Love the Apostles. We have been there many times and done that helicopter trip . Lorne is a great place to stay if you go back. See you in a couple of weeks !
I toured Oz in 2013 on a GS. Hired as it was cheaper than temp import. 1 month east to west and visiting family i have out there. Roadhouses expect nothing more than either a curry or chicken schnitzel and of course cold beer!!!. I started in Syd, Newcastle, Putty road (Bike road), down to Canberra/Wollengong, 12 Apostles, then north via Maree (back roads), 200ks of corregations to William Creek (best curry), Cober Pedy (white man in a hole in aborigini as is mining town), Uluru - was going to get permits for the Aboriginal lands 600ks unsealed to Leonora, was told not to bother on a bike too dangerous as its not often travelled if you break down , so Alice, Down to Port Augusta, boring, really boring, nullabor to Norseman onto Perth. Flew from Perth to Darwin and back and flew back to blighty from Perth. They have a strange law about camping remote rural areas that not more than 20 mtrs from the road, so if you get lost then can find you, some are mandatory checkings with Police, if you stop for a breather, people will stop to check on you. EPIRB is a must if your solo in the middle of nowhere. Loved the trip, nearly died 3 times to 20 emus running towards me, wombat in the road on a bend and a damn brown snake under my tent next morning. Loved it, love the country and the people, so stay safe out there bud!
Logistically it would be easier but renting a bike for one month in New Zealand was the same as shipping out there. Then there's all the gear you have to take/buy instead of attaching it to the bike which doesn't cost extra as you pay for the volume not the weight of the crate. Rental agreements can restrict where you can travel so the outback would most likely have been off limits.
