I've made a new video about my navigation setup: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mTu5PtbjlBk.html

Hello Johannes, I downloaded the app and it’s awesome and I thank you for this cool video. But wondering can we just use the offline maps that I downloaded from the map manager in the app? I tried it, but just couldn’t manage to submit a destination point, thus couldn’t create a route. Appreciated in advance

Osmand gives you the same level of details in its maps, especially for off-road riding. Every little single track path can be shown. You just need to select the right profile in Maps Settings. You can configure any number of profiles that suits any specific situation.

Thanks, I'm building and configuring my NAV now. Got the TriplTek 8" 1200 nits. No mounting hardware on the market for my GSA1200, so I'm 3d printing one. Was on VERY ruff trails yesterday as a test. My design needs more work, but that the fun.

Excellent information Johannes! I am myself wondering if I should go and use a Zumo XT or try a setup like yours. I will be doing about 40% off-road here in North America, and hopefully one day along the TET. My main concerns would be: > can you easily see the map on the screen while riding, as phone screens can reflect the sun depending on the angle of light? > how well does the the touchscreen work with gloves on? > is there a navigation feature on one of these apps (giving you directions as you ride), or simply an electronic version of a map? > impact of vibrations and rain/water

Hello there Florian, thanks a lot for watching. I personally don't struggle with being able to see the screen, the mobile screen is bright and easy to read. When it comes to gloves I really can't say, my gloves aren't made to be screen compatible, and when I do have to navigate on the screen, I usually stop and take my glove off. Newer mobile phones are very good with gloves I've heard, so I'm sure this isn't an issue. The phone I use is an old, budget Samsung that I got for free. There are both actually, and that is the beauty with a setup like this vs a GPS, because it is so easy to modify and adapt. A perfect example is that I'm heading to an event in Sweden in two weeks, and they offer rally road book courses. If I went the "GPS route", I couldn't use that device to do the rally riding, but with a phone it's just an app that I have to download. So if I just need directions, I have an app that does that well, if I want a very detailed map (much more detailed than a GPS map), I have an app for that as well. Vibration will kill most image stabilization features on modern phones, that's why I don't use my cellphone, but a second mobile device. Rain is the biggest downside to my setup, as the USB socket isn't waterproof, and neither is the phone. This is easily fixed by buying a waterproof phone, but in this aspect a GPS device is clearly the best option. I was close to buying a GPS device because they are rock solid and easy to use, but since I was given this phone for free I decided to try this approach first, and after I've used it for some time now, I'm not going to buy a GPS in the future. I will most likely splash out on a waterproof tablet (like the Carpe Iter) when the time is right. As of now the old Samsung is serving me well. I hope this was helpful Florian, best of luck with your adventures and if you ever need any help feel free to ask 😊

@@JohannesDalenMC thanks for your detailed reply - it's much appreciated Johannes! I will also try the phone & app option. My current Samsung phone (S8) is old enough but not too old - it is IP68 (waterproof) so I think it will be a good try, as I will have to buy a new phone sometime soon, meaning I can dedicate the "old" phone to be my navigation device without fear of breaking the image stabilizer (although I do have a dampening device with my QuadLock system). Enjoy your rides and stay safe :)

very good video!!! I would like to know how you make your routes. Is it possible to do it directly on the smartphone and how Or should it be prepared on a computer and then transferred to the smartphone. If you have links/videos I would be grateful if you could provide them. Thanks in advance

Very good job Johannes! Is it possible to improve this setup by integrating a camera to the back for rear view? As you may know, the latest trucks have been shifted from side mirrors to outside cameras and inside screens which is basicly operating as mirrors.
@JohannesDalenMC
@JohannesDalenMC 2 года назад
Thank you! So you’re basically talking about a camera facing the rear with a screen showing it on the dash? Never heard about that on a motorcycle before, but it does make sense safety wise - good thinking. The mirrors do a good job in my opinion, but they can always be improved.

I have seen the Nomad video Robert has done, but it was interesting to hear your views on the mapping apps I been using OsmAnd in conjunction with my Garmin Montana GPS but have been thinking about a larger display using the DriveMode app on a tablet using the Bluetooth controller also from Thork Racing, would be interesting to see/ hear if you are still using the Android device. Thanks for sharing
@JohannesDalenMC

I am still using the same setup and I’m still very happy with it. The only drawback is that my phone is not waterproof, neither is the usb port and cable. If I had the money I would buy the Carpe Iter and Thork racing BT controller, but it’s too expensive. Perhaps I’ll buy one in the future, and if I do I will report back 🙂 Thanks for watching Peter!

doesn't the phone jostle about too much offroad with your RAM mount?
@JohannesDalenMC
@JohannesDalenMC 2 года назад
It has worked really well and the phone has never fallen off. If this didn't work for offroad riding it wouldn't have been such a popular option in my opinion. Thanks for your question!

The only weak point I see is with usage in the rain. I would need a touch-lock utility. If the CARPE remotes were able to program a button to enable/disable touch screen, this would be perfect.
@JohannesDalenMC
@JohannesDalenMC 2 года назад
I assume that can be fixed - the Carpe with controllers is the ultimate setup!
