That was a forgivable shadow though because people would have expected "lights" and stuff in a nightclub.

I find it kinda funny that newer shows, even with better editing technology, have as many, if not more, bloopers left in the final edits. I guess the mic wanted to be seen. And to that mic I say...Okay Boomer!

Wow, I didn't notice that until you pointed it out. And I have watched that episode so many times. This the episode that made me know my daughter loves the show. When she was little she said to me you know what I like and I was expecting candy ice cream, no she said I liked it when Lucy snuck her baby onto the show and she was in front of the Moon with the feather on her head. I immediately knew that she liked the episode the Indian show and she was only three years old at the time. I knew we had a I Love Lucy fan for life. I did forward this clip to her. She's 27 now and still loves the show

To be fair, the shadow of the microphone was at the Tropicana, perhaps it fits right in to be shown there so the audience at the club can hear the performances better which really wouldn't be a blooper...

i'm curious if it appeared on the original film before it was cleaned up for DVDs...that has happened on many color movies and TV so it is possible the shadow didn't show up on the original footage or on B&W TVs

Probably wouldn't notice it on a small screen, tube driven, black and white, over the airwaves, rabbit ears or roof antenna, television set in the 1950's. My dad said they did commercials live back then and the mistakes were great comedy.

Being that it is such a long take and there were so many people on set, it was probably too costly to stage the scene over. The singer has lines but her speaking voice does not project as well as the rest of the casts trained stage voices. Having to move the boom in closer was probably done on the spot by the operator when he could not get a good reading with the hope that the director would call for a re-staging, but this didn't happen

Now that you pointed it out I can not take my eyes off of it. I imagine that at the production rates that network television operated at that time, where there were as many as 39 episodes produced per television season as opposed to the anemic 18 shows of today, it was impossible to eradicate all the mishaps that inevitably occur in the course of preparing the show for the public.

You should do a video about the famous "Uh oh!", said to have been Lucy's mother in the audience for every episode, but actually, part of the canned laughter. I've heard the same "uh oh" on other sitcoms, such as My Three Sons, and it's prominent in "Lucy Goes To Sun Valley", in a location scene with Lucy and Fernando Lamas. No audience present, yet it's still there. Uh oh! "Lucy, you got some 'splainin' to do!"

Years ago, my great grandmother loved i love Lucy and she would watch it all the time, thats how I started watching the show. The best part was, she was from Sicily, and she couldn't understand or speak any English, but she would watch the show and laugh hysterically. I would watch it with her just to hear her laugh. But her and I could communicate very well, i didn't understand Italian and she didn't understand English but we always knew what each other was talking about. She was the best, i was 11 when she passed away back in 1975, i loved her and still do so much.

I like this episode too. I think it is one of The Episodes that's set The Desi Arnaz Orchestra apart from Other Latin Bands of the time. I don't know if you know it (in the movie Bataan it especially focuses on it), but, Desi not only liked Latin Music but liked Big Band American Swing Music. This is evident in this episode (in which They're Singing & Playing Pass That Peace Pipe). Desi, Marcos & The Musicians also did others songs, such as when Lucy has drops put in her eyes. Not only these, but , even in Latin Music Numbers, you can hear Sax Section Leads/Follows, as was the style/The Big Band Swing Era. Also, it's evident in The TV Version Of The Lady In Red in Cuban Pals (It's while Ethel & Lucy are disguised as a couple of Scrub Women). Check it out (The Record Version isn't as Swingy/Jazzed Up).

I once saw a clip of Lucy completely unhinged because there was a mystery shadow in a 1967 (8?) segment/extra from The Lucy Show. I used to watch the Norman Lear stuff from the 70s and mic shadows were common.

BTW Rick, I meant to make the following comment on your video about Little Ricky saving the show (or something like that). The all-time best part is at the end when Ricky ask, "who's taking care of the baby"? and then she turns around and it shows the baby strapped to her backside complete with a feather!!! Priceless!!!

As to there only being one microphone that caught both the audience reactions, and the dialogue; I was recently watching a 1983 episode of "Late Night With David Letterman". (Found here on RU-vid) Desi Arnaz was the guest on that particular episode. Desi was talking about the fact that some of the (then) new sit com shows (1980's) were using the same audience laugh track from I Love Lucy. He described how Lucy's mom had a distinctive laugh, which couldn't be mistaken. He went on to say that both the audience mic, and the dialogue mic picked up not only the audience laughs, but also his assistant directors laugh as well. So according to Desi, there were two mics used; one for audience laughs, and another for their dialogue.
@stephenannese8228
@stephenannese8228 4 года назад
This was tv in its infancy,...i'm sure if you watched this in the early 50's while it was first shown you'd probably think it part of Desi's night club (a microphone/a light/etc)...back then viewers probably weren't as knowledgeable as they were in later viewing years,...*my-op.

Rick, I've been watching reruns ( and yes, this episode was always presented here by local Dallas affiliates since the 70s!) & never saw this shadow. I've been noticing a lot on Dick Van Dyke lately TOO. I started watching DvD show roughly ten years as a sleep aide! Don't ask me why but there's something about these childhood-afterschool Ding Dongs & cold milk memories that really comforts me. I see now why you are a professional pilot with keen eyes! Usually they are careful about those kind of things by adding a flag in front of a light to cast a shadow on a wall so the boom can move around. That set looked pretty dynamic with a lot of elements so maybe they couldn't do that.
