For the last few months I've been focused on making my first commercial game look pretty and feel good. Here I talk about all the polish I've been doing and the progress I've made towards Void Titan, a game where you play as an elite soldier tasked with taking down massive, rogue, terraforming machines.

Hey all, working on a tutorial about click and drag functionality in Godot, took me a bit to learn that for Void Titan so I figure I can help some people out there by simplifying it in a video. Hopefully I'll have that out soon! Thanks for watching! :D

Always a great indicator that you're on the right track when your non-gamer family members can actually play your game! Would love to see a bit more screen shake though. :D

Hey man, interesting game! Had a few ideas, do with it what thou wilt: 1. I love this idea of the whole game essentially being a boss fight. I assume you can pause and resume, and the titan will always be near. Of course I dont know how this titan is defeated, but it would be interesting if the titan had different (body?)parts and each is defeated individually, resulting in a change of behaviour (mayb it starts throwing things or causes earthquakes etc). There would be different ways to beat the game (thinking of the speedrunners here). For the beginner its also interesting to find out how to destroy/remove the different body parts and maybe there are some npcs that give hints. 2. I think different terrain properties could allow the player to discover some hidden abilities, like, if you build a horizontal row to run on, after a few blocks the character could go into a sprint and lift off etc 3. Maybe it would be cool to have an automatic jump if you do a dottet line like n n n n n n. I imagine that being a fun mechanic to discover and utilize, and it would feel good to save material by being precise with your block placements.... okay thanks for the great vids, appreciate all of them

Great video! The thumbnail looked familiar hehe :D You have worked so hard on this, looking amazing! One tip before I forget, perhaps look at similar games, what cursor do they use? I believe your game would be more immersive if you changed the classic white arrow cursor to something more scifi appropriate, that fits the whole theme you are going for. Even better, you could have the cursor change shape if you are building vs harvesting. Small change, great UX plus! One idea about restricting the player to not stray away from the titan too much could be a "wifi-signal" effect: the farther away you are from the titan you get extra tax on your supplies (stuff costs more), slower movement speed the sphere loses some of its properties. You could also phrase it differently, getting powers because you are close to the titan. Bonus idea: Swan-song: as the void titan is approaching the environment (plants, ore, artefacts, creatures) transforms and mutates. It changes to more beautiful and rich minerals or ingredients for you to collect, that only then your sphere can beam them. You can have three levels of radiation, with the closest to the source providing more yield, as well as maybe extra bonus goodies (e.g. a plant blossoming a rare flower worth 10 gems, or a new item etc.). This way you can encourage Spelunky Gem-Ghost harvesting strategies: The player moving a bit ahead, mining and planning a route, yet leaving untouched the special plants. When the titan approaches, the plant flowers, and the player quickly harvests it before running on the route they opened on the last second, Indiana Jones style. (Extra meta-level problem posing: have plants/ore that are volatile to the radiation, thus pairing them with the fruitful plants, creates rich situations of rewards with probability of explosions. Or stuff could melt, so the getaway path must be constructed with special type of blocks) this could be explained by the need for subatomic void energy flow, which as we all know, the void titans are excellent conductors. This way you add an extra "risk-reward" level to your game, always nice in rogueli(k/t)es. Hope that makes sense and is helpful!

I do plan on changing the cursor, but as it doesn't effect the gameplay I just haven't yet done it. :) I do like the idea of somethings changing like you mentioned, could be a great addition! Thanks for the great idea! :D

This is a year after posting. But I think a cool after-effect to add for the wall would be to cause the purple haze to almost reach out at the blocks. So it would be thin when it's only next to air, but it gets thicker if that portion of the haze was near a block, as if it was reaching out to envelope the block. Otherwise, if that is too complicated or not worth the extra work, I would just suggest making it more wavy and less of a straight line... But I haven't watched all your videos yet so maybe you did this already.

I know this video has been out for over a year so probably not relevant, but you could tie certain bonuses to how close you are to the boss (faster crafting for example). That way, it's a disadvantage to just run very far away from it, and adds risk and reward to the gameplay loop. You could go an extra mile and make it so the boss' presence pressurises stone nearby and in a certain distance of the boss, very rare and powerful materials spawn (more chance the closer the boss a block is). Make sure tough that it's not tied to main progression or there is some other way (like grinding for a long range miner for example to safely mine the ore) so the risk reward choice is still present instead of just a difficulty spike.

Actually I've been trying to add a few things like this as you are not the first to suggest something along those lines, and I agree, it would for sure incentivize playing closer to the Void Titan. Thanks for the additional ideas! :D

Wow looks great so far! Note this is the first bit I’ve seen of the game The only issue that stands out to me is the eye appeal. When your out in the world it seems very dark and bland. Everything is like three colors, black and grey and a little bit of blue. If a new player sees this it just doesn’t pop. Maybe add some stuff that glows, ores, mushrooms The vibe of the art looks like the new game “Dome Keeper” which has some clean art and polishing affects. I think you could grab a lot of inspiration if you checked it out. Something that game does is switch the colors of the world every time you play which maybe that could be cool in this? I hope my advise was useful. And sorry if doesn’t make sense for the theme of your game. You’ve got a fun looking game here!

I think you are right, and I love your suggestions! Perhaps I could have the sky change color, and for sure going to add more interesting objects to the world, kind of like the fireflies. I'll check out Dome Keeper and see what I can learn! Thanks for the feedback! :D

Have you tried a pixel-art style on your font? I find the smoothed font really clashes with the pixel art style

I did! And while it often works pety well it just wasn't quite the right fit for some reason. Do you have any suggestions for making the smooth font work better?

@@Artindi Afraid I'm no expert - if pixel fonts don't work it might just be a case of trying a few to see what sticks? The font in this video definitely gives me a very "default font" feel though, so maybe you just need to find something a bit unique that fits your vibe you know?

I think you should change the fall animation. The character is beautiful, however, when he falls, his legs resemble those of a frog. I don't know if you made them that way because the world is made of blocks and when they bend like that, this shape of the animation makes it look more natural when it reaches higher blocks. But I believe it is not your intention for the character to look funny.

it would be cool if you added a EMP bomb that would stop the wall in its track for 5-10 seconds maybe when the machine is powering up again it would be a bit slower to i dont expect this to be seen by you but i think it would be cool anyway

Uhm which part of the game should you start with oh and you could just say that the titan wall is some sort of energy source for your armor and when you destroy it it releases that energy in the wall but I'm just asking questions and trying to help which isn't that helpful anyway.

Not sure what you mean by which part of the game do you start. Otherwise I like your idea, someone else recommended the void Titan gives off something special as well that will incurage players to stay closer to the void Titan. :)
