Years back (the mid-'70s) working in a Motorcycle dealership in Ann Arbor, I encountered a couple touring the western hemisphere on a Moto Guzzi Ambassador. They had traveled from upstate N.Y. to Point Barrow, Alaska, down to Patagonia and back. We changed the oil, tightened spokes, and did other maintenance for the next leg of their travel which I recall as Florida. The Bike had over 120,000 miles on it and never caused them any problem other than road hazard stuff. It has been a dream of mine to one-day own one...time is running out.

I tested one the other day. Cant believe that it's the same mill as my v9 bobber just reworked. It had so much more ummph. Really nice bike when you consider price point its way ahead of the pack of the other bikes in the category unless you just have money to burn.

Excellent review, well done! I wonder how hard it will be to move the pegs up a bit to get some ground clearance, seems to be the consistent complaint across all the reviews. Otherwise, I think it hits the mark. I'd love a mellow good looking bike, with solid components that can get out of its way if you want to pick up the pace. The only flight in the ointment is that Triumph's Scrambler 1200 might blow this thing out of the water on motor alone. That 1200 twin just sounds like a peach. Thought the Triumph is certainly less long-haul friendly. Can't wait to try these bikes in the near future!

Hmm. Guzzis have always been my favorite brand having owned a early '70's v7 sport. The handling was amazing. It just felt so planted. Pick a line and it would hold it even if you hit a bump mid corner. Inspired confidence even in the hands of a mediocre rider like myself. I always wondered if the rotating mass of the engine, flywheel, 2 plate dry clutch etc vs. the wheel s turning at 90° to each other created a gyroscope that made it feel so stable. Also loved the huge front drum brakes that almost filled the space between the axel and rim so that the spokes were really short. They would fade however despite the elaborate finning that was evident everywhere on the bike and was a joy to look at. Many years later I owned a couple pseudo off road BMW s but the handling never came close to the Guzzi. To be fair they had almost had twice the suspension travel but I needed the more aggressive tires to handle the funky dirt roads where my home is. I really liked the Metzler tourance 3s for the dirt but you could wear them out on one week on a long tour if you rode them at freeway speeds. But tubes? No way! BMW managed to combine spokes and tubeless tires although the rear tires were a bitch to change. Go Guzzi!

A shaft drive on a Adventure bike? What a brilliant idea! Apart from Beemers all adventure bikes should have this considering the amount of dirt they see. It’s a no brainer.
@Rusty-Gold
@Rusty-Gold 5 лет назад
There are a lot of ADV motorcycles with shaft drive. However most of them are, like the Beemer, 1200 cc's and up. Those are also quite a bit heavier. Eg. Super Ten, Tiger 1200, Honda VFR 1200X, Moto Guzzi Stelvio et cetera.

@mld Thosands on the Super Ten. My opinion on GS's comes from other GS riders. A fine mount, but I don't feel quite as bulletproof as the Super 10. If the Super 10 did not exist, then I would be on a GS. Cheers.
@Winterstick549
@Winterstick549 5 лет назад
@mld It does great on crappy, potholed, cratered roads. Adventure bikes are made to tackle crappy, beat to crap roads. Any bike can take a well driven dirt road. Its the cratered asphalt and rough, rocky roads that count. Sand and mud will depend on ones tires.

Especially when a truck comes around the corner from the opposite direction, while taking up the entire lane from center to curb. Seen it happen a few times, happened to me a few times while driving a van. Some motorcyclist forget they're on a public road with traffic coming from the opposite direction. When I'm riding my bike I keep to the curb side of my lane just so don't get wiped out in case someone decides to go wide.

I was a bit surprised to hear how heavy it is. I have recently bought a new V9 (for just over half the price of the V85 !) which I would have thought is pretty much the same, and I have seen two weights for the V9, 195kg and 204kg. For me, being an old codger, 200kg is heavy! I ride it 45 miles each way to work, a lot of which is filtering between stationary trucks and cars on the motorway at 20mph, and it doesn't run over cats eyes and tarmac ridges at all well. It is very smooth at 70mph though, in between the traffic jams. My V9 doesn't have a rev counter which I find annoying.

Too many 'er' and 'erm' interjections. And loads of time spent with a static camera describing things that you can't see. I may yet buy the bike, mind. Piss-poor presentation IMHO.

How is this a nice review?? He couldn’t name the front or rear shocks. The video transitions were awful. Some of the shots are underexposed. Sat Nav taking up all the screen space and requiring you to flip between screens is ‘intuitive’???? Wtf! And has he heard of BMW and KTM? Lol
