Today we are talking about two absolute heavy hitters in the analog synth world, and two insanely great starting points for getting into analog sound design: Moog Mother-32 and the Korg Minilogue XD. They are very different synthesizers as we’ll see, but what they do share in common is their completely analog sound generation.
Mother-32 and Minilogue XD are at a similar price point so I want to get down into the details and compare them against each other; share their strengths and weaknesses, and help you decide ultimately which one is best for you.

The XD is a MONSTER of a synth in terms of straight-to-the-point polyphonic patches. It's up there with the best synths I ever owned.

Thanks for this comparison. A really useful contrast, and good overview of the different systems IMHO.

Nice review. It's also worth mentioning how synths feel. Having once owned a Minilogue XD, I can say that the knobs/encoders are some of the best ever-smooth as silk with the perfect amount of resistance as they are turned. The build quality is fantastic (especially for the money....extra especially for used).

That's funny, the Minilogue XD-m was my first synth, and the Mother 32 was my second. I bought a second Mother 32, and the two together are an order of magnitude more useful than a single one. However, I make more modern sounding music, and I find the Minilogue XD fits that sound profile significantly better. The Mother 32s sound inherently vintage and extremely so, which is wonderful when that's what I want to reach for, but it absolutely can NOT sound "modern" and may be difficult to incorporate into your music making process if you're still mostly in the box, as there's a lot of EQing to be done on "vintage" synths to bring them up to a modern sound. One thing I will say about the Moogs, is their sound profile fits AMAZINGLY in a live setting alongside other instruments. The Minilogue XD sounds a bit to clean a lot of the time, but the inherently chaotic sound of a completely analog synthesizer works beautifully alongside guitars and real drums. Also, the effects on the Minilogue XD is extremely useful even in a DAW setting. Being able to recall your patches with the effects is super useful, as stuff like flangers, chorus, and other modulation effects can be absolutely integral to a sound and part of the sound design process. Nice video :)

These were very arbitrary arguments. And it's OK - everyone is different. However: pesets have been available on analogue driven syths for years - that's what having a hybrid gives you; and if one's desk leaves no space for anything else after placing a device the width of two and half Volcas on it, then clearly it's not a instrument issue. The standard for synthesizer interconnection is MIDI, not Eurorack analogue VC. It means the minilogue XD can connect to or receive from nearly all other synthesizers made after 1983, whereas Mother-32 can't - it can only receive MIDI-in. Accusing a synth of not having a patch bay is like faulting a violin for not playing bass notes.

Great video. please note, when you comment the minilogue sounds thinner, @3:04 you have the Minilogue about 6dB lower (eyeballing the graphs) in output power than the Mother 32, at least as shown by the graphs. 3dB is half power. I'd argue that if the levels were the same the minilogue might sound better than it does at the lower volume.

I wonder why the Minilogue sounds thinner and if it can be tweaked somehow to sound similar. I can only see more harmonics (bands) in the spectrum analyzer view. Could it be the only difference? Would simply adding more resonance help?
@greenhell4838
@greenhell4838 Год назад
Would not help unfortunately :(. Is it just the simple fact that on Mother the waveform is reversed?
@novalogue
@novalogue Год назад
It has a different waveform - but what i have heard the amplitude also wasnt even - some kind of bias in there probably?

I've compared Monologue and Minilogue Xd, when I used to have them both, and I found that Monologue sounds thicker. Looks like Minilogues has OSCs and filter modules from Prologue, which is also not very thick. But it's fact - Monologue's fatness could compete with Moog, but Minilogues - don't :(
@Ss-zg3yj

Can't agree that Korg sounds thin. You can't test synths like this (Yes, I own Minilogue XD and Moog Minitaur)

The Moog sub sequent 37 has been out since 2014 and has like 128 savable patch bays. 2:07

@@isocarboxazid You should probably watch the video again and click on the timestamp that I provided, maybe back up about 10 seconds where he says that it’s virtually unheard of for patch saving in the analog synth world. But, that’s just not true because the sub 37 has 128 save-able patch bays that you can create along with a substantial amount of presets, and it’s been out for quite some time. Try to keep up 🤓

The synth is not big at all compared to a standard keyboard synth. Looks rather small to me. Smaller than many synths. You must have a tiny desk.

Man, at least play the synths you're comparing. After all, we're here for the sound of what this, or that, can do for our music.

"You can save presets on this synth, which is virtually unheard of in the analog synthesizer world." What? No. There's quite a long list of monophonic and polyphonic analog synthesizers made in 2023 which are capable of saving presets.

I think he means at this price point. He mentions that somewhere not sure if its in this video though.
