The younger generation aren't interested. Back in the 70's and 80's bikes and motorbikes were a staple of daily life.
@Anonymouseys
@Anonymouseys 4 месяца назад
It's not that they are not interested, it's just no longer an easy and cheap route to personal transport. I'm 37 and have rode bikes all my life. Consequently, my sons are into bikes too and will likely also ride. The thing is, it's more difficult and fairly expensive to get a licence now. That was true for my generation too but insurance prices are even steeper now. In the 70s and 80s it was common for young people to ride because it was cheap and easy to get into. Nowadays it's more niche and people only jump through all the hoops to ride if they are passionate enough.

Geoff, you are missing one extremely important factor. Young people are not, and have not taken up motorcycling in the last decade or two due to government making it extremely expensive to get a motorcycle licence. When I was 16, ( when the earth was quite young ), I took my motorcycle test on a 250cc machine , passed, a fairly simple test and went on to a 650 and started having lots of fun. Still riding today, some 58 years later . Obtaining a full motorcycle licence now is a multi stage process costing lots of time and lots of money. Most youngsters see this and have jumped straight into cars. The result is that the motorcycling population is ageing. Go to any bike meet and you will see hardly anyone under 40, and most over 60. As they get older , fewer of them ride, resulting in fewer new bike purchases and more 2nd hand bikes available. Last year I was told by a motorcycle journalist that the average age of the purchaser of a new Honda motorcyle was 60.
@TheRealWindlePoons
@TheRealWindlePoons 4 месяца назад
Yes, tests used to be simple but still not too outrageous for the enthusiast. I have a wife & 2 adult kids: we all have car licences and three of us have full bike licences too. Seven tests taken, seven tests passed first time. Some sort of record?
@gomezgomezian3236
@gomezgomezian3236 4 месяца назад
Firstly, I am from Australia, so will not exactly be comparing 'apples with apples'. Way back in the 70's when I got my motorcycle licence, it was 'go and do a theory test, read an eye chart, and they give you your L-plates'. Then go ride! A month or more later, come back and do a 'test' ... where the examiner stands on the front steps of the Motor Registry and watches you ride up and down the street, do a U-turn, and then gives you a licence. You can then ride ANY bike available in the country. So easy. And cheap. But we also averaged 100 L and P (Provisional) riders killed each year (in just the state of NSW). So, a couple of decades later, they decided to address that by, firstly, implementing a 250cc max for L and P platers, and then by introducing a 'Pre-Learners' Course and a 'Pre-Licence' Course. So, how did this go? L and P rider deaths dropped from an average of 100 per year, to an average of 1. That's right, ONE! I'd call that pretty successful. A bit more hassle than it had been? Sure. But for 99 less killed? Probably worth it. (Oh, and more people were getting licences than had been doing so the couple of decades before, so it really wasn't turning people away from bikes). But, and this could be the clincher, the Govt heavily subsidised the cost of the two training courses (because it was done as an actual 'road safety measure', not the usual 'revenue raiser'). The Pre-learner course costs the equivalent of 55 Pound and the Pre-Licence course the equivalent of 120 Pound. If you cannot afford 200 Pound to get your licence, you probably can't afford to buy and run a bike.

Getting my knee down has given way to a 40mph bimble - enjoying the journey rather than nailing the next apex😂

A former colleague of mine worked as an engineer at Triumph and was a keen motorcyclist himself. He told me, that no matter how the Triumph researchers asked the question, 90% of the customer base said they would give up motorcycling altogether rather than ride an electric one. OK, so even if some of those people were to renage on that, its still an alarming statistic. When it comes to our passion with the combustion engine, the future is the past - we must fight against the efforts to force us from the roads, and look after the machines we do have, so we can serve ourselves and the next generation. Thanks again Geoff for the great work.

@garyc7464 4 месяца назад
I'd go with that. Battery bikes are shit to me. I'd rather give up.
@noggintube
@noggintube 4 месяца назад
The problem with electric bikes is the size of the vehicle - batteries are heavy and not very energy dense (compared to petrol), and the faster charging systems takes up room. Most eMotorbikes at the moment can't do greater than 100 miles (if even that) and take a good while to charge. This is a huge barrier as there's a physical limit to the batteries that can be installed. It means anything other than short commuting is out of the question, and at the prices of current eMotobikes, that makes them an incredibly expensive short range vehicle. Also, bikes have become more of a leisure activity over the years, and so this commuter range is pointless if it's not being used for commuting. I use my bike for commuting, but also for the odd tour in Europe. It's not feasible to do that on an electric, so no way I'd be looking at one either.

I just turned 65, have been riding off road since age 8, and on the street since age 16. I have owned somewhere around 5 motorcycles and have ridden around a million miles. You couldn't pay me enough to ride some battery powered abomination. I won't even ride a bike that isn't carbureted. Fortunately I have several. I have lived my whole life around the internal combustion engine, both cars and motorcycles. I spent my entire adult life as an internal combustion vehicle mechanic. Part of the issue with motorbikes now is theft. I was a motorbiker since 2013. My motorbike was stolen last July. All I hear from motorcyclists is theft, theft fears, attempted thefts and lack of police or government support to help combat it. After contacting the police for my theft, they were interested, gave me a crime # for the insurance claim and that was the last I heard - calling back “we have nothing and we’ve closed it already”. The chap at the insurance company I spoke to was excellent and he was very frustrated - he echoed exactly what I felt claiming he was a motorbiker himself. He said people can steal a £10 t shirt from Asda and get prosecuted but if someone steals a motorbike, potentially ruining an individuals livelihood there is a slap on the wrists assuming they even attempt to locate the thief which I believe without clear video evidence, they won’t. I haven’t bought a motorbike since mine was stolen, I just can’t deal with the stress of every night worrying of my motorbike is going to be targeted and I imagine that is exactly why many others aren’t going back to motorbikes. It would be interesting to see the theft statistics figures vs registrations, I bet it would be telling. Sticking to my 2002 MX5 as a consequence.

Agreed, the police and courts have let this spiral out of control, they couldn't give any more of a crap if they tried. As you say if someone robbed a post office of £500 they would likely get a meaningful sentence, but if 4 scrotes rob your bike at knifepoint, threatening to stab you they normally only get a light sentence ( if convicted at all ). The only time the police show any interest in motorcycle theft is if the stolen bike is used in an anti social way, or to commit a secondary crime like mobile phone theft

I’m 46, I grew up in the 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s… things were cheap and easy man. Easy to buy, easy to run and easy to fix. My mates and i had multiple bikes working part time jobs, easy. Things got real hard. Not only are bikes expensive to buy these days, like everything, it costs a fortune to maintain and you know the hardest thing I’m finding, is someone who is actually willing or wants to work on an old bike(s). Shops I call try to push me onto other places… it’s like nobody is interested unless it’s new and under warranty.

I remember an interview with Yamaha's chief designer, 20 odd years ago, he said one of the problems with their sport tourer lineup was that people still had a lot of affection for old FJ's and, old FJ's clocked up huge mileages, so selling an FJ rider a newer bike without offering much more in the way of enjoyment was a difficult prospect

As a biker since the early 80s i can tell you exactly why. In the 70s bikes turned from cheap go to work transport to a leisure pursuit. So many of us were apparently getting killed so the government introduced a learner cc limit of 125cc and changed the bike test. Making it increasingly hard to get a licence and you only need to look at the avg age of bikers in the 80s compared to now. The golden age of bikes as leisure was the 80s and 90s and thats because the kids are not getting into them because thier mums wont let them. And because a lot of us are getting older we dont really want to swap bikes for better ones as we like the ones we have. I have had mine since 2007 and its good enough for me.

As an avid motorcyclist and petrol head, there has been a growing issue in the MC community of a lack of new bikers. Partly due to an ever complex multi tests to get your license, in some parts of the country theft issues, anti mc policies of national and local governments. And the net 0 mandate affects MC as much as cars. Let alone MC HAVE become more expensive and complex due to things like Euro6. And we seem to have several generations that don’t seem to have much interest in MC. Probably not helped by the government’s anti MC stance for decades. Personally I brought a bmw r18 transcontinental touring MC a few years ago and probably going to keep her for life, I’ve done several tours on her know, and currently doing Isle of Skye tour.

Motorbikes are incredibly expensive and are often a luxury toy - an addition to owning a car This decline in motorcycle sales is the same (in my opinion) as the decline in all sales, most of us don’t have the disposable income and the manufacturers are taking the p*ss with the prices so most are looking after what they have. As a biker I see a few reasons motorcycles sales are down. The motorcycle licence is torturous and hard to understand for a novice who shows a little interest and is unnecessarily difficult to achieve or straight forward. Our road space is now taken up by cycle lanes and new road schemes reducing the advantages using a bike in town New Motorcycles are getting very expensive where once they were a cheap alternative to car ownership/mode of transport. Basically governments have taken all advantages of ownership away . And bikers don't want EV-Bikes. There are many other smaller reasons bike sales are down but that's the core reasons.

Hi Geoff, having just watched both of your videos, I think you have got this subject very wrong. I don’t believe people are still getting their dose of two wheeled fun anymore, instead I think they have changed their hobby to boating, yes, as you may as well be wet above and below, also if you pop down to the south coast, there are lots of free boats, some with life jackets thrown in, along with paddles and a small motor. Also for those inexperienced boaters the RNLI provide a fantastic rescue service, quite often resulting in a four star hotel stay with other inexperienced boaters while you recover. 😂😂

I ride a 1995 Moto Guzzi Cali 1100 and love it dearly ♥ I love the classic lines, but most of all the iconic Guzzi transverse v twin. Italian style, you really can't beat it. They fitted foot boards instead of pegs, with a toe/heel gearshift, just so they didn't scuff up their Gucci shoes 😂😂 I don't have any desire to ever change it, I see no need, unless it gets too heavy for me at some point in the future. To buy an electric motorbike 🤮, when I've already got a motorbike that'll last my lifetime, would be an ecologically unsound move.

Back in 1965 I had a BSA 500 twin with a sidecar frame with a flat board as body. (it was when you had to have parking lights on if parked in the road). The local police man told me to take off the side car frame and park it in the front garden, so as not to keep getting these lights stolen. Oh and to remove the "L" plates, claiming that ass long as I drove sensibly I would never be checked! For the 18 months I had it I never was questioned or stopped! The best bike for me would be the original Honda CB500 4 of the 1980's! I never owned one but my mate did & I rode it often!

The problem is the government added overheads for motorcycles, when motorcycles can ease traffic congestion and the help to mitigate the taxes needed to build extra lanes. Registration and duties should be excused if the motorcyclist already has a car that they pay registration and duties on.

Here in Helsinki the insurance is cheap but the parking on the street is expensive. Insurance for like VFR800 costs around 150 euros per year, but the permit to park on the street costs 720 euros per year. So parking costs roughly five times more than insurance. It just puts riders off. Same parking fee for a lorry and for a motorcycle, no differences.

Biker and car driver here. I went to buy a new motorbike a few months ago, I've had motorbikes for years of different capacities. Anyway, went to buy a new 400cc and I could not get insured, well I could but for £1800. Now the last bike I had was a 700 and that cost me £500pa. When I called the insurers they said 'the underwriters have changed their requirements' so when people say the insurance companies are mad, it's not actually the insurance companies, they are just the face, it's the under writers and what they deem. May be a good episode for you to do on the under writers of the insurance industry as let's say they are tied up in Bcorp or ESG, then insurance would become more prohibitive for petrol / diesel engines. Just mental.

Insurance is a factor when you own a car and a motorcycle. Although you can only operate one at a time you are still required to insure both vehicles. Even if you only pay to compulsory third party. Here our third party insurance is based on the drivers record, number of points etc. Yet we pay for every vehicle. As for bicycles, they pay neither registration, insurance or have any training. Instead they are financially over supported by all other vehicle owners and other tax payers. I suspect quite a few people have given up cycling because of crap roads. That and not being identifies as Jeremy Vine.

Talking about people trying to create an impression out on the road, I've been told about a company in London who will take your Chelsea tractor and spray mud on it, to make it look like they've been on an off road adventure. There are probably more than one that do this. Yet, the Chelsea tractors that do make it into the countryside wont move over on a narrow road for fear of getting them dirty. Wtf is wrong with some people ?

I can't speak for the UK but here in Australia, Just because people arent buying bicycles doesn't mean that people arent cycling. Bike sales had a huge spike in 2021. This led to a shortage in bikes so production ramped up and then people stopped buying bikes leaving a huge surplus. People are cycling more than ever, just not buying a new bike every year.

I sold my big Audi S6 Avant last year through lack of use for the previous year, after 6 years with a brilliant fun family car. I have reverted to type and own a big powerful motorcycle along with my company van. Adventure bikes are stupid, who wants to ride a £22,000 motorcycle off road with a 1200cc engine they weigh a ton. I love the new Super naked bikes, currently loving my KTM Superduke 1295 R. Already planning to add a Triumph Rocket III 2500cc next year. If I suddenly became wealthy I would love a TVR loony car with no traction control etc. German cars are great but way too safety concious. You have good taste in motorcycles Geoff, not the fastest but very good looking bikes and to be honest both those bikes you mentioned are quite fast enough

Possibly one of the reasons the motorcycling market is diminishing is because of the bizarre and totally ridiculous licencing scheme. It’s a bugger’s muddle to understand and dissuades younger riders from getting their licences. Then we have the image problem. Unlicensed, uninsured feral yoofs on noisy, unregistered dirt popping wheelies along our high streets are giving us a bad name. They are also buggering up the accident statistics. When lovely little Kade/Kane/Kieran etc. (8 convictions for TWOC, ASBO’s etc.) throws a double six riding a 70 into oncoming traffic, his very timely passing counts as another motorcycling accident. These numbers are putting people off as motorcycles are perceived to be even more dangerous than they are. Lastly, we have the practicality. Bikes are to easy to steal and there is often nowhere to keep your cycling gear at work. They can be part of the solution to the fashionable problems of pollution and congestion but nobody in authority can be bothered. My favourite bike? A Triumph T120 Bonneville. A green one. Just like the one in my garage.

I've been biking for just over 2 years. I ride an 06 CBF600n and have no reason to buy a new bike. New bikes are just too expensive and the test is just too expensive - £600 when I did it in 2022. I was fortunate to have a family that understands my desire to ride. If I lived anywhere other than the Highlands of Scotland, I wouldn't bother buying a bike given the rampant theft of bikes in the UK. Honestly thinking of moving my family to a rural state in the USA.
