As big as Nirvana was, I have to argue that Jimi Hendrix still blows everyone else from Washimgton away (And yes, he did have a band with him.). I mean many people still believe ( I am one.) that Jimi is the best electric guitar player who ever lived. His continuing influence more than 50 years after he died says something here. Besides, Hendrix was a huge influence on one of the major Grunge bands. Listen to Soundgarden and tell me Kim Thayll isn’t heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix.

I'm very happy to call the state of Washington my home. It's not quite California or New York, but it's had such a strong musical legacy of its own over the years, that I as a music-lover can't help feeling a special attachment to the local cultural atmosphere. Of course, Nirvana was obviously always going to be the one picked to represent us as the "most famous", and most people are aware of others from the grunge movement (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Screaming Trees, Foo Fighters), but there's actually _so_ much more than that. Bing Crosby, Kenny Loggins, Jimi Hendrix, and Sir Mix-a-lot are all originally from here, as are the Sonics, the Ventures, Heart, Queensrÿche, Sunny Day Real Estate, the Presidents of the United States of America, Modest Mouse, Fleet Foxes, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. In addition to grunge, I'd be remiss if I forgot to acknowledge that many of the riot grrrl bands like Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney are from here. And Death Cab for Cutie is even from my hometown; I only live about a mile away from where they formed!

I go back and forth on Hootie and the Blowfish, but as a person who grew up in South Carolina, I have a soft spot for them despite them being a small doses band sometimes (and this sometimes extends to Virginia and Georgia due to living in both states for a somewhat reasonable time). I'm from Wisconsin. If anyone is going to put our state on the map musically speaking, it's a band out of Fon Du Lac, WI called The Astronomers. They're getting significant radio play on my local Top 40 radio station. With some of their songs, I'd say they sound like better versions of AJR (which I know you hate, but I hope that doesn't let you stop looking at their music). However, I'd say the one song I would suggest for you to look up from The Astronomers is "Hotel Rooms". It's big on my local radio station at the moment, and it sounds a lot less like AJR and with more of a pop-infused EDM vibe. Who knows? Maybe they'll take over the charts and take over the list in a few years. If you don't check it out, maybe I'll suggest it on the next reaction stream!

We do have Hootie, but there's some other interesting ones from South Carolina as well. Edwin McCain can be spotted be-boping his way around my hometown as well as the Blues musician known for playing guitars made of gas cans, Mac Arnold. I never saw him, but tons of my friends have snapshots of DMX frequently the nightlife. Craven Melon are also from 'round these parts, but they have the dishonor of being the one concert I've ever walked out on. I wanted to hear "Come Undone" and "Sweet Tea", but these guys jammed so badly and for so long, I just couldn't deal. They're like Hootie, but worse. Haha, sorry Cravin Melon. Somebody likes it. :)

I've noticed something interesting. The most popular bands from more rural states are more likely to play a more rebellious kind of music. The teenage Bottlerockets were more pop punk, but people who listen to that stuff think they're rebels. lol Then, you have Slipknot from Iowa and Kansas from Kansas. Yeah, its good rock, not necessarily something dark like Slipknot, but they were definitly the only rock and roll from Topeka at the time. Evanescence is another good example. They've even said during interviews that they wanted Little Rock to have at least one band with a better, more modern, sound. They described most of the music from there as "soft old people music." This isn't always the case of course, but Johnny Cash and the Charly Daniels Band were kind of bucking norms. Johnny Cash's music wasn't traditional at the time, and Charly Daniels was definitly progressive at the time, so it still checks out.

To Bill O: I thought about them after I wrote this. They were really big when I was in High School. They were kind of off by themselves in Dayton. But you’re right, they were big and that fits the state name band thing. Good call.

As a Chicagoland dweller, I respect Earth, Wind, and Fire being on this list, despite them not being my personal taste. Even though this list is probably based on hard data, I feel like this does most of these states justice (3 Doors Down, lol)! This is so convenient for me because I'm currently working on a series of Spotify playlists called "A.M. (American Music)," and it's super fascinating seeing which state each U.S. band (and sometimes solo artist, too) is from. For instance, Panic! At the Disco is from Nevada (duh, heard the new song, lol), Paramore is from Tennessee, and My Chemical Romance? New Jersey, which actually kicks a lot of ass, musically. These are my top 10 favorite bands and where they're from, both stateside and internationally. Oasis (Manchester, England, UK) Filter (Cleveland, OH, USA) Nine Inch Nails (Cleveland, OH, USA) Chevelle (Grayslake, IL, USA) Catherine Wheel (Great Yarmouth, England, UK) Deftones (Sacramento, CA, USA) Green Day (East Bay, CA, USA) Placebo (London, England, UK) Curve (London, England, UK) Hum (Champaign, IL, USA) Neat, huh?

Tom Petty surprised me, though that's probably because I totally forgot he exists. Probably better than Limp Bizkit or Marilyn Manson though at least. As for my favorite though it's, Kamelot, though Wage War is a close second. While I'm more of a core guy now, I was really into power metal for much of my time as a grade school student. Although since it gets much more traction basically everywhere aside from North America, there isn't a whole lot over here. In the US specifically, there's, there's like five popular bands. 3 from Florida, one NJ one and wherever the hell Manowar is. It helps I heard Mourning Star way back when I was very young and into a flash game called Line Rider. Getting my first smartphone at 12 just before a trip to Canada helped flair up those memories of old and I now actually know who did the song. Even went to see them as a surprise birthday present from my parents in St. Pete along with Finnish bands Battle Beast and Sonata Artica. Suffered a big grade drop in band though as it was marching MPA rehearsal that day too. My mom said that I or the band teacher knew about it in advance but that clearly wasn't the case. Still had fun though, even got a new vinyl signed by Battle Beast.
