What an amazing honor to get my blade on DBK! I'm so glad you like it and put the Ares through the test. And it earned its namesake God of War against battoning arguments. Starting a fire in the rain was phenomenal, yall hit right on the mark on how I designed it. The "Ramp" catches a ferro rod and showers sparks directly into your tender. Absolutely awesome seeing yall use it! Once again a HUGE THANK YOU DBK for reviewing my Work Tuff Gear Hemlock Ares! Yall Rock! 😁🤘
Hey, your design looks great! Can you tell me something about the steel. Is it similar to sleipner or A2 tool steel? Or Is it a powder steel? The edge holds up really good!
Work Tuff Gear knives are freaking awesome. They've quietly been going about business producing some of the most well built and best value hard use knife around. I have a Voyager, all around most versatile best camp knife I've ever used. Thanks for the great videos lads.. Dutch Masters Bushcraft styling..
Thank you boys! Work Tuff makes some truly great knives. Love them. If they were easier to get, I'd need two more refrigerator sized mechanics tool boxes to store my knives in!
I’ve been hearing about them and this video made me think I better get a few of those. Once again I chose something that, like you said appears to be difficult to source. Creely, TRC, GEC, and now WTG.
Love wt knives. I'm a big user of puma knives and I was hoping that you could test some of their lardge blades and see how they hold up with your use. Great show, keep it up! 👏 👏🔪🇨🇦
IMO, anybody that comments about not batoning with a knife is kinda missing the point here. I love the abusive testing, because the whole appeal of a really tough knife is that it can stand up to a certain level of misuse. I think the versatility of knives, the amount of "wrong" uses they can accomplish in a pinch, is one of the main reasons they've been a staple of almost every tool set in human history.
Hey Tom, Thanks a lot! our give-away is for our patreons who join the royal knife club. there is a link in the description. Stay sharp and thanks a lot for considering!
Even dull it will never fail to split an object- the dulled edge will create a forced cone of air ahead of the blade that will pierce through anything it comes towards 😅
Work Tuff makes awesome knives. I wish they would change two things. 1st, it would be nice if they put handguards on their Bowie style knives. 2nd, their knives are almost always out of stock.
Came here to say the same. I have been lusting after this knife since the first time I saw it, which feels like years at this point. But its somewhat rare in their rotation and seems to just be perpetually out of stock. Even now, I checked their site, they have like 3 to 5 variants of the ARES out on there and every last one is out of stock for this month.
@@derek9217psssht, don‘t tell the date of the release day from the new batches WTG knives, then they will be sold out in minutes ! Please keep this like a secret !
Brother Joe-X could not break it! I am very happy to see you doing a test on this brand. They have MANY more models, smaller ones too that might fit the bill better for the DBK style of knife use. Check them out!
Really strong looking knife and amazing testing! If you want to see it's true life force deep inside the blade, send it to legendary youtuber JoeX !!! A combined testing on the same blade from both of you would be epic.
I looked up the steel says its biggest use is for the blades in things like wood chippers not very glamorous but you don't often hear about them breaking
Love it. My main garden tool is a British MOD knife aka 'the pig.' It gets used as a knife, a machete, a spade, an axe, and a couple of times as a hammer. Accidentally hit a truck axle when clearing thick brambles and it chipped a little, similar to what happened with the steel abusing tasks here. But the MOD only cost me £54. Would love to see you do a destruction test on one?!
G'day guys, that is exactly what a "survival knife" should be, if anyone ever uses that term, just point 'em to this one. Needs a dangler though. And I'd still be carrying a "little" ; ) 5-6 in. secondary and a saw. I'm afraid to look at the price, but that aside, f'n awesome !!!!! many thanks for the look. Cheers Duke. P.S. apologies if I missed it, but did you mention the actual weight ? ........not that I really care for such a worthy tool, ........ just for comparison to a hatchet.
Best video you’ve made in a long time. Destruction is more fun than bushcraft. That size knife and a smaller companion knife are in my pack, all the time. Two knife system is what I’ve settled on after years of trying to find the one. Big giant knife is so practical and way more fun. I actually say Hulk Smash when I swing my baton. My favorite combo is Bravo3 and Bark River Bushcrafter in 3V. I hate nipping at wood with a small blade, just span it and smash it with a 12 inch wedge. Anyways thanks for a good video. Enjoyed it.
That is a cool knife. Tough bastard as well. I must say it is thanks you guys that I now own a Fällkniven A1. I have even already fed it my blood so it knows who its master is...
Gurkha Kukri Plus : I definitely think they are the only 'big knifes' justified.. because sooo much more efficient, and versatile ! Mine is the steel 01 version, (wouldn't mind the 3V or a futur Magnacut?) version.. but to steep price. But perhaps to consider by those who are otherwise seduced by "classic hu-huge- ridiculous formfactors but would never end up find use for those.)
Beeing a hunter this knife would be a great choice as a "Standhauer" a heavy utility workknife for building a screen or elevated seat, even for processing a shot wildboar I think it even exceeds the abilities of the Legendary PUMA Waidblatt :D AWESOME!
Thing is, this second generation Ares knife is made out of Böhler K329 steel, which is way worse than the original Böhler K340. They corrected some minor problems (like the sharp bottom of the handle) but also raised the price, and changed the steel for a mid-range option, instead of a pretty good one. I won't buy it. No, thanks! They also did it with the Work Tuff Gear Forester knife. The design has been modified a bit, but they dumped the freakin good K340 steel for the mid-range SK85 (which is more stainless, than the original carbon steel). In that case, this choice is understandable - at least.
Well, the argument that you shouldn't baton with a knife, depends upon.. the knife! As with any generalization, there can be exceptions. This "knife" challenges the definition of what a knife is. If there are no limitations, then sure, this is a knife. Knives of smaller dimensions can certainly be effective at batoning. But there is a reasonable limit to smallness too. One "famous" outdoorsman claims to use a small Puuka knife for almost everything. However, this large knife, for what it is, is priced on the high side of reasonable. So if you really want to lug it around in place of a more reasonably-sized bush-craft knife (which can still baton), then...it's your money. So why not? I'd rather a more normal sized knife AND a hatchet or smaller axe. I haven't watched this channel enough to see them break many knives while batoning. But I've never broken any knife which common sense and experience told me I could use for batoning. Again, the price seems fairly reasonable for what it is. There are other very large knives with thick blades, good steels, and sharp edges.
A California First Nation showed off their knapping skills making huge volcanic glass blades. They were utterly useless. Some African peoples grow huge yams . Also to show off with no nutritional value. Why do I have this desire to buy another Mora #1 With the red handle? ChrisK
Great vid boys....when your survival knife can take such abuse, imagine how long it'd stay functional and reliable in real World use? They're really great prices too. Its a keep in your 4x4 or on your quad knife.
Hi DBK, wat denken jullie van Sanrenmu S708 ? Gewoon een eenvoudig klein vaststaand mes. Niks bijzonders maar gewoon erg fijn. Hi DBK, what are your thoughts about Sanrenmu S708 ? Just a simple small fixed blade knife. Nothing special but just nice.
Yes'rrr, you fellas really should checkout all of WTG knives entire line-up as I can very confidently say that each and every one of their knives can take this level of abuse and still continue to function but not only that they've collaborated with so many incredible knife designers that you literally cannot own just one WTG there are so many badass designs from bushcraft knives to dozens of medium to large and really large choppers! They have something for everyone and for every task or knife needs so if you're unable to find one that appeals to you you're simply not looking hard enough lol-ol-ol I myself own roughly 30 WTG knives right now and I beat the snot out of them all any chance that I get because it is just damned impressive and fun....
It would be nice to see how that blade works on bamboo. Could this be a rational alternative to a Malaysian parang were one to be in that region of the world? Yeah, I know...... I'm always thinking outside the box. But I like this bruiser of a knife; considering I hate "Big" knives.
Ever since I played Far Cry 3 the first time some years ago I have wished I could get the 'machete' that is the main knife in the game for real. Other than a couple of one off customs I have seen - which still weren't exactly right - I have never seen a knife that I thought really looked like it - until now. There are a couple from Tops that might come close and the Ares still isn't exactly the same but it is the closest I have seen just in overall shape and design. I can't justify, to myself, dropping $300 on a knife but if I were going to it would probably be this one.
Guys can you end the video After you restored a Little the knife like you did a while ago? Just like getting rid of the Edge problems, giving the knife a mirror polish again. Appreciate it
What about both of you pick yours favourite survival knifes and go to the nature for 1-2 days try tu survive 😁 build some shelter for the night try to hunt or catch some fish. I think that would be amazing video 😅
I tend to agree that the Ares is not the best choice for a survival knife because of its weight and dexterity. Yes, it will chop and split wood but that's not all a survival knife might have to do. you might have to skin small game, clean fish or birds and make small traps to catch such game. A smaller, lighter blade would be my choice, still capable of chopping small saplings to build shelter and split wood if wet but far better and the more delicate tasks.
Would love to see their Wolverine knife, they have a few designs that are more on the practical side of the spectrum than the buster sword here, but damn it’s friggen cool.
as much as that's an awesome performing and looking knife i think it must have been designed for Andrea the Giant. you'd need to be his size to be able to continually wield that fucker.
Hiya guys, you both must feel chuffed that the so called big guys listen too u about certain things to do with edges of certain kinds of knives, big respect guys...
I have a Japanese nata that can accomplish all of this and is far more comfortable. I am a big fan of Japanese steel. That pretty much explains why I liked cold steel knives back in the day.
Work tuff knife are awesome, and I will not bother to put a 4 inch knife in my back pack or carrying just 1 or 2 cutting tools that is crazy talk #WTP1776
Effing beast blade, I want one, it should be in every household to deter all things from breaking down, lest they meet their demise at the edge of the mighty Ares, whether it's furniture, toilets, televisions, all the things.
Yes work tuff has a great heat treat. But the reason its going through steel with little damage is far more to do with its edge geometry than the heat treat. It has a very obtuse geometry. I know cuz i have one.
Hello Maarten and Mikkie, can't believe I made it first, stranger things have happened! Keep up the good work and vids... Good blade for sure! Be safe and take care, "God Bless", sincerely, Randy. 😇🙏👊 P.S.: Hope all's well with everyone/thing!
did you know that if you make "feathers" with your knife tip up they will curl in one direction and, if you hold the knife tip down they will curl in the opisite direction?
Waren unsere Vorfahren uns im Holzspalten überlegen? Hey, mal unter uns: Wäre es nicht klüger, zum Spalten eines derartigen Holzscheites eine Axt zu verwenden? Were our ancestors superior to us in splitting wood? Hey, just between us: Wouldn't it be wiser to use an axe to split a log like this?
