Now we just need a mod where you can permanently attach an ED64 to boot when there's no cartridge, and real carts override. So no cart boots ED64, and a real cart inserted boots straight in to that instead.
Wouldn't be too difficult, if you don't care about access to the sd card. The cartridge contents are quite small and can be easily fixed inside the N64. You would need to make some kind of spring connectors and solder the pins to them, and have it separate when a cartridge gets put in, separating the connection to the ed64 and letting the normal pins attach.. I might do it. Sounds like a lot of wires and soldering, but maybe I'll think of something easier
@@MelodicTurtleMetal I'll have to check it out myself. Let me know if you come up with an idea! If it's possible to make a DIY Sega Neptune, this should be possible as well lol
@@tyisafk Seems like a lot of work for marginal improvements. Something better would be a wireless on/off and reset so he can easily save his game and jump into another game would be cooler. I've seen someone do this mod on their N64 and it looked nice without any power button or reset on the top. You could even go as far as installing that remote on your primary controller, though I would put it somewhere you won't accidentally push them while you're playing.
You can get 8 Megabyte SRAM chips now, so hypothetically you could give an N64 (the model with two RDRAM chips on the motherboard) a whopping 16 megabytes of Static RAM, which should have lower access latencies than the RDRAM you would be replacing, and thus result in better performance. However, you'd probably need to modify the memory controller inside the Reality Co-Processor in order to bypass the RDRAM functions so that you could actually use the Static RAM.
Would have loved to see you mod the reset button onto your controller. That would have literally blown my mind. You're like a mad scientist bro. I'd love to see what wild projects you came up with during lockdown.
I've heard of an overclocking mod that you can install with relative ease, would be a cool counterpart to the custom fan as the stock n64 never gets very hot otherwise.
never gets too hot with normal use. When I was a kid, I never had a memory pack (most games save on cart, so no biggie). Well, Tony Hawk didnt save on cart and I wanted to beat it. Played it after school, got halfway, left it paused for later. Came home and the picture was all wavy and discolored. System was pretty hot. Grabbed a small fan and pointed it at the n64 and it got better.
The battery in the new versions isnt for gamesaves. Its for the real time clock and also to prevent you from losing your data when you turn off the console. Thats why in the 2.4 version you need to hold the reset button, but the 3.0 and x7 you dont. Im sure the cartridge has SRAM but its only temporary during the play session. The crazy "hotswap" only applies to original cartridges and memory cards.
Awesome mods dude, all good stuff. Fan is cool too. My Ultra is on it's way in a couple days. Went with the transparent blue with the game cart and retro fighters controller. Already have two gold tridents with my gold console. Might do the black touch ups on the controller ports and legs.
that is wicked and overkill. love the backlight might have to do that to mine and the extra heat sinks are cool. another method is to backup the saves with n64 to usb adapter v3 that way you can use nykos hyperpak as well. also you can hold start on boot to manage memory pak dont need a game
"some kind of racing game". That's world driver championship. Loved it as a kid. They're pretty rare these days and the last time I tried in a 64 emulator wouldn't even work lol , I think it's the one game that doesn't work in emulator for some reason. I still own the cart though :)
Doubt you'd see this message, but if by some crazy chance you do would you be able to show the controller Z button mod with maybe a flash light? I'd love to attempt this myself for my controller, but I'm a bit nervous. Was kinda just wanting to see your setup on that once more before going at it.
dude I love your N64 console just blacking out the controller/cassette ports gave it a more modernized look, did you paint them, ? what did you used the black em out ?
Just the best yt video, I've already watched 10 times and never gets old, just a quick note here, I use a controller pack editor ROM in my ed64. Not sure the name, but I found the link in a yt video. Could you do a video showing the editor on this cartridge? The one I use is very simple, but gets the job done. I'd love to see it.
Now you need to put an Blueretro mod so you can use any bluetooth controller. I use a N64 NSO and you con switch withing rumble and a virtual memory pak with only push a botton.
Great video! Keep up thee good work. You should do a mod in the controllers to switch the up and down of the analogue stick for games like Turok that dont give you the option. I have just done one!
I actually think this is genius I especially like the homemade fan, and reset device. I think this might also be very long lasting with the modifications you made to the batteries inside the games. Half of me wishes that I could do this with mine, but to do that I definitely need to learn sautering, and I probably should get a pc.
If you are going to make another one, you can add Bluetooth controls for the power and reset button(If you want). There is also an option to add one more switch for a overclock also hidden next to the other switches (with the fan you should be able to oc it without overheating)
It's not so much as dumb as of how crazy you have to be to put this time into this product although I am curious how much does the entire package cost as a whole and I'm just as crazy as you if I had the skills to do something like this I would absolutely
I'd probably use an nvSRAM and a supercapacitor in the EverDrive and Controller Paks, since it would self-recharge, and once the data is saved it can completely turn off, lasting indefinitely (as opposed to just 10 years as in FRAM). I'd probably also hack the EverDrive 3.0 firmware so that it would have a save editor as well. And for that reset box, I'd probably use paracord with it and add some super grippy feet.
You hold the start button to access the mempry manager which is i. Many games, perfect dark has a good one You can do this via the everdrive right after you load a rom
I got a Japanese one before the quarantine and modded it with a universal cartridge adapter piece inside and got a Rad2X before they became difficult to find. I bought a Brawler 64 controller and Resident Evil 2 and Star Fox 64. I think I will get the China Everdrive clone from Ali-Express. I can't see playing anything else but if I want to I would like the option.
Stupid question (I'm a newb with this stuff) can the everdrive 64 be used with any modded N64? (A rgb one specifically) also what exactly does that cartridge do? Thank you
Not a criticism, just a note: MLCC capacitors aren't strictly "better" per se, and in some cases, they may not be sufficient for the system's needs - some of the Game Gear/Nomad modders have found this out. Their main advantage is that they won't fail like traditional electrolytics by drying out or popping, spraying your important vintage electronics with that juicy acidic sweetness. Also, as CNLohr found out, cheap capacitors (tantalum in his case) can be a little... spicy. Explosively so.
Dude this is awesome! How exactly did you dye/paint the controller ports without messing up the pins? I'm interested in doing this but I don't want to accidentally ruin the pins or anything.
I'm pretty sure when you take open up the system you can take the plastic around the controller ports without the electronics and dye that, but don't quote me.
So there are mods to overclock the jumper pack and even the cpu. There will be graphic timing glitches but otherwise interesting. I was reviewing old threads.
You obviously have no clue what your talking about. The brawler64 is only 30 bucks just 20 more than the new joystick for an oem. The brawler64 joysticks is a dream, a near match to the original. The china crap $10 joysticks dont even come close to emulating the original controller. Huge deadspot in the center and highly oversensitive. Pure garbage. Most if not all games are unplayable with those joysticks. But dont take my advice try a brawler for yourself its amazing!
@@Blair88mph I'm talking about buying replacement gears, a replacement bowl, and a replacement stick from kitsch bent or steelsticks and rebuilding the original stick, restoring it to near factory condition. In my eyes this option is vastly superior to the brawler or anything else, but to each their own. You should order the parts and make a video about it.
@@Blair88mph the brawler 64 is ten degrees on average more sensitive then the original. It changes the feel of a lot of games because they were all designed for the n64 controllers sensitivity. It's also a strange thing where in some games you'll feel no difference or alot of difference, this goes for every console that has used analog sticks. I'd try to play a game with a regular n64 controller that's in good condition for an hour. Then switch to the brawler 64 you'll probably feel a difference that way.
@@BonswallyI will 100% agree that a right out of the box brand new oem controller is the best controller for the n64. If nintendo would make an official replacement joystick that would solve it. The china replacements available are all bad. I looked into replacing the warn joystick internal parts but the company doing this had everything out of stock and the prices were rediculus. If you can hook me up with a better option I would be totally open to it. Long story short oem is dead to me. They are all warn to hell and im not buying a mint in package and opening it up. So for $30 the brawler64 is a good option.
@@Blair88mph The gears, bowl, and stick will run you about $10 on kitsch bent, but yes it can be hard to get them before they sell out. I recall I ordered my bowls from Kitsch bent and got the gears and stick on ebay. Replacing just the gears and stick generally solves 90% of the problem. A worldwide search on ebay for "n64 gears" and "n64 stick" should do the trick.
@@abnormaldonadoful I could do a vdeo of it in action however there are a couple ultrahdmi videos on youtube and it would just be identical to that, then you have youtubes on the evergen cart also so again just a repeat. It might be rare to see them together I guess. If I have time I might see if I can make that happen.
It depends. Most hacks were made and tested on emulators not the original system. What doesnt cause an error on an emulator might on the actual system. Would be really hard to give a good answer without trying it.
He mentions at some point in the video that it had been like a year before recording that he did the mods, so I'm pretty sure he did them himself, but had forgotten a few specifics over time.
@@dreamsmpfunnymoments3619 I have seen many the new pxielvault hdmi kit and every is like just leave the console on only for 30 secs to test of the mod worked since the heat shield has been removed.
I didn't know the trick for the Memory Manager. Is there a page with a list of games that include the memory manager? My Google skills came up with nothing...
micro-64.com/database/gamesave.shtml The n64 has 5 different types of save types. Only games that use the controller pak will have the memory menu. I cant guarantee all the pak save games have them but I think almost all do. On that site is a list of games that use the controller pak. Should steer you in the right direction. The are also not all the same. Some have crap menus where you can only edit the game game filea and not all files on the pak. The one I chose in the video is the best out of the 4 I tried and stuck with that.
@@Blair88mph Have you tried loading that game's rom from the Everdrive 64 while pressing START? I asked in the forum and they say it works from there. As an alternative there is also a homebrew called "Controller-Pak-Manager" from manfriedn64 on github.
