to everyone asking about jake webber here i think the person is just trying to point out that he’s never actually shown being a real part of the punk culture (correct me if i’m wrong). i personally don’t really have much of an issue with him as i do with people like caroline and tx2 who make it their entire platforms, but i get what you’re saying.

Okayyyy? So what?? Isn’t everyone a trend hopper when you really think about it…. I’m not a Caroline supporter or defender but I think a lot of the hate that she gets regarding her “aesthetic” is drawn out and ridiculous. And I’m saying this as a person who has been apart of alternative (specifically punk) culture for a very long time. Personally I think it’s ridiculous to care whether or not a goth or punk person is a “poser” like okayyyy it’s no big deal so what if she doesn’t check every box of what alternative is and who cares if you think they way someone expresses themselves is “a costume of punk culture”. I don’t give a fuck if a person who dresses punk does or doesn’t have a “punk mindset” or protest 24/7. And I feel that way about goth ppl too like why is this even an argument ITS JUST CLOTHES. Do I consider her punk NO but am I gonna flip out because she’s a “poser” also no. Like it’s honestly so sickening to see alternative people gatekeeping the style and culture of the alt sub genres it makes people not want to be part of it. But it becomes an issue (whether you're a poser or not) when you're trying to capitalize on that alt culture, creating an alt persona, making it your whole personality and trying to make a profit out of it...while also participating in gatekeeping the community from people who don't look "as goth/punk/emo and so on enough". Which she basically is doing.

I agree, Johnnie literally makes emo music. He's also a huge mental health advocate and donates to tons of organizations and I don't think dissing him is fair for that. Even if he hangs out with posers (which I don't see him do often most people he hangs out with are normies in the first place or people who have been in the emo scene for just as long) like their still his friends he's not gonna leave his best friends for that

Sadly they tend to be popular towards newer people in the scene, which isn’t entirely their fault. They talk the talk and act like they’re really in the scene, so people who are new to it don’t realize and are fooled much easier.

I really don't understand why. It's a subculture, it doesn't belong to anyone, that's just gatekeeping. There are so many different goth subcultures, the punk subculture is so complex, I don't understand how people seem to think there's a right or wrong way to be goth or punk. Even if you find someone cringy or ignorant within the community, it's not threatening or harming the subculture. If you find them ignorant, educate them instead of looking down on them. It's music, fashion, a mindset, a philosophy at best, not a religion or a cult. So many subcultures borrow from each other anyway, it's hard to imagine emo, scene and alternative existing if punk or goth never existed, so great if alternative people celebrate punk and goth culture.

I would even add, and i apologize for saying this to your comment, it's not directed at you, i'm just saying this because you kinda brought up the subject: when people gatekeep or call others posers, it comes off as very insecure, like why do people care so much about others as if it was threatening their identity? Are people listening or dressing a certain way because they need it to define themselves or because they enjoy it? If you have to fit certain criteria to call yourself part of a subculture, it feels very forced and non genuine. People lie, fake things, surf on trends for likes all the time, not sure why others should be bothered. I'll enjoy what I enjoy no matter what.

You can’t really “steal” a subculture. The thing I don’t understand is gate keeping a community which is even seen as bad by the punk/goth community. Only self conscious or new goths/punks even gate keep in the first place. Who is someone to tell another person they are a “fake” goth/punk or a poser since they don’t know them. I’m not talking about this Caroline person or whatever her name is, I’m just talking in general. So many times online I see people do bedroom tours for example and the room is covered in punk/goth albums and posters and shit and almost all the comments will be people calling them a poser, even when they don’t know them. Or a person dresses up in punk/goth fashion and is called a poser and when a person mentions listening to the goth/punk music and once again is called a poser. The only times you could call someone out for being a poser if it’s obvious publicly (like they’re a person who puts themselves online all the time) that they are only calling themselves punk/goth to get attention and don’t follow the ideologies of those communities and don’t truly like it etc. Also we shouldn’t call someone a poser if they don’t only listen to goth-punk music or if they don’t only dress up in a punk/goth way or not dressing up at all. This is just my opinion lol

well i think it means to like things (or at least pretend to) *because* its the flavour of the month. and then move on to the next thing when it suddenly isn't popular anymore. its different to genuinely enjoy something that also happens to be popular, and not just for the sole reason of it being popular.

I see it as people who are only trend hoppers only like those certain things BECASCE it's popular. They are just doing it for clout/popularity. When the trend of that fashion is dead theyll completely drop it and move on the next. (It's even worse when those said people go out of their way to make fun of someone still wearing the said fashion style 😭) it's just offensive- especially if the style is goth, punk, emo etc. Because it's very much music/political based.

You know I like some of Caroline music, in my opinion is good and enjoyable. When this happen with an artist that you follow the best thing you can do is pull a part the artist from the person. You can love someone art and hate the person behind it.

I am not against for “dressing” punk! It’s just the point people make when they see Caroline’s recent controversy, although it may personally feel wrong to me when rich influencers cosplay as “punk”, she doesn’t claim to be punk, so I have no reason to hate on this. Unlike some other influencers I will talk about in future…

Then it's not really Punk, it's alternative at best. Punk is not fashion, it is a musical subgenre based on political beliefs and stances. Same thing with goth. Sure there's a stereotypical type of dress but that's not really the set dress for those subgenres. So you can definitely dress alternative but to call it punk is misleading and watering down that term. Along with Goth.
