The reason so many young men were of such poor health at the start of World War 2 was because of the depression. They had less than adequate food and medical treatment growing up. My father was one of those men, and wasn't allowed to enlist. So, he joined the Merchant Marines and spent the war on cargo ships and tankers in the Pacific Theater of operations. He was not entitled any of the benefits of the G.I.Bill after the war. He could have sat out the war in the U.S., but like many others chose to serve his country in the Merchant Marines.

An interesting highlight, another fascinating topic is the changing age of individuals during times of war throughout history. From the old "between 15 and 50" saying, to underage soldiers lying in order to join wwi/ii, my grandpa joining the navy at 15 to fight in the pacific. I personally knew a fellow soldier who was my bunkmate in basic/AIT of the US army in 2007- he was over 40 (I believe 42, but he could have been 45) and he was incredibly fit, slightly taller than me at 6'5", yet he could plant his hands flat on the ground doing a straight legged hamstring stretch and could run ~13 min two mile, surpassing all PT standards, and despite being adjusted for his age, his raw PT numbers excelled other privates most half his age. Proving he more than belonged amongst our ranks.

The problem with basing being overweight with BMI is that high muscle mass will also increase your BMI. Seeing as many military personnel tend to be extremely active and more muscular than the average person you can see why that 20% number is likely over exaggerated. Anything other than body fat measurements shouldn't be taken seriously for measuring obesity.
@james-md1cf
@james-md1cf 10 месяцев назад
The heart doesn’t care about fat or muscle, People with an extreme amount of muscle tend to be slower as the heart has to deliver oxygen to more muscle and often times professional bodybuilders get heart attacks due to their unhealthy lifestyle. Thus both obese and muscular are considered liabilities on the battlefield. The ideal soldier is lean yet has the necessary muscle but also necessary fat reserves with a body-fat between 10%-15%.
@pipsapossu1699
@pipsapossu1699 10 месяцев назад
@@james-md1cfbut the ideal soldier cant bench press 140kilo. Also while true that being bigger makes your heart work harder. I would argue that anabolics play a much bigger role on the cardiovascular health of pro bodybuilders rather than size alone.
@geno296
@geno296 10 месяцев назад
@@james-md1cf just blatantly not true unless you have a source to back your claim. With no steroid use high muscle mass will not cause any heart issues. The increase in weight may cause joint problems over time but your body definitely has a difference with fat being stored inside the body where it shouldn’t be stored and having larger muscles. Also with a normal amount of cardio as long as you train you shouldn’t have any issues with the circulation of oxygen to supply your muscles. If you only focus on lifting however you may see decreased endurance.
@james-md1cf
@james-md1cf 10 месяцев назад
@@geno296 Source: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9781327/ In the abstract of the paper: “chamber dilation was present in 33% of the bodybuilders, and the prevalence of atherosclerosis was 80% in the five autopsies where it was reported. The coroners’ reported causes of death for the bodybuilders included heart disease, steroid-induced cardiomyopathy, sudden cardiac dysrhythmia, and left ventricular hypertrophy.” Pupmeds research suggests that symptoms of cardiovascular myopathy (muscular mytosis) were prevelant on 80% of the autopsies conducted on dead bodybuilders. (Symptoms: heart disease, steroid-induced cardiomyopathy, sudden cardiac dysrhythmia, and left ventricular hypertrophy.) Here are a few more references for you to indulge in: www.thebarbell.com/do-pro-bodybuilders-die-younger-than-average/#:~:text=Heart%20disease%20is%20the%20leading,bodybuilder%20deaths%20have%20been%20cardiovascular. link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40279-022-01801-0 Its common sense now that increased muscular hypertrophy especially from myostatim deficiencies causes tears in tendons and ligaments alongside damages in the ventricular system. We see this reach headlines in the bodybuilding community and even powerlifting community. So no evidence does not support what you are stating Also do you have a refutable source? I got my data from Pupmed.gov and Springer publications.
@james-md1cf
@james-md1cf 10 месяцев назад
@@pipsapossu1699 It seems reasonable to conclude that but it is not entirely accurate: studies consistently demonstrate that muscular hypertrophy and ventricle hypertrophy even from myostatin deficiencies contribute to cardiovascular attacks in the autopsies of Natural bodybuilders. Naturals are just as susceptible. Its just that steroids bypass the evolutionary mechanism to keep the muscles from bypassing a certain size. Regardless a bodybuilder of such a caliper would not be ideal for combat

I expected there to be more obese soldiers from the USSR, and one to make the list, but then I realized that the soldiers did not need to do exercises like carrying heavy equipment and marching, they were already poor farmers who struggled to keep food on their tables. An obese soldier would not make it to the red army since they would most likely be from a wealthy family and avoid conscription because of corruption.

There was a short soldier in WW1. They uncovered his remains a few years ago. They belive he drowned in a shell crater. David B. Bleak was 6'5" 250 lbs and won the Medal of Honor in Korea. He was a medic that killed 4 with his bare hands.

I joined the USAF in 1972, and was granted a waiver for weight. I was 6" 0 1/4", but weighed 207 pounds with about 5.0% bodyfat. I came out of college wrestling. I was 20 pounds over the limit but fitter than anyone in the two flights that I did P.T. with. Many of the recruiters and drill instructors said that I looked like a marine. They wanted me so badly because I set the all-time record for high written test score in my recruitment area that included parts of four States. They told me that I could have any enlisted job that I wanted as long as it was advanced avionics....lol They wanted me so badly that they waived the stupid weight requirement for my height. By the end of my enlistment, I weight a very lean 235 pounds. That was fifty pounds over the maximum for my height. The maximum weight allowed was 186 for a six footer. I was stationed in the northeast where there was snow 8 months of the year, so for recreation, we would play 3 hours of racket-ball every weekday after working midnights I was benching over 400 pounds and did the annual 1.5 mile run in under 8 Minutes 30 seconds. I was on the fat boy program for one day each year. - The retired redneck accountant

Being short is a huge advantage in combat. It's easier to hide yourself and you're a harder target to hit. Since everybody uses firearms: there's no need to throw a punch, anyway.

I've known a few people who were overweight that joined the military just so they had that structure to lose weight and get into shape. Back at home they didn't have the proper structure for themselves to lose it. One of my friends went in weighing almost 260-270 and throughout basic he lost a good amount of it and weighed around 180. Said joining the military was one of the best decisions he ever made and that it saved his life. After his service was over he didn't lose the mind set which helped him keep his weight in check and saved him from having heart failure, diabetes and all the other health problems that can come with being overweight. A couple of my friends also joined the military because like me they had a hard time putting on and keeping on weight. They wanted that structure that would help them do such.
