My first bike was a Ninja 250. I rode it almost everyday for 2 years before I sold it and bought an R6. The Yamaha is fun, but I honestly wish I still had the Ninja because it was honestly the perfect commuter bike due to it’s weight, comfort, reliability, and rideability . I put it through absolute hell, but I still ended up selling it for a lot more than I bought it for.

Don't knock the ninja 250's till you've owned one. Since theres very little hp you have to become a good rider by necessity just to keep up with 500's and 650's in the twisties

I started on a Rebel 250. Guys who start on bigger bikes will make fun of you, but if you put in the seat time, you'll probably out ride a lot of them when you upgrade, possibly before. If you're just wanting to floss, go ahead and get whatever you want, but I'm not going to be as impressed as you might think by how much you spent or how fast your bike is if you can't ride worth a shit. You can draw a crowd of spectators on a little 250 practicing in a parking lot if you ride the shit out of it, and those skills translate quite naturally to bigger bikes. I gave up cruisers because I hate scrubbing pegs on pavement, but starting an a small cruiser was a great decision, and I have no regrets.

@michaellovell2518
@michaellovell2518 5 лет назад
@@notsteve1475 LOL, yeah, I get it. I'm 5'7" and around a buck and a half. The Rebel is too cramped even for me for more than an hour or so. I can totally understand why big guys wouldn't ride one, even to start on, but a 6' 200 lb. guy is going to find it easier to handle a bigger bike than us midgets. We have seat height issues that loom more heavily on our decisions, and bigger often equates to stronger, so the weight of a starter bike could be less of an issue for a bigger guy as well. I was really intimidated by big bikes at first, but after riding the 250 for a while, I put my fears aside and attended a HD demo event. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the weight was not an issue. HDs are low and I found them very easy to manage, but I was tired of grinding the pegs off cruisers. I rode to Daytona in October and started sitting on bikes. I really liked the FJR1300, but it felt really tall and top heavy to me. I didn't have any trouble riding it, but I had to hang off one side to firmly plant one foot. I was torn, but I wanted a little more than the Rebel had to offer, so I pulled the trigger when Kawi offered huge incentives on left over Ninja 650s. I rode it for a year, then revisited the FJR, and it feels completely different now. With the seat in the lower position, I feel really comfortable on it now.
@michaellovell2518
@michaellovell2518 5 лет назад
When I talk about "bigger bikes" in this context, It should certainly be understood to be a relative term. I think it's important to be able to flatfoot your first bike, and the bigger you are, the bigger bike you can flatfoot. I think lighter is probably better for anybody to learn on, but it's less important than being able to plant both feet firmly starting out. I don't think really powerful bikes are a good idea for beginners, but I also understand that a 300 lb. guy on a 250 would be like me riding a 5hp minibike. The size of the rider is definitely a relevant variable!

I love my ninja 250, was a great beginner bike and ill probably continue using it for the rest of this year or summer at the earliest. I agree with the rpm thing though, highways im sitting at 8-9k rpms. So it is running high, but you also gotta realize that bike can go up to 13k before hitting redline, they are designed based off running high rpms so it will be fine for awhile going those speeds, Id like to upgrade in the future when money isnt an issue but I dont plan on going past a 600cc. I just ride for fun, no track days so I dont want anything faster then that!

Any recommendations for an old fart getting back into the game after around a 15-year hiatus. Started riding at around 10 and had my motorcycle permit at 15; before I got my car permit. Rode until the ripe old age of around 30. Life took me out of the game for 15 years or so, but I’m at a point where I can get back into it. That said, I’ve been out of it so long l, I don’t know where to begin. Was always a crotch rocket guy, but these days I think I’d like a hybrid. These bikes look pretty good (well, other than the Rebel), but I’m wondering if I’d outgrow them too fast.

Well after almost 30 countries and regions (Europe, Alps, Central Asia, Scandinavia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Russia etc.) with my NC750X I have to say it’s a great adventure bike. Certainly as good as the V-Strom if not better :) the older stroms are fine but the new once tend to brake under pressure and heavy luggage (especially the frame).

Glad you have made good use of your NC750X, you've been to some varied countries with it, sounds fun. I had a look at the NC750 naked platform as a commuter bike for a daily 90 mile round trip. Decided to stick with the bikes I currently have but should I change in future I'd happily hop on a NC. I loved that there are lots of places for putting you gear into the bike away from prying eyes. If you use it for intended purposes - city and short twisties, I guess that vibrations are not such big deal but even maybe add to hooligan feeling. I think that bigger issue should be that it runs on lean mixture so you have occasionall stalling and cut-off but there are available controllers for fix.

You'd probably be all good with the Kawasaki Vulcan S, with the reduced reach bars/pegs/seat. I'm 5'4" and can flat foot it with ease, and I found it more capable for longer rides.

I want a motorcycle. I’m basically brand new. I see you recommending all these 650cc bikes and it just seems to scare me as I am new. Would you really say that a 600-650 is okay for a pure newb?

@Imran-lq6qu 4 года назад
Matthew Short if you don’t feel comfortable there’s nothing wrong with getting a lower cc bike being a pure newb you wanna be able to feel the bike out properly and be able to take corners with confidence. I say you get a lower cc bike and feel more comfortable. Nothing wrong with it😊

I've been riding an 08 ninja 250r that i found with 1.5k miles for $2.4k. I'm a short light weight dude (5'6" 135 lbs.) for about a couple of months in accumulated riding/ practice time. Obviously its definitely a fun bike for me. I have used my friends R6 and that thing is insane compared to mine but i like mine more. It is bias but i will say that its a more comfortable riding position and i feel that the r6 is too much to be on the streets (perfect for the freeways though). I will say that i've never been an adrenaline junkie and that i wanted to ride a motorcycle for sheer convenience of getting through traffic and having a backup vehicle. Power like that can get you in some unnecessary trouble but specially as a beginner with nerves and all and not having the throttle control or downshifting down. The 250 does leave me desiring for a bit more on the freeways but it gets the job done albeit like yam said at high rpms. It's not a problem for me since I dont ride that long on the freeway anyway though . Max 10 minutes to my destination. Still though I definitely believe everyone should own a small displacement bike they are just too much fun unless power and flexing your nuts is all you care about. Im only talking about sport bikes as those are the only ones i have ridden. This is not to say higher displacement bikes are a no go but as a sheer noob stand point you cant go wrong and you will want to keep your small cc bike if you can. Have i gotten the feeling of wanting more power? Yes. Would i trade my 250r for another higher power bike? No, i would like to have both lol.

I have a rebel 500 and I'm only 5'9" and I feel uncomfortable riding it. My ass sits on the edge of the seat because I think the bike really is for smaller people. It's a great bike, but for someone as tall as me, and is approaching 200 pounds you might want to steer clear and get something bigger.

I am a owner of the Yamaha R3. The bike is perfect for all around commuting, tackling the twisties or long adventures. I've taken it 300+ miles on a single day and it shows no sign of failure. On the twisties of ACH (Highway 2) in CA , I've kept up with 600cc sport bikes because of the R3s nimble weight. And I use it simply to get to work because it does also get good gas mileage with a decent sized tank (3.7 gal). Although, I have gotten bored of its top speed (113 Mph), I don't plan on getting rid of it simply because it is super fun on the twisties. I believe that the R3 is great starter bike for these reasons.
