i detest how Ewe-Chewb block some great content creators for the most ridiculous draconian/dictatorial reasons. They behave like Big-Bro but worse. Trouble is Gov and big business have allegedly had content blocked for nefarious reasons. keep up your excellent work/help Miss NB. It comes from the heart.
I feel this video shows perfectly why there is no serious alternative to RU-vid itself. The third party clients are vulnerable to changes (or lawsuits) and completely independent platforms lack creators and will never ever be financially viable if they by some miracle would reach RU-vids scale.
Newpipe is a serious alternative for people like me and you, and almost everyone. I don't want to pay the censoring Alphabet company $10/month to background a video and avoid two advertisements per video. They are already billionaires, and they've used their monopoly to censor people like doctors on their platform.
@@-whackd One problem you haven't mentioned is how GooglePlayStore adds a UUID, unique user ID to downloaded applications. That ID then gets associated with your phone and is used for tracking. This happened with VPNs and Tor, it can be adapted for traffic staining too. There is a directory of who has which App and companies pay to find out more about user IDs. Law Enforcement love the feature as they can track people with VPNs and third party email and DNS etc.
@@Bond2025on iOS all you have to do is uninstall the app and reinstall and the uuid is regenerated. It used to be static, ie app developers used to have physical access to the device UUID, but since it was abused it was removed and replaced with a random uuid per app per installation. I know that's only 1 piece of the puzzle in what you explained but it's def good info to know
I think you are underestimating the near monopoly power that a platform like RU-vid has. Google play store could simply deny your app like it did with that one Trump app & make up a bunch of bullshit & you're in serious trouble. RU-vid creates a far bigger barrier to entry than naturally exists by itself.
People and their phones/app addictions-it's out of control and getting worse. Data aggregators/brokers are lovin it! I was at a coffee shop the yesterday and this person in front of me was watching YT. When it was his turn at the counter, his eyes didn't move from his screen as he was making his order and paying. Same scenario when checking into a hotel recently. People are all over the roads obviously watching their phones rather than the road. It's insane! If one cannot go out and interact with society (without being glued to the screen) just stay home! My Wed rant...Thank you Naomi; great content as usual.
finally found your channel again. man, these algorithms are nuts. i lost u for almost 6 months. more power to u ✊🏼✊🏿✊🏻✊🏾✊🏽✊️ thx 4 educamating the general public! so very much appreciated ❤
The problem with VPNs is pricing. Mullvad and ProtonVPN are way more expensive than Nord for example, or PIA, so guess where people go to and risk their privacy. I used a VPN for 8 years and was only ever blocked from a few sites, but I used it for privacy. A lot of people think they are to mask illegal activities and others think it stops tracking and your ISP seeing what you do, when it doesn't. Many DNS servers also sell your data, allow sites to track you and sell details to other companies and redirect you to the highest bidder. Nothing is that safe now. Maybe we need a "SAFE ISP" that doesn't track, profile and sell user data.
If it is anything about privacy tips, I always go to you, Naomi. The amount of free wealth of information you provide for us is just mesmerizing and I really love you for that. Thank you so much! We will continue to always support you.
More choices equals greater freedom ..............thank you for increasing our freedom, Ms. Brockwell. Freedom of speech and expression should not be in the control of the few ...........if we want to remain free.
Well i wish the app knew i wanted to watch every Naomi post, instead of only notifying me every 4th post. 😂 Great information as always Naomi. I do wish LBRY was further along.
I mainly watch RU-vid videos on my laptop through Firefox with an ad blocking extension. Even then, RU-vid's algorithm is tracking what I watch, in order to recommend me videos. As far as Google itself tracking the RU-vid videos I watch, there's no way around this, unless I use an app like NewPipe or LibreTube, but even those apps can track what I watch and are probably collecting data on its users. We can't see what's going on behind the scenes. In addition, NewPipe and LibreTube aren't available through the Google Play Store, so in order to download these apps from their respective websites, you have to enable your phone to allow unknown apps to be installed from your web browser, which poses a security risk.
Always great insights on new ways to protect our privacy… though transition and change is difficult - especially when one is already integrated into the collective of borgs.
There is 1 domain where RU-vid sucks and that's music. It's horrible for recommendations. It literally repeats the same songs over and over and then randomly songs that don't even sound any good. Google literally has all the songs I uploaded when Google play music was beta and they still get it all wrong.
We keep wondering why so many creators and users remain with the legacy / Big Tech platforms. Yes, it's lucrative - but also very limiting so to avoid censorship via their algorithms. We have only one account on such platforms, RU-vid, and seeing how LBRY and Odysee works will see us more often there than on YT. Legacy and Big Tech platforms are literally honey-coated very bitter pills that is slowly losing both their creators as well as users. Those that have either been forced out or have elected to go elsewhere did have a bumpy ride - however we have yet to see anyone regret the move once they regain their bearings, which means fear of censorship is still limiting freedom. Thank you so very much Naomi for your excellent content as well as your heart and soul in all this. We have to be sure to financially assist somehow as well!
I use Firefox with an ad blocker on my CalyxOS phone to go to RU-vid. And I turn off location permission. I do log into a google account for it, to keep up with my subscriptions, but that's all I use the login for. So their collected data doesn't have much context.
Miss Brockwell, thank you for this very informative video. I tried looking for New Pipe and Libre Tube on the App store but they're not available. I only found Odysee. Do we get them via browser or on desktop /laptop?
I have a few doubts about piped instances for libretube & lbry. Namely, what data & metadata do they have access to? How much ownership does a user have over their data & identity? Can one request deletion of their data? How do they combat bad instances/blocks that may be set up by governments or hackers to not just track but may be even infect users?. Especially with libretube, you have to trust an instance. How do you go about evaluvating instances?
@@RestWithinS-O-L. None of these apps appears to be available for compiling on Linux either, only Android, which Google appears to be in the process of locking down. Early days though, so maybe NewPipe and others will eventually become available for running under an OS that isn’t also owned by YT’s corporate dominion.
VPNs are not safe to use, they might not log all data, but the hosting company can and does and they sell it. Which VPN do you recommend? I used WeVPN before finding it was a honeypot run by UK Police/NCA, before that I used PIA which is KAPE, and they are known for data mining. KAPE owns others too. So which vpn?
Free VPN services might log your data, but a reputable VPN service won't log your data. I recommend going with one of the top paid VPN service like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, or Mozilla VPN. These companies have explicit no-logging policies on their websites and apps. If they were to break their policies, they could, and probably would be sued for false advertising.
French gov can now legally with warrant access to french microphone and camera. This was the only thing missing to increase « personal safety ». When people trade freedom for safety, they will lose both.
You mentioned RU-vid collecting data using a cell phone, is it the same for using a tablet on Wi-Fi? Or a laptop on Wi-Fi? What about watching RU-vid on your tv..
unless you are just out of university, most do not have a traditional computer and watch almost everything on their mobile... unless they may have HDTV but that is for streaming..
what do you think of kick as a alternative to twitch? it's not going to be open source but it's becoming popular. and i am going to start using LBRY. also i have a bunch of old hard drives what do i do with old phones or laptops or hard drives?
I'd also like to point out that the DMCA takedowns still occur over there. A channel I really like who criticizes YT has his channel here but was banned from Odysee. It's really put me off. I didn't think censorship got worse than YT and yet...
@@NaomiBrockwellTV There is a new one that has launch this year. it's called /e from e foundation. Have you heard about it ? If yes what is your opinion on it ?
You forgot Musi, that I use to listen to YT podcasts, because you can switch off the screen and put the phone in your pocket, that you can’t do with YT app
Honestly, being private within todays digital dominant by big corporations like Google would cost you a lot of money to only keep trying. Actually a lot of money for a losing war.
Naomi- If you see this, and if you don't mind answering (totally understand if you do) - RU-vid currently shows 211k subscribers for your channel- are you able to provide a rough estimate of $/year/user you receive from RU-vid for this channel? (Just doing some rough speculating on what might be a reasonable amount to "put in the cup" so to speak, were your channel to be treated like a street performer presentation).
Naomi - what if I simply turn RU-vid history off? If I can live with the aggravation that causes, are they still tracking me and collecting my information and if so, to what extent?
I use the youtube web-app on brave while using my phone, isn't that secure enough? I also have proton vpn installed on my router and running all the time
Was 100% sure she was going to talk about LBRY. Steemit ...DTube ....VTube ...etc a bad track record with decentralized video streaming. But I still have hope.
But the whole premise of wasting time on you tube is that it knows my preferences and recommends videos and channels accordingly. the options recommended seem apt for a single clandestine video i need to watch, but if i want to be kept updated on the latest videos by a channel like Naomi Brockwell, youtube is what i should be using. Isn't It?
Question: Are "Data Removal" Services any useful at all and worth spending money at? :P If so, any you would recommend? I just feel suspicious towards them. Like a "Spiritual guide" that can see your future type of deal.
Will you please recommend a VPN, mine will drop internet after a random amount of time. Haven’t been able to find a solution with the company, affects both mobile and desktop. Utube led me to your channel 😂 I’ll call that positive snooping.
@@NaomiBrockwellTV Probably the best two about, although Proton does assist Law Enforcement and changed the terms and conditions to show this. They claimed not to at first, but have admitted it, so people are clear. A VPN is for privacy, not for doing illegal things on, so if you do that they WILL hand over your information. The Law is slightly different for their email service, that is far more difficult to get providing it has never left their system. If it has, it has gone in plain text to other ISPs, so police will go to the recipient ISP. Mullvad has a long trusted history and I would go for them, but you need to be cautious about how you get the account so that you can not be traced. If you look at some VPNs, they want your credit card. I think Nord is still banned from PayPal because of complaints. If a VPN wants your credit card or full name and address or phone number, it is to build a verified profile - and they sell for more. ALL VPNs log data to an extent, some cheaper ones are just proxy servers. Most of the big VPNs will profile and sell your data and charge to redirect you to sites. Most VPNs are owned by a few companies. Some were honeypots operated as an experiment by police in the UK. If you ever used WeVPN, just hope you did nothing naughty! They were silly enough to operate a server from their own datacenter and one operated in a police station in the North West UK. Some VPNs also repurpose idle connections, so you might find data coming from other users down to your phone or computer and back out through your own IP to assist with unlocking streaming and geo-located services. WeVPN did that to unlock BBCi for example, I often found I was going through random residential IPs! Use a VPN with caution. If it is registered in a country with no Data Protection Laws, you have no say in what happens to that data compared to the control over ISPs.
Odysee collects data including contact list, contact info, user content , and identifiers all linked to our identity. Per iOS. This may have changed since you made this video.
Wow! I actually learned something today. And that’s not to imply you aren’t informative it’s just I’m generally informed on privacy. Can anybody suggest a good app that works on google tv? I actually got the legacy version of skytube to work on Google tv. I have to use a mouse but of course nothing worth doing is seamless! Privacy above all! I look forward to not being able to comment here lol😂 Thank you Naomi.
But really, aren’t we just trading whom is collecting our data? What is stopping alternative services from collecting it? Like VPNs, we use them to protect but now they know :-). If you’re on the web, you’re trackable (referring to gen pop); if you use a mobile data plan, you’re trackable; you make a non-cash purchase, you’re trackable…privacy is hard.
Now most of the tracking is for commercial use. So the companies have a "better way" to show you adverts. Now if you take away that part, this is getting a big hit. So what happens when people can claim the income generated by the commercials shown? I mean the commercial is shown on the apps and sites on your phone, you paid form. Using the by the paid by you, internet provider using your data. So people need to be paid for every commercial shown on your device. When let's say 10% of the income generated, needs to go to the people where the commercial is pushed, it would clean up apps and sites dramatically. Tracking woud be obsolete because you need pay the person who sees that commercial. And because all data can be tracked, people can be very easy resolved to pay out. So in this case you can do an opt in methode if you want to see commercial and not an opt out and still see commercials.
Thank you Naomi. Not only our smartphones but maybe we are all connected to a network? You live in a democracy country but where I am if it wasn’t for Google and Microsoft services I would have been in the dark. There is a brighter side to their story and I hope that will reveal it self in the next decade. I am a big Apple fan by the way and using their late technologies, but when it comes to freedom of choice Google and Microsoft are unbeatable ❤
