what the victim went through.... Like that's going to change anything.... It doesn't, it just gives people the chance to sympathize with the killer by NOT talking about what they did to another human. It minimizes what the victim went through by not talking about the worst part of what was done to them. If you're going to tell the story of the victim, tell the whole story or don't tell it at all, but don't hide what was done to them. It's such a disservice to what a victim went through.
@@thenarrator6846 ya, not really. Don't bug families of victims every time a creator wants to tell their story. Could you imagine how many TIMES a family member would have to be traumatized every time a content creator wanted to get their story out there? After a while, you'd just be a pest.
@@Em22-wtf someone telling the story for thousands or millions to see, whether theyre wrong or not abotu details or scenarios, is even more traumatizing. true crime tubers are the pests. they exploit stories and profit off of victims and their families whether they want the story told or not
i am shocked that this guy got away with building an actual death maze under his house even though the only signs he brought up that he even remotely tried to help (the gas canisters that just "disappeared") were never confirmed
That sentencing was basically "I know that an innocent person has died and you have other criminal charges stacking up but here's a slap on the wrist. Oh, and if you're well behaved in prison then you'll probably do much less". No wonder the father says it was "unresolved". Because there's really no resolve for this.
I could imagine a scenario where Askia was murdered and the house was burned to cover it up. Lying about the canisters means he has something to hide, and walking into a negligence-causing-death scenario seems like the best way out of a murder charge.
To be fair they COULD have been stolen. I've had neighbors have literal potted plants stolen from their yards. Potted plants! He definitely did something wrong though.
I find it really weird he told him to go to the window even though it had bars on it. Wouldn’t Daniel know the window had bars on it? He spent so much time on that bunker, he’d know every detail about it.
@@Beelzebubby91 He was blindfolded everytime he went near the outside, so he wouldn't know where the bunker is, i assume he was only working on the tunnels, and didn't know much about anything else.
@@firewingphoenix8078 nah he knew where the bunker was. At one point he turned on his GPS before being blindfolded and figured out where it was. I recommend watching the documentary on Oki’s channel.

Probably without serious legal issues and hurdles, permits and permissions etc. He should’ve done all of that, but that’s probably why he went the route he chose. To avoid government interference and to avoid getting permissions and stuff.
I can’t decide if I want to believe he killed this kid out of delusion, or if he’s one of those people who was so invested in how “criminally intelligent” they are that they try and see if they could get away with murder
NO WAY MY DAD HAS BEEN TO THAT HOUSE. My dad worked in Montgomery County as an arborist and that was either the neighbor by his client or his client. Something like that- but I remember him telling me this EXACT story and having troubles working in the area because of this guy and his tunnel.
I feel so sorry for the dad, you can tell by looking at his eyes that he is in deep pain. A parent should never have to bury their own child. Has to be soul-crushing
This is such a sad story. Askia was definitely murdered by Daniel. It shows the serious lengths of how bad mental illness can get as well. I hope Askia is resting easy.
@Devon Hæbermän Kid made bad decisions. That doomer guy made worse decisions. I see what you mean, but the guy who hired a young, naive 20-something has a lot more to answer for.

Daniel was a regular caller into the Snow Plow Show, a prank call show here on YT I've been listening to for years. The guy who runs the show, Brad, actually gave a short interview in this vid but Charlie happened to not show any of it. I remember hearing Daniel leave voicemails where he would say weird stuff, and then hearing Brad mention this situation after it started to unfold, but he never had any real details. Finding out about the whole situation through this video was crazy. Daniel actually gave Brad a prank idea where he calls people and tells them he's been digging tunnels throughout the neighborhood, and he's under their house right now for various reasons lol.
That rant at the end about his sentencing is true. There are so many people that need to receive punishment, but for some reason don't get full sentencing.
@@SmartStart24 Way to bring race into it for absolutely no reason. He is rich. Plenty of wealthy black folk have gotten away with shit thanks to money. OJ Simpson murdered his wife and walked. Tiger Woods has about a hundred DUI charges that got swept away. Chris Rock beat the shit out of Rihanna and still kept his career and caught no charges. Get your head out of your arse and stop judging by race like the rich people want you to.
Daniel beckwith was so paranoid that he made askia put on a blindfold whenever he was brought through the house into the basement. He was led through the hoarding maze that was setup so that if you didn't know the way out it would literally take forever. When the fire broke out the smoke was super heavy so he had to crawl through the maze of junk which often purposely led to dead ends. Daniel attempted to rescue Askia by calling his name and screaming for him to get out but the fire was spreading so fast that Daniel ran out of the house. Askia eventually made it to a basement window but discovered there were bars on it that prevented him from escaping the flames so he stood there screaming for help then fell backwards into the fire and died a horrible death.
I was kinda disappointed in his most recent video, the fact that he always used to be impartial was what made it so good imo. The legal battle isn't explained well and goes against the angle oki takes.
It's really discerning how many fans of Charlie border the line between abnormal and unhinged, especially since Charlie has constantly put down such thinking and behavior multiple times in his content. They probably don't even listen to his reasoning and only watch him for his deadpan humor.
I remember this vividly from Blab. It was wild how a lot of people in the Blab community celebrated Daniels existence (3alarmlampscooter) because he was so smart & connected to the Martin Shkreli streams. People would idolize this man and convince Askia that he was an intelligent person who was almost 'God-like'. It was ridiculous. People were so into the idea of him building tunnels and being 'as smart as Martin'. I'm telling it like it is, I witnessed him show his explosives and talk about ideas of building tunnels to access underneath government places to bomb them or monitor them. He showed his tunnels several times in streams and coerced people to believe a grandiose identity. He is a very dangerous man and I'm very concerned that he managed to get away with what he has done to Askia & the motives behind his actions were close to terrorism, but now he is a free man. Sad world & RIP Askia & big love to anyone in the Blab community affected by this. - Elethal
Appreciate the hell out of that prepping spiel. There's absolutely rational and responsible ways to prep for some kind of disaster. People do it all the time for natural disasters and the same ideas can be applied to other scenarios without much change in the supply list. One of the underground tunnels had a secret locked room that Daniel didn't want Askia to go into. The fire marshal declared the tunnels unfit to enter, so they haven't been investigated. But I would like to know what's hidden in that room.
Mr. Ballen is awesome, you can tell he makes his story telling videos with so much passion and effort. Poor kid, it must've been terrifying and absolutely painful for his family.
I knew this guy. he was a nuisance in the Phone Loosers OF America community specifically the Snowplow Show. He would always leave weird voicemails on the show that were crazy conspiracys. Then it was silent and a few weeks later someone found the news article.
Another thing that doesn't get mentioned much. Is the size of the fire itself. Autopsies say he was burned from head to toe. Even his father said he was "Practically Cooked!" Yet In the documentary, the firefighters were able to put out the flame with a few sprays of water?
Best guess is that it's actually because he was found on an arc welder and was electrocuted to death with enough electricity that the burns charred his flesh. In that case he could suffer horrific burn injuries within a fairly contained space. Probably got electrocuted so badly that the fire spread and rich shit head called the fire department to try and save his bunker from being destroyed. Not because he cared about trying to save the guy he likely just tortured to death.
@@CatCheshire This is probably correct. In enclosed spaces the temperature can quickly rise and give you burns across the whole body due to the temperature rather than direct contact of the flame.
By “not resolved,” the guy, I’m assuming the father, meant that there is no justice in the case-the man still died in a fire, so no conviction of Daniel will bring Askia back. None of the charges pertained to Askia’s death because he voluntarily worked for Daniel and died in an accident, so the guy/father will not get justice for Askia’s avoidable death. Also, screw Daniel. I can’t believe he assigned the blame to Askia for failing to find a window without bars. How can this guy not accept culpability in this death? If this guy didn’t have a hoarder house, Askia could have fled to safety; also, if he didn’t build a pointless bunker under his house, Askia would never have been there. As of now, I can’t exactly say it’s a murder because there is no irrefutable evidence of motive and method, but it was entirely avoidable.
Oki's documentaries are magnificent. You can tell the amount of care he puts into his work & his commitment to getting information from primary sources is admirable and should be a standard for documentaries
@@johnm6495 lol what? I can't think that he does magnificent work putting stories together in a respectable manner? in which the victims participate and openly express that they appreciate his work? grow up
If i remeber this correctly he would blindfold the person, have them walk through a fake maze, up and down stairs, while also repeatidly spinning them in a circle. This would make it impossible to find an exit in an emergency.
I think Charlie missed a major detail, the basement was filled with trash in a maze like fashion, and the guy was blindfolded when being led through it. The reason he couldn’t find his way out is because it was full of smoke and he was literally trapped in a maze of trash and fire.
it's a really good thing to have, idk why he thinks it's so crazy. like a tornado, tsunami, earthquake, or volcanic event could affect like 80% of the population at any time (I'm not sure anyone lives in a place free of ALL of these disasters) , not even accounting for crazy ass leaders with nuclear weapons deciding to do a megadeath event at any time.
@@namelesswolf2625 i don't think his point was that having a bunker or underground shelter is crazy, it sounded more like he was saying having an obsession with creating an underground network of bunkers because of a fear of a nuclear fallout which is taking over your daily life so much so that you forgo safety is crazy. Which it is
@@zoenunley2725 thats 100% what he meant but he phrased it in such a way it generalized it to mean any type of bunker. He also made a weak comparison between fear of planes and fear of nuclear war. When I watched the video I never considered that he never bothered to save him due to his fear of him knowing where his house is, I thought it was just severe neglect for others but that's the level of sociopathy Daniel was at. Askia's dad seems very intelligent and the concern he showed for him seemed very realistic, that he was working for some sketchy rich guy hoping to become rich himself. Exactly! Having a shelter with some supplies in your backyard for peace of mind isn't bad. It's when your whole life starts to revolve around it that it becomes an issue.
