A lot of the time, these cut areas are kept in to prevent loading errors that would require more extensive recoding to fix. Besides that, it's usually done to pad out the file size to completely fill out the cartridge, disc, or card the game comes on to prevent memory address issues.

Why on Earth would that cause difficult to fix loading errors? Just remove the code that loads it? Even in the case of removing a part of a scene instead of the whole thing, you can still only delete, say, the mesh, so you don't interfere with anything on the scripting side, but you've effectively removed that area. Also, "memory address issues"?? What? What kind? Why?

In Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep there's an unfinished world hidden in the game files. The world was based on Jungle Book that was scrapped and can be accessed with a cheat device.

Demon's Souls! There was an entire area of content that had to be cut that was actually turned into part of the game's cannon, where it was stated as destroyed in the beginning of the game. It took data miners years but eventually they where finally able to render what was left of the cut content, including enemy models. Love your videos btw, very easy to watch with great production.

The rest of Tamriel is in Skyrim in a low level of detail. It isn't unfinished or hidden. It's so that you can see them on the map screen. People have known that since 2011.

8:07 wait, there's supposed to be a barrier there? I remember passing right through there with a horse when I first got the dawnguard DLC because the map marker was pointing that way instead of the the actual area you're supposed to go in, and I wandered through that little forest area until I clipped through the ground into the infinite ocean.

4:15 Oh, so a few game engines have a pretty colorful "missing texture" image. In GameMaker Studio, if you make the engine draw a 3d block without a texture, it is just as black as a piece of coal.

It's all up to the graphics designers what they choose to put in as the default texture the game loads when it can't find the actual one. In Star Trek Online it's a featureless white texture. It's subtle enough you sometimes don't notice.... sometimes.

In Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep, there is an unused Jungle Book themed world. Most of the rooms are fully textured, and all are functional.

@@Blargy2inch Watch the clip again. There's a transition where it cuts from Morrowind to Cyrodiill. And when he turns north after looking at the White Gold Tower you can see a wall of tall mountains, which is the Jerall mountain range seperating Cyrodiil and Skyrim.

If you go to the developer showcase area in Ratchet & Clank 3, you can access a race level that allows you to drive around a mostly finished race track. This is a cut piece of content that was originally meant to be in the final game, but had to be cut for one reason or another. They left this (and a few other things) in the developer showcase area though.

Most hilarious thing was how many times Blizzard patched getting into Old Ironforge and people would find new ways in. Before my time I believe you could just blink through the door in the throne room. Then there was the trick of dying in the molten iron then running through the door as a ghost and respawning inside. Next there was starting a duel in a particular spot in the bank then booking it to the throne room where you'd polymorph the person and hope the sheep walked through the door. When that stopped working there was a ledge you could stand on and be polymorphed to fall through. When passenger vehicles were introduced things got wild. You could dismount sidecar and just clip through the door. After that was fixed you could mount large mounts like the mammoth in a nearby door-frame to clip out of bounds and fall through. Good times!

Back before the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj opened, you could bring a Hunter near them and use Eagle Eye to peek over. It was basically a flat plain with a bunch of sandstone spires organized in a grid, and trying to look at certain spots would cause Eagle Eye to auto-cancel. Also, there was basically a giant pit somewhere near Dire Maul that you could climb into.

These sorts of things are so fascinating, I could honestly watch videos on unused content all day and not get bored. Breath of the Wild making it onto a list like this really shocked me, especially considering the sheer amount of content that's hidden away there. Plenty of negative comments that I've seen. I don't delete any of them. Most of them are Elder Scrolls fans. They're apparently pretty passionate about the game titles and I messed one up in the video.

Absolutely, I try to be super transparent. Its not my favorite thing to find so many dislikes because I failed to mention one game in a video that has over 10 minutes of unique research that took me a while to gather, but it is what it is. Its not like its a written article where editors can go back fix details after its published.

Back in the earlier days of WoW, I would travel around the outer edge of the continents. There was a lot of unfinished areas out. Most of them have been removed since Cataclysm changed the world and allowed flying mounts in the old world.

Im loving your videos, the music, the mood, the recommendations such as “sit down to watch while listening to some record”, the pace you use to relate them is just right.., it’s a pleasure to watch your videos! I can relate a lot to this odd feeling every easter egg, forbidden or forgotten bit of any game can make us wonder, they’re the trigger for imagining what could have been, and what is to be behind a videogame, developing for the enjoyment of others. It somewhat feels like reading a book and then realising the writer was trying to mean something else, then you connect in a more deeper way, you bond with the game. I think you’re pointing out what’s really special about a lot of different games in such a pleasant way, and in the process of making your videos one can’t avoid to notice that you really enjoy doing it. Keep it up!

Hot Wheels one isn't really "unfinished" it's an FMV game, so that wire frame environment is a video. it's very very likely that it's intentionally themed this way. the music for the stage is Electronic/funky and futuristic matching the environment. this stage is likely just an Easter egg.

I think its a video with just the wireframe and no textures made. Collisions are also wonky on the map, suggesting its unfinished.

Most Tony Hawk games have a lot of unused areas. I've explored many of them myself. But that would of been cool to have Paris as a skate-able level. In Tomb Raider 3, there's five or six locations in the bonus level that one cannot access normally, and one of them actually links to the London Rooftops and even has parts of said level in it, but going out the bell tower of the cathedral where you start in the bonus level just leads to you falling and dying, unless you have a no boundary type of cheat in place and catch yourself on the ledge. Unfortunately, navigating to the rooftops from there is quite difficult, and a lot of it requires pixel perfect drops and ledge catches. I've always missed and fallen. What's funny about that is that there are deep puddles of water all around, but falling into those does not break your fall in this instance. You'll splash, but end up being a floating, glitchy corpse. Fun. Oh, and the glitches I used in testing this crash the game on the Game Over screen. Double Fun.

I think the giant valley in Breath of the Wild might've been a range for testing the momentum magic. You know, see how far you can knock something and watch it behave at the furthest potential reaches. If the visual physics renders right in first person binoculars well enough, you can determine where you stand on the processor requirements, etc.

There is one game with unfinished areas that are still inside the game's codes. One is Bloodborne. If you use the right codes on the Chalice Dungeon Rituals, you can create a whole unfinished dungeon that is presumably the original Final Boss area if you chose to fight the Moon Presence. You can encounter and fight the original version of this boss. It has an almost finished moveset, a hitbox, and even a health bar. You can even die to it. The whole area, while unfinished, still works well. You can't explore the dungeon, but you do get to see the gorgeous and big area you would have had to fight the incarnation of Nyarlanthotep before it was changed. At least the concept was later added for the fight against Orphan of Kos.

It should also be noted that these dungeon glyphs are still accessible. Also another youtuber (can't remember the name right now) also hosts a lot of content he re-added into the base game (via hacks, since it does not involve the chalice dungeon) that don't appear in those dungeons as well.

That gate in Skyrim, if you're on console and you save right up against that wall, there's a 50/50 chance you'll load in on the other side, and be able to explore. It happened to me and I was so confused why I was seeing no locations on my radar xD

Really good content, RU-vid had recommended a couple of your videos the last few weeks and I’m glad they did! You aren’t like other channels that just look at DYKG and repeat their facts. Also as a game dev I want to say that Botw Unfinished area was a test of the terrain engine. I can’t imagine why there would be such a big valley other than messing around with that. I remember doing the Abe's Odyssey easter egg where you run down into the pit just before the trap closes - but it wasn't incomplete. It was a full and challenging section. Is that only in certain regions then?

Sorry for ruining your hopes, but Skywind will never be good, that's it if it would be ever released. No playable demo was released by them even after 5 years in development, only things we saw was screenshots and videos. The things they say in their blogs show that they capable of making incredible models and textures, but as modders they are not really good (Ex. Claiming its imposible to make a morrowind style equipment system in skyrim (more than 3 eq. slots for armor) because of engine limitations, while even minor armor and equipment mods were doing that from 2012.

Dcard Dcardian I like your positivity ! Yet i cant help but be skeptical when i look over everything they posted, something tells me this is just a giant portfolio for people wanting to become graphical designers in the game industry and not a mod at all. Welp lets hope i am wrong and they are as competent in everything else as they are in making gorgeous looking screenshots

For the record, there WAS a working skywind demo a few years ago. It was extremely bare-boned, but it already had quite a few of the assets. It looked really good, but it was poorly optimized.

When you see something like the Tomb Raider tutorial being cut, usually what happens is that the programmer just doesn't want to end up breaking the rest of the code in the level and dummies it out. This is especially true in old cartridge-based games where removing the content would require a lot of effort in rearranging all your memory mapping, so you might as well just leave it in.

In Tomb Raider's case it was cut because Core Design wasn't allowed to finish the game. Square Enix wanted it out for the holiday sales and CD had to scrape together what they could. Unfortunately SE's poor decision forced an unfinished game to be released and CD to be fired and go bankrupt.

My fav game back in the days was Golden Sun for the GBA, u are on an Island the entire game. In Golden Sun 2 u were able to ship the Ocean. Its the same map as the first game but bigger. At one Spot u could jump off but to land on the Old Land which u should never supposed to be. It has mostly of the Old overworld Buildings but sadly they're not interacting

0:24-1:30 The first two Oddworld games used a grid-based system for movement, those are what those lines are for 0:24-1:30

I used to play Ultima Online and there was a place called "the star room" that was briefly accessible to the public. If I recall correctly it was a starry background, there were no walls but there were boundaries in the shape of a small room. Players were able to mark locations on runes and recall/gate players to them whenever they'd like so it spread like crazy and people hung out in there until the GMs fixed it. I didn't think I'd see it on this video so I thought I'd share.

Definitely, if you fall into an unfinished area accidentally in a normal playthrough its really jarring. But if you seek it out and find something crazy like these, its actually really cool. And thanks so much! I'll definitely be making more videos like these!

In the original spyro games if you are able to get the infinite swimming glitch in many places you are able to find many unfinished rooms, egg missions, levels and even duplicate worlds with no collision it's really cool to explore

The purple wall is just an inside render. There supposed to be an interior rendering triggered there. But either there is no trigger ore there is no interior rendering made. My guess is the latter.

My favorite area like this is in World of Warcraft, but now the area is accessible and updated. Back in the day the Karazhan Krypts were the coolest place to glitch into and run around, it is not entirely known what exactly it was for, but the most popular theroy was a scrapped dungeon or part of the Karazhan raid.. it is still to this day one of my favorite spots in the game

You know what? That clip you used in the beginning inspired me a little. What if there was a game that when you start out appears to be completely unfinished, some places white/empty/low poly like that, maybe some assets strewn around, but slowly a story begins to develop and there's some kind of twist that starts to explain why the world is so barren and in limbo... I would really want to play something like that now.

It could be that the Dragonborn DLC was originally going to have Morrowind as the setting instead of Solstiem but actually recreating the map would have taken them much too long.
