Motherwort benefits us in so many ways and can be especially supportive for the “overworked and underappreciated,” as my guest, Maria Noël Groves, shares in this video. Please join us to hear about the gifts of motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca). You’ll also receive Maria’s motherwort tincture recipe, which she has aptly named: Motherwort Calming Relief Tincture.
Maria Noël Groves is a clinical herbalist who runs Wintergreen Botanicals Herbal Education Center and clinic, nestled in the pine forests of New Hampshire. Her business is devoted to education and empowerment via classes, health consultations, and writing with the foundational belief that good health grows in nature. She is the author of the award-winning, best-selling book Body into Balance: An Herbal Guide to Holistic Self Care as well as the book Grow Your Own Herbal Remedies.
Listen in for:
► How motherwort excels in supporting the nervous system, without creating a sedated feeling (Timestamp 11:50)
► How can you make a potent tincture with fresh herbs? (Timestamp: 23:35)
► Does motherwort have side effects on the thyroid gland? (Timestamp: 26:26)
Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation:
“One of the many aspects of motherwort that I really adore is the way that it helps support us when we are feeling anxious or just our emotional stability is a little bit off and it has benefits with long term use. But even in the moment, within minutes after taking the tincture, I and many of my clients will notice this immediate kind of grounding action.” (Timestamp: 07:33)
I've long respected Maria's work and herbal offerings, so it was a personal pleasure to have her on the show. Thank you for joining us today!

I had just moved to Maine (a few years back) and was asking my cousin if she had any stinging nettles. She said yes. So I went to her house and she showed me what she had. It wasn't nettles it was Motherwort. She was going to get rid of it. I was starting a medicinal garden. So I just walked around her place. I got the motherwort, pineapple weed, burdock, common mallow and horseradish. What a great start to my new garden. I love playing with and talking to people about herbs. Most of them think I am crazy, BUT I don't care. I love herbs. God's medicine.......

I don't know what it's like in Maine, but here in NH wild nettles isn't as common as people expect. I took me FOUR tries of someone giving me "nettles" to get REAL nettles - most of the time for me it was another mint family "nettles" like hemp nettle - haha! - but so awesome for you to be able to glean all those lovely medicinal herbs from your cousin's garden
@madmecyr

@@MariaNoelGroves Are the other varieties of nettle work the same and have the same properties? I'm here in northern Maine and I've found one local plant that has nettle qualities; I'm thinking it is slender nettle. Maybe mine is hemp nettle. I'll have to look that up :) Can it be used?
@MariaNoelGroves
@MariaNoelGroves Год назад
@@madmecyr Definitely you will want to key it out FIRST to be sure that you know what it is. GoBotany's "simple" key is a helpful online resource but sometimes a bit clunky. I also like/prefer Newcomb's Wildflower Guide for a semi-easy Northeast Field Guide - I often find Newbomb's illustrations and descriptions easier to use than the GoBotany info/pics. And to get *really* technical (but beyond most people's botany skills) for keying out plants Flora Novae Angliae or the more advanced GoBotany key. All that said, generally peaking other species of Urtica seem to be relatively interchangeable though my personal experience is with U. dioica only, and wood nettle (Leportea) likely has *some* similar benefits - a key distinguishing characteristic is that wood nettle leaves are both alternate and opposite vs only opposite in Urtica. Many mint family "nettle" plants can look like Urtica before they flower - hemp nettle (Galeposis), dead nettle (Lamium) etc - they do not sting and the flowers are very different but a lot of people mix them up and here in NH they're far more common b/c true nettles prefer rich soil (which is rare in our sandy, acidic lands) - not sure if Maine is similar in that regard. These mint family "nettle" plants (at least the genera I mentioned) seem to be nontoxic to consume but do not have the same medicinal benefits as Urtica. When I moved to NH, it took me FOUR tries when getting "nettle" from herb-minded colleagues to get *actual* nettle because people kept sharing Galeopsis. For more tips on plant ID, check out wintergreenbotanicals.com/plantidentification101/ :)
@madmecyr
@madmecyr Год назад
@@MariaNoelGroves Thank you for the resources. I'll do more investigating :) The plant I thought of as stinging nettle certainly has the sting and the flowering parts and seed droops look just like nettle; the stalks are slender and tall and growing in inactive farmland....so their soil is good albeit on the clay side.
@MariaNoelGroves
@MariaNoelGroves Год назад
@@madmecyr sounds more likely that it's a stinging or wood nettle! Slender nettle (U. gracilis) is often considered a subspecies or variant of regular nettle (U. dioica) and is basically identical in use. And with slender leaves, it seems less likely that it's a wood nettle - but I can't ID 100% from YT comments, of course ;)

Thanks for this interview Rosalee and Maria! I love motherwort and I have to say that if you tincture it in a nice brandy, the bitter flavor can taste really satisfying, almost like a dark chocolate. I agree with what Maria said about its grounding effect and I would add that it's like the kind of grounding that comes from receiving a loving hug - someone who really understands. I find that even drop doses can really be supportive. I've been leaning on it a little more this year to help with some of the ups and downs of going through menopause. Thanks for all the ideas of other uses - I really need to grow some in my garden! Happy spring ladies!

I had the same thought, Lisa! I follow the Kami McBride approach of using dried, freshly powdered plant material for infused oils, which Kami learned from Michael Moore (MANY thanks, Rosalee, for introducing me to Kami’s courses earlier on this podcast)! So after infusing the oil, I’ll probably melt in some beeswax to make a soothing abdominal balm. Depending on the smell, I might mix in some lavender oil or essential oil. Would love to learn how you’re approaching your topical remedy, Lisa!

@@VitalistCoaching I also like Kami. I will approach it like you...add some beeswax and maybe some EO's. Possibly even some infused Lavender oil just because 💜 I love topicals! And also why I lean more to the "plant" side of the equation and then go to EO's. Rosalee and John (Learning Herbs) were 2 of my 1st herbal teachers. I just love them!

I have a question, does motherwort have any effect or does it create problems for people who have any type of aneurysm. My doctor says I have a splenic artery aneurysm. It's about 1mm. He says to check it every 2 years. Since I suffer from panic anxiety attacks, I wish to take motherwort because the pharma pills they prescribed me do not work. I also have pbc Premature Ventricular Contractions, which the doctors says they are benign. They appeared after 2019.

In my yard I find that it likes it best where the soil is rich and vital - that seems to matter above all else - but it doesn't like being dried out and seems to often do best in part sun, though I have hard colleagues with farms (read: RICH amazing soil!) who get motherwort in full and part sun that is about 3xs taller than what grows in my own yard. We have sandy acidic soil thanks to our local pine forest, so our garden beds are still in a state of rehabilitation of soil vitality improvements.

For reference, I am also in New Hampshire in a cold zone 5/warm zone 4 cold pocket. But my teachers Michael Moore and Donna Chesner were able to cultivate Siberian Motherwort (not sure if it has different growing needs) in their high altitude Bisbee Arizona backyard garden.

Herbal birth control options are not my specialty - consider reaching out to herbalists Mischa Schuler/Wild Carrot Herbs, Elaine Sheff/Green Path, and the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism for classes and guidance on herbal and natural fertility awareness and care.

I am an Empath ... would this herb help me dealing with other people's emotion?
@MariaNoelGroves
@MariaNoelGroves 2 года назад
It might! As a flower essence and more energetic/vibrational remedy motherwort has the reputation to help us have healthier boundaries while still being ale to maintain our emotional warmth. (I tend to think of it for caretakers and/or when families/adult siblings are going through challenging times settling an estate after a parent has passed.) Yarrow is another herb to look into for that type of energetic boundary/protection support, as a flower essence or in other formats but from a more energetic perspective - such as chewing on a leaf or holding a piece of the flower, or taking a few drops of tincture.
@MariaNoelGroves
@MariaNoelGroves Год назад
Seeing your question again and wanted to add - other flower essences to look into for this include yarrow (especially white, although other colors lend protective support in different ways) and possibly (for more toxic energies) stinging nettle. I think of motherwort flower essence specifically when we need gentle, nourishing support in our own boundaries, so that we can better maintain our own self care and not get overwhelmed with other people's stuff, yet still be able to have emotional warmth (for example: parents, family relationships, caretaking arrangements). At least, that's my training and clinical experience with flower essences. :)

Will this cause bleeding?
@MariaNoelGroves
@MariaNoelGroves Год назад
Motherwort is historically and clinically known to have emmenagogue effects, which may increase menstrual bleeding. It's generally not recommended during pregnancy for that reason. That said, there is also a history of use and modern research during childbirth to reduce the risk of hemorrhage. I am not aware of other blood-thinning properties. But if you have a bleeding disorder or are taking blood thinning medications, always be extra cautious and consider professional guidance.
