This is the kind of thing that kept the show so fresh. By keeping the backstory believable, the contrast makes everything even funnier. The plot line made sense, so the crazy antics would really stand out. This is just one more thing that has made I Love Lucy such an enduring show for 65+ years.

Great catch spotting Fred in the background! I think it was a good idea to redecorate. Just as you mentioned, Ricky's success as the years passed, would naturally show up in the upgrade of their furnishings. You're right about this episode having a "Laurel and Hardy" feel to it. I love it. Thanks, Rick.

The show was very aspirational. They went from a one bedroom apartment decorated originally in a French provincial to American traditional look. To a 2 bedroom in the mid-century style. Out in Hollywood, the hotel suite had a very vibrant, west coast vibe. Then finally in Connecticut, it was the ever popular Early American.

Hi Rick, thank you for profiling my favorite show! Yes, I knew that Lucy was expecting. Back in 1974, my grandmother gave me an old maternity smock that was identical to the one that Lucy is wearing in this episode! Again, thank you!

This episode was on MeTv this morning. I didn’t know the reasons behind the changes, and never realized Lucy was “enceinte” in the episode. It’s a fun one, and I’m glad I have the DVD’s because I hate that they cut the party line scene. It’s really funny in it’s entirety. Also love Hans Conried as the crooked furniture man! 😄

I always felt Lucy didn't realize there was just one income esp. after moving to Connecticut. The huge moving fee moving out. The down payment on the house and the shenanigan's to get out of purchasing the house then the extra $550.00 because of the shenanigan's. The mortgage afterwards, plus property tax. Having to pay a water bill now plus gas and electric. Having a car, automobile insurance, and then paying for gas. Alot of money. But somehow the two made it through all that Phew' The furniture could have waited a bit. Also I didn't like the fact the show began weeding out Little Ricky. I always felt he added an appeal of light to the series & the writers could have done a lot more with his character. BUT IT IS A SITCOM.

I loved the role of the furniture guy. When he bought the old furniture from Lucy he basically said it was junk and gave her $75. When Ricky wanted two buy it back the guy acted like it was priceless goods and charged Ricky $400. The actor who made the furniture deals was hilarious.

Bart Andrews in his 1976 Lucy&Ricky&Fred&Ethel “ The Story of I Love Lucy “ in the episode description section mentions this as well. Lucy commented that one of the reasons for the change was “ I got tired of it” ( the older furniture) Also stated in the pictorial section under a photo from this episode was Lucy was pregnant during the filming of this episode. I purchased that book in 1977 and I still have it. One of my favourite episode. Really enjoyed Hans Conreid’s portrayal of Mr. Jenkins and to me the wallpapering scene had a Three Stooges like feel to it.

A friend of mine once informed me a woman she knew purchased new furniture once a year and just dumped the old though it was still in great condition. This was many years ago. I sometimes see furniture on the garbage trucks when hauling it all away at I always wondered if the stuff is actually broken up and thrown out when the driver gets to the lot etc or if 'they' actually do something with it? But in NY some people actually pick stuff off the street. Awhile back a horrible situation with bed bugs and it was constantly being warned by the city not to pick anything up from the streets...

THE LUCY SHOW had an entire kitchen set change during its 2nd season. The set changed from what looked like a 1940s kitchen to a modern 1960s kitchen all in the same episode. I think the episode's conclusion, showing the new kitchen, was filmed months after the rest of the episode.

When the Ricardo’s moved to their new apartment (the daughter of the people in the other apartment got married and the Ricardo’s switched so they could have more room for Little Ricky), the second bedroom (for Little Ricky) could only be accessed through Lucy and Ricky’s bedroom. It seems strange that the couple who lived there before would have their grown daughter get to her room through her parent’s bedroom.

Another great video topic worth talking about; wouldn't every woman want to re-decorate often especially stay at home ones? Didn't know Lucy was 'specting' then; I noticed how clever Lucy's dresses were waist-widened to appear as regular dresses which works well on front views but not side views of Lucy. When the Ricardos leave for Connecticut, Lucy acts so sad to leave the second apartment as if they lived there all those years, fans of the show would not forget 'they changed apartments'.

I was (and still am) a Lucy Fan, and enjoy these videos. I’m wondering if you plan to do the Lucy Show, plenty of material to be covered there. The first things that come to mind: The bookcase in the living room in season 1 disappeared in the later seasons. The kitchen was remodeled in one of the early color episodes, but an older refrigerator was put back in a later episode as it was part of a gag.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the furniture had to also be custom made. If you look at the scale of both the new and old sofas they are quite small. They need to fit scale-wise into the "apartment" set which compared to the later set where they have the window is a larger room. Sofa's that small are very hard to locate.

I had read a long time ago.......I can't exactly remember where, but I read a few books on Lucille Balls life when I was younger......... Lucy was a perfectionist. And while she was producing ILL, she wanted the show to be as reality based as possible. This means she wore a lot of the same clothes, just as a regular person in Lucy Richardos situation would do.......she would want the same things a home wife would want at that time..........she would want to enter popular contests as other homemaker wifes did at that time.......she wanted better things in her home........etc..... This is why I Love Lucy was so endearing and so funny, and so loved, is that she made it based on reality, but with a bit of silliness that COULD happen to anyone in someone's real life situation!!!

If I may be so bold, the set showed three, not just two, furnished rooms. There is the main room that functions as the living room and dinning room, the bedroom, and the kitchen. Yes, the kitchen is furnished with a table and chair set as well as appliances.

I could understand the scenery needed a brush up especially the apt. being 'supposedly' in Manhattan. Though when researched it is in the Hudson River 😆😆😆 I have lived in many apartments and have always been informed I couldn't have the walls painted in differing colors only white or ivory. One apt. I had moved into the former tenant painted bright green and blue. He was a superhero nut and the bedroom was decorated as Spiderman's cave or something. A Spiderman action figure hanging down from the ceiling. I was told it was all going to be painted over in white. The paint job had started but the bright blue and green colors kept bleeding through the white paint though 3 coats had been painted over. I was then told it wasn't going to be painted over anymore. I became angry and couldn't stand the color bright green in the bathroom. It took about a week, but being an artist I painted a mural of The Little Mermaid on the bathroom wall. This apt. was on Merrick Avenue in Jamaica Queens. When the lease was up I moved to Flushing Queens in the Pomonok area (if any of you are living in Queens, you know the area)... Much better area and environment. After 4 years I was forced to move again as of high rent raise. I didn't move in a great area, & though I am now the apt is a very small studio. Rents are horrendous in New York but I am adjusting to my living quarters in Astoria. Just happy I have a roof over my head, doing the best I can. New York rents are high why so many homeless people: living on the edge. It is difficult. T.G. for Food Pantry's & Soup Kitchens.

I hadn’t heard of the real reason why the set was changed! But I had read that the reason why the Ricardos’ change apartments was due to Lucy being tired of the whole set,,,,so they wrote in that the Ricardos’ then change apartments. To the apartment ‘3D’ . And the same exact reason why they move to the big house in Connecticut, was Lucy got real tired of the same sets. Which is also the reason they go off to Hollywood, and to Europe, was that Lucy got tired of the same sets. And the writers knew they didn’t want to have the Ricardos to move again and again and again, so that was the reason why they went to Hollywood and to Europe. Super interesting!

And also I noticed that in this little video Fred is looking at himself in the mirror on the fireplace and you have that labeled as after but look at the couch it's that old couch when it should be the new couch I'm not sure if I'm seeing that correctly I just wanted to throw that in. But I do like the new Furnishings a lot better. And I think the wallpapering of the bedroom was hilarious especially when Ethel. Wallpapered into the closet. That wallpaper was hideous but that was a good episode.

I wonder what happened to the original set furniture. Any idea how many episodes they did about buying new furniture including Connecticut? Cool video!

They had 4 set changes, the one in the video, after they switch apartments, Lucy buys the sectional couch 2 shows into the new apartment, then they redecorate the Mertzs apartment and they wind up with Lucy's sectional. So Lucy jas to get new furniture. Then they move to the house and redecorate again.

I would love to own something that was on the I Love Lucy set. I don’t care what it is. Also my favorite is actually the 3rd set of furniture they got. When they gave the Mertz their old furniture.

Rick, the 2nd "after shot with Bill Frawley in front of the fireplace says after but the pictures on the back wall are from Before. 😉

They had to write the redecorating episodes because Lucille was pregnant at the time, and the network wanted to give the illusion that Lucy and Ricky were sleeping in separate beds before "Lucy" became pregnant on the show.

That was good detective work. I just assumed it was just another episode. I never heard that there was a reason for this episode. I definitely think the furniture was an improvement. Ha!! That other furniture was pretty bad. 😁

I really do not like that apartment. The new one with the window is do much nicer. This makes not to like the episodes in that first apartment. I also loved the Hollywood episodes. Loved their hotel room.

Great video Rick! This was a very funny episode. I thought it was funny after they switch apartments, like 15 or so shows later, she hates that furniture she just got, when she buys the sectional. That didn't have a long life on her show either in Lucy's apartment anyway.

Yes the change did make a difference in the set. Rick you should do a video on how many livingroom sets the show went through in the 6 year run of the show.

You mentioned this episode reminded you of Laurel and Hardy wallpapering. There were also a couple of times the Three Stooges did a wallpaper job.

Hey Rick could you do an episode comparing all the apartments / dwellings that the Ricardos lived in over the full series?

So clever! I didn't know she was pregnant at that time. But it was a funny episode nonetheless! Question: I registered for the give-a-way a while back. Is it still good? Or do I need to do it again?

I like all your video s but More on Emergency would be really nice. Emergency will always be my favorite show. I was only 2 years old when Emergency had the first episode. Possible the whole first season.

TV sets were descended from movie sets, they weren’t very durable. When George Burns came back from hiatus from the first “Burns and Allen” shows, he noticed the sets weren’t in good shape. He had the next sets built to last longer and save money.
