Moto Guzzi V7 III Stone : 1000 Mile Review
28/10/10 : Touring & Long Term Review just added : • Moto Guzzi V7 III Ston...
06/07/18 : Just fitted a pair of BT 45’s : White-lining has gone! Also they feel more pliant. Much better feel than the OEM Pirelli’s.
** Disclaimer : No littering was committed during the making of this movie although several hundred flies and aphids were most definitely harmed **
1000 miles in and I'm smitten by the Moto Guzzi V7. It's delightful, charming and is actually really quite practical and usable. 52HP is enough to have fun with! This one is a 2017 model, which I bought late last year. The bike is fitted with Dart flyscreen and a non standard, slightly shorter seat from the Guzzi catalogue.
Of course, the siren call of the Guzzi cult is now calling me, so I expect all sorts of oddness to start happening soon.
This video was uploaded in 4K/UHD but as far as I can see 1080P is the highest resolution available. If anyone is able to see the 4K version, please let me know.
It's so lovely that for private use only, here are some Hi-Res images for download.

As an Italian I can tell you that a perfect pronunciation is not important. You are clearly not Italian so none will be upset for that (beside it's not so bad..you hear much much worse). The only important thing is that you love and enjoy your Italian motorcycle !!:D

Thanks Gerardo! Yeah, I’m definitely not Italian, although I did make a fine risotto this evening and thoroughly enjoyed the Mugello MotoGP 😀 And yes, I love my Italian motorcycle! Thanks for your comments and for watching, cheers, Phil.

Currently own a 1989 Moto Guzzi Mille GT 1000 cc that I have had for 20 years. Once took me 120 miles on one cylinder at highway speed when one spark plug wire crapped out on a Sunday morning with no shops open. At almost 70 years old it has gotten too heavy to maneuver in and out of situations. Purchased a 2013 Moto Guzzi V7 Stone at more than 100 pounds less wet weight. Absolutely love it. Will stay with Moto Guzzi for the rest of my riding life. I have owned BMW, Laverda, Ducati, Moto Morini, Triumph, BSA, Zundapp, Indian, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Cagiva and loved them all for different reasons, but the fact that I can physically handle the weight of a bike that will cruise (illegally) at 85-90 mph for as long as I need, looks good, is reliable and affordable and unique, why shop anywhere else?- -Mike Battle

Beautiful. Thoughtful. Enjoyable. I watch this review once/ week and it brings me so much joy. It’s a constant reminder of how much I love my Stone. For how big motorcycle culture is in SoCal, I’m astonished how few of them I see here (tends to be the land of Triumph around here). It’s a head turner to say the least. Happy I own one and hope the bike gives you years of joy. Keep making videos! Your pacing and tone feeds your wonderful storytelling.

Thanks so much for your comments Jona and very interesting to get a view from over in the US and SoCal. Watching the video every week - wow! Even I don’t do that😄 I’ll try and get more videos out - next one on the V7 will hopefully be a touring review / however the cinematography won’t be as good as I’ll be taking a pocket camera with me / hopefully the scenery and weather will make up for it. Thanks for watching, cheers, Phil.

That'll be great to see. I love touring videos. I just picked up an Sony RX100 mark 5-- super compact, but has a decent focal length and fast aperture and 4k video. I'd highly recommend if you want the ability to keep it cinematic and also mobile.
@muradbyunus

Also your 4k version shows up just fine on my computer. If you're exporting anywhere from 35-70 mbps for your bitrate, you're solid, and looks like you've done just that.

Good evening Jona - funnily enough I have the RX100V also - a fabulous little camera - some of the shots in the video were taken with it, although the majority were taken with the Canon C200. You can probably tell the RX shots are the ones with full depth of field - i.e. the final shot. And yes, it's the one I'm taking away with me, cheers, Phil.

Thanks Jona...On my 5K Mac, I don't get the 4K option, but on a UHD TV I do...I wonder if it's a Safari limitation or something? I'll try another browser and see what happens. Thanks for letting me know, cheers, Phil.

Good evening! Well, I waited until I was 51 before getting a Guzzi (having wanted one since I was 18)...So you could be right! I've also started to listen to the radio more, suck boiled sweets and hum under my breath so it's not all good :-) Still, Guzzi's are good for your soul but maybe keep the GSXR AND get a Guzzi if you can! Thanks for tuning in and stopping by, cheers, Phil.

Morning - personally, I'd say it's too small for a passenger - at least for any journey over an hour or so. The engine is strong though, so would be able to handle it. Hope that helps, cheers, Phil.

Thanks!! Best V7 III-video I have seen so far. Excellent imagery, perfect moods, love the soft bokeh... I have to add: I just bought this very same green model (exchanged the black for a brown seat and put spoke wheels in place). Love your film, love the bike. Thanks a bunch

Afternoon Michael, I never expected to hear the phrase ‘bokeh’ in context of a motorcycle video 😄! Many thanks for your comments, it’s good to know the shots are appreciated and the idea behind the video was just that - to get some great images that regardless of subject, look cinematic. Aside from the GoPro footage though! Hmmm green tank / brown seat and spokes...very classy! Cheers, Phil.

I totally agree. I have had dozens of bikes over the years, and like the author, I was also a young two-stroke rev-head at one stage. But you grow up and your values change. More recently I started up a small motorcycle touring company here in Australia, and I was looking for the right bike. The 'right' bike had to be able to get around the twisties, be able to tour the straight bits in between, it had to be economical, reliable, have a good touring range, and most of all - it had to have a bit of 'cool'. I mean, who wants to ride a sewing machine, or do 300+kms a day on a hard-seated plastic enshrouded sports bike, or to try and look graceful doing a U-turn in a car park on 350kgs of American iron... not me. So after many test rides and much research I purchased my first V7. I now have six. Love-em. These are the most under-rated bike on the market. I feel like I am holding onto some news that should be shared. So here I am sharing...
@80eightReviews
@80eightReviews 6 лет назад
Afternoon David, many thanks for your interesting, well made and thoughtful comments. I think I might need to come to Aus! Of course you need to buy one more so you’ve got V7 x 7...Agree with you completely on all points and I’m off to the Alps on mine in the autumn. I’m looking forward to having no pressure to whizz around everywhere but just to enjoy the ride, the scenery and the ease of everything. Thanks for watching, cheers, Phil.

The Royal Enfield Bullet-Classic has even more cool factor. Although it doesn't have the straight line speed it can U-turn inside one lane. Maintenance is more often but less complicated, it's easier to get right, e.g. hydraulic tappets that need no attention every service. Surprisingly perhaps it has more sophisticated suspension, progressive springs and dual rate damped forks, gas shocks at rear. Even greater range, almost 300 miles. Although on paper very similar weight to the V7, it is significantly lighter to shift about. Both bikes are very easy to ride but the Enfield needs less rider input, less concentration, so one can spend more time viewing the scenery.

@80eightReviews 6 лет назад
Good morning - well, I don’t see why not. It does pretty much everything you could want - aside from extreme speed and two up touring capability, so if neither of those are required, then it’s spot on. While I’m lucky enough to have several bikes, the Guzzi is the one I’m intending to keep for many, many years and if it ends up being my only bike then I wouldn’t be too upset. There’s a sense of simple ruggedness about the bike, plus it’s one that I think will age really well. As I get older I value aspects of motorcycles that perhaps I didn’t before - such as ease of use and the Guzzi really delivers that. Cheers, Phil.

I got my 850 Special on friday 25/3-22. A friend of mine collected it , as I am not allowed to drive it. The licence no. is NB 7458 , and it looks and sounds great. I recieved a use + maintenance book, in Norwegian «instruksjonsbok», or a owners manual. Given the average age of Moto Guzzi owners/drivers, they’ve deserved something better then a 145 mm x 100mm book in small print ! I will have my first date at the mc driving school 28/3-22 . As I do not approve of new things, I am in for a real challenge. Important to stay calm and be patient , hoping to be able to drive this (blue) machine in august/september , alone, and with a driving licence !

Hello Phil , a little utdate: I’ve had 5 driving lessons , each 1.5 hour long. The schools bike is a 2 cyl. Yamaha with 700 cc engine . I must admit , I am not the perfect mc rider, being stiff and unrelaxed, but it is getting better! Have used my V7 on an unused gravel field , trying to learn the basics, and how to drive at walking pace. I knew mc riding would not come easy , it was the same when I started with both cars and lorries, lots of trying and failing….. But there Are some good news too , I completed the theoretical test at Statens Vegvesen , witch is the authorities who is in control of the driving tests and licences. Had hoped being able to drive the bike on a holiday this year , but I do not think it is possible , new plan must be to Get the driving licence this year. I am a member of the Norwegian Moto Guzzi Club, and they have a Local branch very close to where I live. We meet once a month , with different activities each time. Average age about 60 , grey hairs , and lot of smiles. They Are more into older Moto Guzzi’s, and it is not uncommon to have more than one bike. May all good people have a nice summer!

The sensation of the front wheel not being connected to the road and being bounced off line is down to the Sport Demon tyres. I felt that immediately on my V7.ii and so swapped to Avon Roadriders. It now feels well connected and no hop, skip and jump; they don't wibble over road repair patches and they also grip in the wet. They're also considered an upgrade to the BT45s on Bonnies.
@80eightReviews
@80eightReviews 6 лет назад
Afternoon Jeff, thanks for that. I’ve swapped to BT45’s now (luckily the Pirelli’s wore out really quickly) and the difference is incredible. Thing is when I went for a test ride (on a V7II) I thought “this handles alright” and on the basis of that bought the VIII. On the ride home I wondered what was going on! The front tyre felt like it was floating. I kinda got used to it but now realise the V7II must have something other than Pirelli’s on it. Still all is good now and I might just try the Avon’s next time around. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, cheers, Phil.
@jeffslade1892
@jeffslade1892 6 лет назад
80:8 Photography & Design - I test rode the V7.iii and found the Sport Demons skittish. I test rode the V7.ii that I eventually bought with Sport Demons on and it wasn't so bad, the newer bike may have stiffer suspension. I actually preferred the ride on the V7.ii. However I had them change the tyres to Avon Roadrider, which I know. Although not a 'sport' tyre they do have a higher rating and do wear well. Myself, I have not ridden on Bridgestone for some years, so perhaps an unfair comment. Hope they work out well.

Evening Ray, you’re right, there is something incredibly authentic about a Guzzi..Why else would they continue making an absolutely mad engine configuration, that makes no sense on paper, yet, makes perfect sense when ridden. I’m lucky in that there is a Piaggio dealer 100k away, while my local non-franchised dealer is a Guzzi-Head. Having said that, the V7 has a sense of absolute solidity about it...So yes, a class act - I’m even considering buying a t-shirt! Thanks for watching, cheers, Phil.

great video. I have the v7III Special myself. only gripe I have with mine is I cant figure out how to change my average fuel consumption from litres to mpg. does the stone have this function? have you figured it out?
@80eightReviews
@80eightReviews 6 лет назад
Morning Jon, thanks for the comments and for watching. As for the unit of measure for fuel consumption, yes the stone does have this. I spent a slightly confusing 17 minutes getting it sorted. It’s in the manual page 44, but in order to edit the various functions, you have to be in “Odometer’ mode first, then press and hold the mode button for a few seconds until you are able to edit the various functions. Changing the odometer unit of measure is the 4th one. Once there you press the mode button quickly to toggle between miles and KM. It’s a bit hit and moderately frustrating - so suggest you do it on a wet Sunday evening...Good luck! Cheers, Phil.

Do you think this bike would be too small/underpowered for a 220lb/100kg guy?
@80eightReviews
@80eightReviews 5 лет назад
Good evening! Well, I would say it's more about size rather than weight. I'm 5"10 and it's while it's OK for me, if my legs were any longer it might be a tight fit. Weight wise I'm around 160lb and the bike feels fine. The engine is torquey and free revving, so another 60lbs would be no problem, so I think it's more about fitting what is a quite small machine. Hope that helps and thanks for watching, cheers, Phil.

I have never ridden a Moto Guzzi and I don't know anyone who owns one. I ride a BMW 1200 GSa from 2010 that I just love in most respects. However I have always been intrigued by the Guzzi's since I read about them in a magazine as a child. I also saw a v7 Stone parked in the street a few days ago and must say it really looks beautiful! It seems a bit strange to me to only have one disc brake at the front and not to have more horse powers but then again I haven't ridden this bike. I really enjoyed your video and your way of telling what you think of the bike. Thanks from Sweden!
@80eightReviews
@80eightReviews 2 года назад
Hello! Well, if you’ve been intrigued by Moto Guzzi since being a child then you were obviously brought up well and now need one in your life 😀 The horsepower is just fine and perfectly compliments the chassis. Unlike other “retro” styled bikes which have modern underpinnings, the V7 is more like the real deal yet engineered very well but you still ride it like an old school bike. I took mine to Europe a few years back and it never felt lacking. It would cruise at 85mph all day, scrape its way round corners and had a 200 mile + range. Perfect! The front brake is fine also, particularly as the front suspension is soft and not so well damped, yet still somehow seems to work really well. Thanks for watching, hope all is well in Sweden 🇸🇪, cheers, Phil.

@80eightReviews
@80eightReviews 6 лет назад
Evening Vincent, glad you enjoyed the review & thanks for your comments. Yes, like you I didn't want to ruin the look of the bike with a huge screen + the Guzzi one, over here in the UK, is like £170! It's a bit too big also. The one I've fitted is made by Dart Flyscreens www.dartflyscreens.co.uk and comes in at £80. It's real easy to fit and pretty good quality. It helps a little bit - obviously it does nothing for weather protection, but I find it helps with the wind pressure so that I can cruise easily at 85mph / 135KPH (on private roads only of course). I'd say it's gained me about another 10-12KPH cruising speed maybe? The only thing is, it directs the airflow to the bottom of my helmet - and while it doesn't cause buffeting it is noticeably louder, so earplugs have to be worn. I'm five foot ten for reference. Hope that helps. Guzzi's are the best! Cheers, Phil.
@Vincent79Vega
@Vincent79Vega 6 лет назад
Thanks a lot, this helps. But I am still undecided if I should buy the Classic or Piranha. But I think the Piranha is only style with no protection. Yes the Guzzi original ones are much too expensive, the small aluminium one looks good, but I dont want to pay that much money and the touring one is too big. Looking forward for your next videos ;)

Good morning Lorenzo, many thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the review. There’s nothing like the feeling of waiting for a new Guzzi to arrive 😀 As for the windshield, it’s made by Dart Flyscreens and it’s very good quality. On a recent trip to The Alps, I was cruising at 130/140 kph and felt very little head / shoulder pressure or buffeting and while it’s difficult to tell, possibly that was the screen just taking the edge off the wind flow. Either way it looks pretty good! One thing it does do, compared to having no screen, is make the wind noise louder - so earplugs are a necessity. Hope that helps and all the best with your new arrival! Oh, the V7 touring review is coming soon, cheers, Phil.

Hey William - is that the bike or tyres? The bike is fine, I mean there’s no protection of course but wear the right gear and you’ll be fine. The bike behaves itself in wet conditions and I’ve never had any problems with it. The original Pirelli tyres are dreadful in the dry and I swapped mine to Bridgestone BT-45 followed by Avon’s. Both great tyres and no concerns in the wet at all. It’s worth turning the traction control off though as it’s very sensitive. Aside from that all is good. Guzzi is how we have always pronounced in blighty, my French mates say Treeomf for Triumph, and yanks Doocarti so each to their own. Owned several Guzzis, great bike, shaft drive and tappet adjustment make for easy maintainance, I would guess, fuel injection has now made the throttle lighter? , Moto Guzzi club GB used to be good club, good rallies and knowledge. Guzzi trivia-the MGCGB magazine is (or was) called Gamabalunga, which means long legged in Italian,, Bloke called Steve Wesson had a small guzzi shop and he went on to open the Ogri cafe. The guzzi factory is still in Mandello, where they had a wind tunnel to design streamlining. Great Marque,Ewan McGregor is (or was) a guzzi fan., enjoy your guzzi.

@80eightReviews
@80eightReviews 6 лет назад
Thanks! The carbon looks fabulous! As for the fly screen it’s made by Dart Flyscreens - it’s exceptionally good quality, very thick polycarbonate and very easy to fit and at £80 lots cheaper than anything Guzzi do themselves. With respect to the airflow, it doesn’t so much cut it down as move it higher and smooths it out, so now it hits me in the chin bar of my helmet yet doesn’t shake my head about. It’s definitely taken some of strain off my shoulders when travelling at cruising speeds. I’d imagine the Guzzi one is better but from an aesthetic perspective, it just looks a bit too big to me. Hope that helps, thanks for watching, cheers, Phil.

@@80eightReviews Actually I was shocked as well when I first saw it, it took me a few seconds to understand ^^. I think the camera angle finally rang a bell. Great presentation of the bike btw, I love the V7. Greetings from Paris. Gaël.

Thanks Gael and of course I picked the rag up - especially as it’s my own doorstep 😄 Still, I was half expecting a load of comments from irate Brough Superior fans and involved comments about longitudinal v-twins versus transverse etc, etc. Paris? Brilliant - love your city, hopefully I can still visit after March 29! Cheers, Phil.

Well said Gael! I’ll apply for my international drivers permit now - the last one I had expired in 1983 😀

I’m 61 , been through some hard times the last 3 years. Sometimes your life is stuck In the wrong gear , and you’ll have to make some changes. A week ago I bought a new 850 Special , In the beautiful blu colour. I do not have the license , I have not ridden one meter on a mc. Gone start with driving lessons 28/3 , hoping. A: I manage to take the mc test , B:I fancy driving a mc. At least I have the right hair color for driving a Moto Guzzi : Grey ! PS: As I got none experiance concerning mc’s , I spent some hour’s looking at You Tube !

Good evening! That’s quite some story - buying a bike having never ridden one before, that’s quite something. I admire your style very much - that is how to do it. I’m impressed! The Guzzi will see you through it. Thanks for stopping by, let me know you get on, cheers, Phil.

Thanks for the nice review, seems to be a great bike. One question: these are made in Italy, correct?
@80eightReviews
@80eightReviews 4 года назад
Good morning - yes, every single bike in the MG model range comes out of the factory in Mandello del Lario - and if my V7 is anything to judge by, pretty much all of the components are sourced / manufactured in Italy also. If that's wrong - I'm sure someone will let us know. Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment, cheers, Phil.

Exquisite review, sir. Wouldn't expect anything less elegant from a Guzzi rider. I would really appreciate your view on a matter: After a little more than a decade, I have decided to get back into riding and purchase my first moorcycle. I used to ride my father's bike for a while (I was 24). In retrospect it was not a fun experience - mostly due to my beginner mistakes on a relatively non-forgiving 90s japanese chopper. Now, being at the age of 38, I find myself more mature when on the road and still in denial with speed. As I consider myself a novice rider, I would like your opinion about the v7 being my first ever bike. Some reviews tend to mention the sensitive throttle as a big No-No for inexperienced riders, while others (the majority) tag the v7 as a great (if not an ideal) bike for people like me. Of course, Guzzis are far more than just a plane label - it's a way of thinking life as a whole. It's a "cherishing every moment" kind of bike - if I may be more philosophical! But, philosophy or romance aside, being a little practical is not harmful - especially when it comes to being safe. Forgive my impertinence!

Good morning - many thanks for your kind comments and it’s very good to know you found the review enjoyable. Like most modern bikes with fuel injection, the initial clutch out / first gear / accelerate manoeuvre can feel a little “digital” especially given the Guzzi clutch pull and throttle are so light. Thing is any rider will get used to this in five minutes, so in no way is it a problem. Once on the move it’s an extremely easy, forgiving and comfortable bike to ride. Not scary yet has enough for a rider not to get bored. Downshifting is a different technique to chain driven bikes with a slipper clutch - you just need to feed the clutch out slowly so the shaft doesn’t get upset. Again, in five minutes any rider with a bit of feel will deal with this no problem. Seat height is super low, it steers easy and instils a lot of confidence. If you’re looking for a beginners bike which you want to keep, the Guzzi is it. If however, you want a beginners bike for say six months before ‘moving up’ then any of the Japanese 300 cc bikes are probably better. Thing is, once you been bitten by the Guzzi bug....there’s no going back! Hope that helps and thanks for watching, cheers, Phil.

@@80eightReviews I thank you for your thorough reply. The thing is I've already been bitten by the Guzzi bug, before I even ride one. Surely, I fall into the first category - I intend to keep it. Again. many thanks.

How tall are you? Im not sure I want the Guzzi stone, triumph Street cup, kawi z900rs. A Guzzi dealer is not close to my location so I have no idea how I will fit on it....I would get rearsets and clip one....I'm 5'11"

Just ordered mine. Which dart screen is that? And is it effective? Looking forward to buzzing round Derbyshire on it.
@80eightReviews
@80eightReviews 4 года назад
Morning! Thanks for stopping by - the screen is the Dart Classic - fabulous quality and real easy to fit. It works well - probably adds another 5mph to the comfortable cruising speed and smooths the airflow although it does make the wind noise louder. Hope that helps, Cheers, Phil. P.s. and The Guzzi doesn’t ‘buzz’ it ‘thrums’ 😀

Nice photography. V7 III Anniversario here...about 1000 miles as well. The changes from version II to v III are significant. I was not expecting such a smoorh shifting gearbox...the aftermarket exhaust I was planning is not necessary...and the bike starts and runs fine without the typical Italian need to warm it up a lot. The only issue I have is neutral is a little hard to find - that's it. Oh... That and you have to keep telling people what it is they are looking at - most have never heard of Moto Guzzi...which is fine by me.

Morning Rob, glad you liked the video and thanks for your comments. I’ve never ridden a V7 II so it’s interesting to read your thoughts. I find the III just really easy to use - everything is really light, especially the clutch pull. And the anniversario is just gorgeous...Enjoy, cheers, Phil.

It must be something Italian Rob. I ride a Ducati Monster and you’re right, it starts up very unconvincingly and then comes to life. Below 900 miles it was a nightmare to find neutral, all good now and I find it no problem.
