Calcaneus fractures are uncommon but potentially debilitating injuries. The #calcaneus bone is one of (7) tarsal bones, part of the hindfoot which includes the calcaneus and talus bone. The hindfoot articulates with the tibia and fibula creating the ankle joint. The subtalar or calcaneotalar joint accounts for at least some foot and ankle dorsal/plantar flexion. Historically a burst fracture of the calcaneus was coined a "Lovers Fracture" as the injury would occur as a suitor would jump off a lover's balcony to avoid detection
.
Heel Fracture Facts
- Calcaneal fractures account for 50-60% of all fractured tarsal bones.
- less than 10% present as open #fractures
- there is a male predominance of injuries (recent studies suggest regional variation in male/female predominance)
- Most #calcaneusfracture patients are young (20-39 yrs)
- Comorbidities (diabetes, osteoporosis) can increase risk
- Calcaneal fractures are rare in children
.
Surgical #HeelFracture Tx: When recommended, the goal is to restore calcaneal morphology + restore articular congruency. Surgical treatment may be delayed until "wrinkle sign," returns (usually 5-10 dys after injury). Soft tissue swelling may take up to 21 dys to resolve. Surgical intervention is typically recommended for:
- Displaced tongue-type Fractures
- Joint depression w/ articular comminution or anterior process involvement
- Bohler's angle less than 5 degrees
- Fracture Dislocation
- Anterior process fractures with greater than 25% of the calcaneocuboid articulation involved
- Calcaneal body fractures w/ significant varus or valgus malalignment or lateral impingement/loss of calcaneal height, or significant translation of posterior tuberosity

What is the material that is injected in between, in the cracks? I know it’s obviously going to help the bone heal but why, since it is getting in between where the bone will eventually grow back together?

@@BoneDoctor_RU-vid if I don't walk too much I am fine but if I go walking around then I have to take a day or two to recover from the pain . I don't want to be taking pain medication all the time.

Broke both my tibia and fibula and shattered my heel. Plated and casted for weeks. Luckily, it wasn't an external fixation. Doctors kept asking me how high I jumped from. I did it running and falling over my dog, lol

@@user-dh6bj2me5pCan't use Penacillin or Amoxicillin antibiotics they don't work. Mycins work alone and in combination. Need a doctor that does NOT guess what to use and runs extra time until blood is in green zones, per test. Do homework on line. More tech needed for heel replacement with metal or otherwise.
