Let’s start this project with a problem statement: Motors can be hard to control. Can EEforEveryone establish a way to make motion more accessible to hobbyists? Let’s discuss.

Sería interesante hablar sobre los protocolos de modbus y mavlink.

Hola! Hopefully the response makes sense... a bit of google translate! ¡Totalmente! Sin embargo, primero tendré que aprender sobre ellos. :) ¡Estamos juntos en este!

@@EEforEveryone we can talk in our idiom and traslated it. Don't worry.

seems like you are set on going the low voltage DC route, my biased wish would have been atleast a sprinkle of AC motor control. That would lead to discussing and designing EMC ,inrush limiting, active vs passive rectifier, PFC, software dc bus ripple compensation, slip PID control, interface isolation and alot more. But i will be following this project with a great interest! common dc bus, dc brake chopper?, fast hardware shutdown protection? I hope you include some software design too, i would love to see the modbus implementation. and show your success/frustration with the modulation strategy, interrupt service routine, current limiting/shutdown algorithm etc. Good luck!

Hello Ghoetic! In general, I'm always conflicted about voltage limits. I try to encourage safety and never know what a person might do without a mentor next to them. As "that guy" that leaned against a chassis during a HIPOT test... *erm* but that's a story for a different day... In general, I feel more comfortable sharing about intrinsically safer systems. Nevertheless, the control theory of BLDC vs AC motor is very similar. I think it's fair to say that the control circuit & software will end up looking very similar (though distinctly different) from the DC link to the motor. The big thing for me is that if someone wants to control an AC drive with Modbus, there are OTS controllers that can be purchased for ($100-200 US) . With the price bar set so low, I think it's unlikely that my effort would add much value. With that said, my intention is to have a whole host of motors by the end: with and without position feedback, with and without multiphase sinusoidal modulation! Hopefully the higher-voltage, higher-power BLDCs scratch your AC modulation itch! Your list of awesome ideas has me thinking though... if EEforEveryone gets huge... it might be fun to rent out an EMC test house for a few days and test both intentionally good and bad designs! It's hard to discuss EMC without real test data. I'll definitely add your suggestions to my notesheet for this project... the planning isn't over, so I'm sure you'll see at least a few of these advanced concepts!

@@EEforEveryone I completly agree and support your choice, safety first! If it were not for the hazards, i would love to see the problem solving/engineering aspect of the mentioned AC system concepts, e.g active rectifier, just cause the added complexity is so interesting. But this series will probably scratch that itch! As you already said, alot of concepts are common between the systems. 👌
