Motorcycle Braking and Stopping Distances

Motorcycle Braking and Stopping Distances - I've been told that the average stopping distances for motorcycles has not really changed over a long period of time. One reason is the fact that we are generally limited by the downward force of 1G. Add aero such as in the case of MotoGP bikes at speed then the downward force can be increased, but that is not the case for the rest of us riding motorcycles on the street and on track.
Rather than regurgitate what I’ve heard about braking and stopping distances on motorcycles, I wanted to go out and get my own data and measure it for myself. So in this video that is exactly what we did. We did front brake only braking, rear brake only braking and combination front and rear brake stopping using a number of motorcycles
For your information, I used a portable range finder to do the measurements.
I had planned to also collect data on thumb brake stopping but ended up not doing it.

Great video and information 👍🏻 A good thing a bikes is they're narrow, twice I've been saved from a head on collision when a car was overtaking towards me, it would've ended badly if I was in my car...sometimes bikes save you !

Thats true, never thought about that until you mentioned it, the key is paying attention and not being distracted which you obviously practice mate, cheers

Excellent video, and I love your use of graphics. I know that on my 2020 RR the rear brakes are automatically applied when the front brake is used (although I think this is reduced to something like 10% in Race Pro modes). Not sure if your RR has the same setup?

no definitely not on mine mate, they're seperate. Not sure exactly what the new bikes do but I know they would be utilising the rear lift detection as part of the braking system. Cheers mate

Hey mate. Thanks for video. There is a slight flaw that I want to point out; also an explanation of how the GS was better in the test than the RR In respect to cars for which we have a lot of data, bigger brakes (and better brakes) do not give you better stopping power over OEM. They only prevent brakes from fading. This is clearly demonstrated by trying to stop during wet conditions. Where braking distance is actually increased even though rotor efficiency is higher due to lower rotor temperatures. Here is a video explaining the physics in detail ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ql9eYh31kTw.htmlsi=L7KKHRnRf_JYvHil - with the invention of Aero in motorcycles we can actually create a scenario where we can maximise the braking effects above 1G but alas that’s a hypothetical MotoGP scenario rather than for us mere mortals

thanks mate, appreciate the information, one thing we have been discussing here is the fact that the GS has that anti dive front end which we believe contributes to it being able to use more of the rear brake at the same time as the front. And yep, I totally agree with the better brakes means less fade. Cheers
