I think its because it's something that most of us can only dream of doing. 😁 I've only just got Alana camping in this country, I'm not sure half way across the world behind a toilet block would do it for her just yet. 😂 Do you have any rough ball park figure into the cost of the whole trip? Also, how long did it take to plan it or was only small parts planned and the rest was decided once you were there? 😀
Thanks. It also doesn’t help that’s it taken this long to edit it all and the trip itself was nearly five years ago. It would have cost somewhere between £5K - £7.5K maybe more if I’m in denial of how damaged my wallet was. The flights and the first lot of shipping were booked quite a bit in advance of the whole trip so some of the big costs were out of the way early on. Then two other lots of shipping on trip were big costs then food, fuel, camping, hostels and fun stuff after that. Planning was half prepped and half winged on the fly. The shipping was the biggest bit of planning. I started with the dates when I wanted the bike in and out of each country then the shipper organised shipping to meet those dates and liaised with local contacts in NZ and OZ. Once that was confirmed flights could be booked, E visas sorted for OZ, carnet for the bike and any technical paperwork sorted. This was late spring/summer for a trip that started in January and the bike from leaving my house to getting back was gone for nearly a year on a trip that was 3 1/2 months. I had a list of places I wanted to visit and put a post on Facebook so my Topdeck passengers could shout if they wanted me to visit. Then it was just made up as I went to try and hit everywhere within my time and how many days I wanted to stay somewhere. Anything that needed to be booked in advance I just booked a few days before hand. Hostels at the start and end of each leg were booked in the summer planning all other camping was just found at the end of the day. Bear in mind this was pre covid when the world functioned so shipping rates were a lot less than they are now.
@DTWTheWanderingMuzungu To a mear minion like me, the trip could've been last year, and I wouldn't have known. 😄 In terms of cost, I was expecting it to be a lot worse than that with all the shipping and the flights. Thanks alot for the detailed response 👍🏻 😁. Should I be waiting 5 more years for the trip across the USA on 2 wheels to be released? 😄
@@ScottandAlana4x4 Yes it will definitely be longer than 5 years as it was all planned and the bike was ready to ship. Then the week before I dropped it off to go over to Canada lockdown happened and everything got cancelled. Nearing 4 years later and the trip still on the to do list.
