I keep saying this: the truly degenerate version is 15x Lotus+25xAncestral. You draw enough cards to hold the 13 Ancestrals to mill your opponent out. Far more consistent than burdening your deck with Moxen, Creatures, Time Walks and Twisters. Of course that deck is over a million bucks by itself, but it should get a higher win percentage than either of these. And just consider that it's a deck where you decline to play mox saphire and time walk, because their power level is too low.

I know a guy who played during Alpha and he has told me of the fabled one turn kill. If you are lucky, it can be done on turn one, and doesn't require you to give yourself more turns. This combo is: One Mountain, a Black Lotus, Fireball, and Channel. Play the Black Lotus, then play your land, sac the black lotus to play channel and give you one spare mana to spend, tap your mountain to play fireball, spend 19 life to give you 19 more mana, and then fireball will deal 20 damage to your opponent. Granted, this deck that is being demonstrated is essentially a guaranteed win, it wins by giving you more turns to achieve that win, not winning on the very first turn you started on. Still was pretty cool to watch.

The funny thing is that this isn't even close to how broken this format would be today. Nowadays you could just have your deck be all Chancellor of the Dross, meaning your opponent loses 21 life at the beginning of the first upkeep. The only answer to this would be Soul Spike, which however also happens to work well with the Chancellor. But if both players do this, it cancels out and the game comes down to who decks first, meaning you probably also want tech for this case too... It'd be an interesting meta for sure.

The creature time walk strategy is interesting... When I heard about this format, the deck I 'built' was 20x Black Lotus and 40x Ancestral Recall. If your opponent's deck is 53 cards on turn one (7 in their hand) then 18 Recalls are lethal, and these will require 6 Lotus to cast. If I cast 17 Recalls at myself I draw 51 cards, leaving 1 or 2 cards in my deck depending on if I am on the play or draw. Even if these are both Recall, there are enough Recalls in the deck to draw both decks, and only need 12 Lotus to cast them. In retrospect it may be possible to creep down on the Lotus count. Still, this deck was an incredibly consistent turn 1 win.

@daftwulli6145
@daftwulli6145 2 года назад
I like the black vice strategy, since it does not need time walk, and thus is a true turn 1 kill. Basically you go through your deck with ancestrals and time twisters to find a few black vice, play them, then load your opponents hands with cards using any ancestrals you still have. You do not need much, each black vice already does naturally 3 damage when you pass the turn, plus 3 extra for each ancestral recal you put on your opponent. Mana is the same as here black lotus and blue moxen. Since it does not need time walk I think it would be more consistent. And essentially killing your oppont with ancestral recall is just such a stupidly fun strategy
@simongunkel7457
@simongunkel7457 2 года назад
It's 40 card decks in constructed at that point and while you want more Recalls than Lotuses, the chance to draw all ancestrals gets too high. I think 15 Lotus, 25 Recalls is the optimal build, with about 2% fail cases (all Recall, 1 Recall+ 6 Lotus with 3 more Lotus on top, 2 Recall with 6 more Lotus on top, 3 Recall, 9 Lotus on top, 4 Recall, 12 Lotus on top). 12 Recalls are enough to draw your deck, 13 to mill them out.
@WaningYin
@WaningYin 2 года назад
I came here to say the same thing: all you need is black lotuses and ancestral recalls for a guaranteed turn one win. These other "win conditions" they're using must be for funsies, just extra hoops to jump through which can possibly go wrong.

I rebuilt the deck that got Second Sunrise banned in Legacy. Power level not too high, you sacrifice stuff for mana and card draw, eggs and lands and baubles and stuff, then get it all back with Second Sunrise. The combo is not infinite and always has a chance of grinding to a halt, as you need to put stuff from your graveyard to the bottom of your library, then need a tutor or shuffle effect, and draw, and you need to keep hitting the tutors or combo pieces as your deck slowly gets smaller. Calculating the mana of different colors is so tedious, for this deck you use colored mana tokens to keep track of your pool. Playing the 4 Lions Eye Diamond correctly is also a challenge and prone to screwups, the deck plays LED but actually does not like the discard and cannot profit from it. Never played it against anyone, Second Sunrise got banned just as i finished building the deck, but i enjoyed goldfishing it. It is a bit of a challenge to play even alone. Win condition was a single Seal of Fire that you had to draw naturally, no tutor for that one, and stringing it together with 9 Second Sunrise resolves. 40 minutes of focus and keeping track of several different variables is normal for this combo turn. Also the judge cannot do anything, if games overrun the judge can say the game will end after X more turns, but there is no time walking, it is one very looooong main phase. So Second Sunrise got the ban hammer, as soon as this (not even very strong) deck appeared and started messing up tournament scedules. Shahrazad and Second Sunrise are the only two cards banned for being impractical.

That game had a cap of 5 per card, 40 card deck, and access to select cards from Antiquities and Arabian Nights as well as some game exclusives. It did also use the Ante mechanic so those cards were playable too. The win condition was an Atog pumped to the moon by consuming tapped moxes and recasting berserk. @@WebSpyder777 you assume you would always get all 4 cards in your start hand, which is highly unreliable, and you have no redraws. AGAIN this is not anywhere close to the best. What do you do if you have 4 mountains, 2 channels and a fireball ? A stupid face and you lose, if you have 4 moxen instead you still win. It is still pretty unreliable but at least better then your version. But overall this deck is nowhere close to the best. Most decks i found in the comments are way better since they can recover a shit start hand in nearly all cases, and since you need all 4 cards in your starthand the chance of 1 of them missing is a lot higher then you think. Any really good deck in this format relies heavily on ancestral recall and often also time twister. A really reliable way to kill your opponent for example is black vice in combo with ancestral recall. You use time twister and recall to find the black vice in your deck (4 or so should be plenty, you actually do not want that many since you go through your deck anyway, and it diminished the chances you brick since you gave too many in your starthand) and as mana you use lotus and blue moxen, or even just black lotus. Every black vice already does naturally 3 damage, plus 3 damage for each ancestral you put on your opponent. In this format a turn 1 kill is pretty much a given if you do no brick hard, so the format is not really about finding a cool turn 1 kill, but making sure you get them as many times as possible. Consistency is key, and your deck is nowhere close to consistent, sorry.

Tolarian Academy even in standard got Turn 1 wins fairly often. In the state Championships I played, I had one opponent kill me before my turn, and later in the tournament, I did the same to someone else. 7 Rounds + 4 rounds to Finals (both Academy decks) means I hit a turn 1 win about 4% of the time, give or take. Turn 3 was an average win. Also, that deck was relatively cheap back then. Not many people figured out the combo back in those days, so the cards weren't too expensive a few weeks before states. Of course these days, it could not fly under the radar like it did back then.

I had seen some random mentionning the combo on themagicdojo with some shitty UW list, and it was obvious it would be much stronger in 5cg. So kinda came up with the deck on my own (with some mistakes, I played 1Maro for instance). Noone was playing firestorm to counter the lock either during that month ^^. I also came up with academia before Zvi made it popular on the dojo, although a non-optimised version (I wasn't using windfall nor lotus petals... In the first MTG computer game, the 4 of a card limit was in place, but there was otherwise no card restriction. My favorite deck involved using 4 Contract from Belows, 4 Ancestral Recalls, 4 Black Lotuses, 4 Time Twisters, 4 Time Walks, some moxes. Contract from Below can be risky of course, because ante'ing an extra card could remove your win condition, but hey: just cast ancestral recall 10 times on the stack somehow!

In short, Yes the game is pay to win. I haven't bought many cards in a few years and I know I don't stand a chance against most players within my play-group. It is not that I don't have what i'd call a fairly decent card collection. But it boils down to newer cards being better than older cards and more expensive cards being out of the reach of young players because they're simply so good, which is why they're so expensive. I believe I've said it before, my play group plays commander and the games which are most enjoyable are the ones which go back and forth and are a close run game. In a form of irony the deck I play least is one which is built to go off and win, unlike the others which are more for fun or longer play. When I use the winning deck, and I do win, I tend to feel like an asshole afterwards for having basically won a cheap victory. In comparison, after a long match, even if I loose, I tend to still feel better about the game and have had more fun playing it. So it's pay to victory, but is the winner the player who claims fastest victory or the player who has the most fun in the game?

Dude if you are honest both games have turned into S**tshows entirely, the developers of BOTH games nowadays have NO CLUE how to design a good, fair and balanced game. Ever heard of Winota, or Oko etc? No, the new Cards in MTG are more broken then ever. They had to Ban lurrus of the dream den, a new 3 mana cat because it was soo broken in all formats, and any game that allows for infinite Combos is a design- wise Faillure. Or Scute swarm, that can get to 100 or more tokens by duplicating itself lol. 60 Card Deck, over 100 Tokens with you for playing? what an insane Joke that is! no, both games are design wise Garbage ESPECIALLY NOW and that is also the Reason why MTG Arena lost over 50% of their Playerbase. When one of MTGS Designers, Mark Rosewater, asked the players on a poll, if they think the Powerlevel of the cards is too high, over 86 % answered him with a roaring yes! Nuff said.....

MTG has always been pay to win. The only way to circumvent fighting against a debit card is to enter drafts. The bad part about that is you quickly surpass the cost of just building a good deck to begin with. I played heavily from 1994 to 2002. (12 years old to 20, for perspective) I owned a lot of powerful cards, and won a lot of tourneys at local hobby shops. That really bumped up my collection and helped me improve. I was too young to travel to play for any real money, and my hobby was funded primarily from cutting grass after school. My interests had changed drastically by 20, so I started putting my money into other things, and sold my 15,000+ card collection for 400 dollars. I shudder when I think about how much they would be worth today. Even then, it was plain to see that people with more money would stomp me out.

Used to play MTG back in the day. I think it was 1995 and I was at a tournament that featured a first turn kill special tournament. The greatest deck I have ever seen to do this was just 3 different cards in a 90 card deck. Black lotus, Wheel of fortune & fielders cane. The goal was to cycle your opponent and have them lose when they could no longer draw cards. As expected, the deck won that tournament. Talked to the guy afterwards, said it was harder for him to gather the wheel of fortune (57) then the black lotuses (30).
