Smoky Mountain National Park is the most visited national park in the United States and for good reason. The area is loaded with various plant and animal species and over 800 miles of hiking trails so people can get out and enjoy what the Smokies have to offer. While the Appalachian Trail runs through the center of the park, there may be another trail even more popular with visitors.
The Alum Cave Trail which leads to Alum Cave Bluffs and Mt. LeConte may be the most popular trail for day hikers and we agree that it’s a trail that shouldn’t be missed if visiting the Smokies. The trail starts from Newfound Gap Road and winds its way along Alum Creek before ascending through the amazing geological feature of Arch Rock. Soon after, the trail begins to climb as it approaches Alum Cave Bluffs. This is a well-known stopping point to take in the view, take pictures, and have a snack before venturing on to the summit of Mt. Leconte. The trail is 2.3 miles to Alum Cave and 5 miles to the Mt. Leconte.
