Yoga teacher here! I am really appreciating Bob and Brad. Bridge pose and chair pose!😊 And the importance of being able to safely stand up from being seated in a chair. These are things younger folks might take for granted, but those of us 65+ might realize that practice is essential to keep these skills.

Thank you for validating my efforts. I have been doing bridges every morning for the past several years. I've also found a way to multi-task while brushing my teeth. My electric toothbrush has a built in 2 minute timer so I do squats while brushing. I've been doing these for about 5 years. I'm 73. Keeps me strong.

That's great! I feel the same way: validated and encouraged in things I was doing instinctively. By the way, I read that Elizabeth Hurley does squats when she's cleaning her teeth also! She told an interviewer that that's the only workout she does, to keep up that great figure! Then she just keeps active, plays with her dog.

Be careful stepping into a chair!! Great to hear that squats can help so much, though. I'll have to start doing more; it seems like my body is always crying out for squats, so it's nice to hear the physical therapists saying it's a good idea!
@Thejoeordinary1
@Thejoeordinary1 3 года назад
invest in a good stepping stool or small step ladder! Fantastic that you can do it but a chair can slip out from under you and cause a fall. Would be a shame to break a hip after mastering the ability to squat and step. I learned the hard way. Fortunately, nothing broke as I caught my balance and landed on my feet but it could’ve been disastrous.

@courag1

I was in the same boat, but worse, I started in a wheelchair at 58 due to bad diet. The Whole Food Plant-Based diet healed me. That was 10+ years ago. I am 69 now and walk 4 miles a day. I do Asian squats and do various yoga stretches and most of these can be done even in bed. My cholesterol is normal now and I am no longer obese. I’ve lost 50 lbs. and though my BMi is normal, I want to be more fit and am striving to get down to the perfect BMi. I had to take care of my ailing parents who knew nothing about any exercise or diets, they both had high cholesterol, diabetes type II and high blood pressure. My father died of Alzheimer’s disease, my mother as well as my older sister, died of breast cancer. One of the best defense agains Alzheimer’s is walking. I did not start out walking for an hour, but worked up to it, adding 5 minutes to my walk once a week. These walks work wonders on depression. Just getting outside and smelling the fresh clean morning air and seeing flowers and plants makes me feel more alive as well as full of energy which then lasts the whole day through. I’ve found it has an effect on my appetite, not starving all the time. Much different than when I was younger and did aerobics. That increased my appetite. Try to add walking in, you’ll find it is wonderful.

I’m 55 and physically pretty fit. This past year I started doing squats, and WOW what a difference they make! I’m up to 40 twice a week, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but everything is easier now-walking, housework, hauling groceries and laundry up and down stairs. I also swim and have noticed my kick is stronger. I see people my own age struggling with basic activities, and I hate to think what life will be like for them in 10 or 20 years.

I have been doing at least 20 squats every other day with a 50lb weight for three and a half years. It is part of my training program and I don’t see myself easing up soon. I’m 67 and believe in weight training and mobility as being vital for seniors, more so than cardio. I just finished loading 4 tons of gravel on a wheelbarrow and spreading it in my back yard over 10 hours. I have no pain or aches at all!

I just do drops and then land on the balls of my feet or slightly above and squat down, and then maybe also a quadrupedal movement (putting your hands down after the landing) or a basic forwards shoulder roll, and I’ve done/practiced it enough to the point that I was able to progress to my PB of 10’5” over time, plus growing also helped. You should also do that, but just practice lower down first (maybe a foot or 2) and then go up slightly higher if what you currently do is free and you’re ready for it. As for the roll, just search up tutorials on that and learn it properly on grass on flat ground and make sure to roll over the right parts so that nothing hurts, and then do it slowly on harder surfaces soon after that so that you can really feel where it hurts and make sure to avoid that. Thank you, Bob and Brad. Please keep doing these inspiring videos for many more years. From my mid 60s vantage point your light-hearted approach to dealing with inevitable age-related decline is much appreciated. Your exercise and stretching tips are helpful, and your friendly and good-humoured delivery always provide a positive psychological boost. Upon first retiring I started exercising aggressively, thinking that intense effort was the only way to limit the reduction of fitness due to age. Ironically, excessive exercising did more harm than good, causing lower back issues to occur. Your videos are teaching me the value of going slow and steady to maintain strength and mobility for the long haul.

I was very active for the majority of my life, I was heavy into lifting weights, going to the gym etc., I gave that all up in my late 40's. Now in my 60's, I find the squat the best exercise for keeping my legs and back strong. As a chef, I am required to lift up to 40lbs. Squats are amazing for this as well. I use my kitchen sink, placing my hands on each side, and squat for a perfect 90-degree angle. I do not use the sink to lift, I use my legs but it's just nice to know I have a grip, good form and support should I need it. I do that same 'in bed' (butt lift) exercise each morning and it also helps the tummy muscles! I also do leg lifts and spins for my hip flexors and a good fetal position hold to stretch my back, all before I get out of bed! I really love you guys!!

Sorry for the mistakes in my post, this crazy making disease also affected my brain. Scientists still have no answers for Chronic Fatigue Immune System Dysfunction (CFIDS,) but are learning people with long term effects from Covid-19 (Long Covid) have the same or similar symptoms as CFIDS. Hopefully this will help people like me. I've focused on super nutrition and exercise my whole life, but it did not spare me from CFIDS. Exercise is important for a strong immune system, and your video is definitely helping my motivation to keep going to keep improving. 💪

I love 💞 you guys! I exercised with Jack Lalanne in the late '60s, early '70s. I'll be 72 within a month. Being able to do single leg squats helped me tremendously a few weeks ago when I had a few days of sciatic pain. My 52 year old son was shocked a year ago when I could do single leg squats. 😂 He was also shocked a few years ago when I was able to balance on one leg for 45 seconds with my eyes closed. I've lost some seconds on that so I'm working back up to it. 😉

Thank you… I feel that awareness inside the body is extremely important for exercise and healing. I have found that focusing on the belly button and leading any big movement from there automatically helps with balance. If one remains in ones head then these exercises will strengthen but not necessarily assist with balancing. It’s all on the inside! Thanks guys!
