my mirror's ball joint isn't quite sticky enough and makes my mirror move around at higher speeds. instead of pencil to loosen it up, could I use an eraser to make it more stiff?

Great tip, my 03 DL1000's ignition switch was pretty bad, just figured it was worn out and I would need to replace it. Now it's way better, thanks!

Skeptical, but desperate, I first removed the WD-40 build-up with isopropyl alcohol (watched this vid too late!), then followed this advice. It worked like a charm! Thanks!!

I also made the mistake of WD40 - did you apply the alcohol in the same way that you did the WD40? How did you actually remove it?

@philo8040 so i didnt get to do mine. It seems like its getting covered by warranty soo we'll see if it is next week. But i recommend stripping down to your ignition as much as you can or maybe even remove it. But even if you dont, i think you should be fine. Get an actual can of brake clean, dont use anything else. Brake clean has much less of a chance of mussing up your paint than other chemicals. Spray brake clean with a nozzle down the ignition barrel and blast it with some compressed air. Do that a few times and hopefully you should be golden. Lemme know how it goes!!

OMG, so went to go to work this morning (-2c) I couldn`t move the key in the lock (2010 Suzuki Gladius), tired wiggling it for like 20 mins, no joy, I thought it had frozen or something, called work to WFH, looked on you tube, saw this, tried it & it WORKED! thanks, so helpful

Huh. I've been using the pencil graphite trick for lubing my guitars' nut and saddles for years- never thought to do the same for an ignition barrel! I'll give this one a go.

Just like we use on guitar nuts to make the strings slide when you tune them. So that they basically respond perfectly to even the slightest turn in the tuning peg and dont get stuck.

great tip, i'm guilty of using spray lube in locks before and it doesn't last too long, plus the key gets greasy. any tips on freeing up brake rotor buttons?

so my sx650 doesnt have issues inserting the key, but it hangs up sometimes when i turn it on. idont think its ever done it when i go to turn it off though. would this work for that issue as well?

Just fixed my problem bike wasn't turning on thought it was my battery when I turned the key did graphite and it fixed it. I got caught in the rain for a few hours and the next day I turned my key nothing I was about to take the ignition apart thought it was loose or gummed up.

I have an issue. I usually lock my handle bars as I have no garage. Last night after a ride, I locked my handlebars. Today my handlebars unlock, but the ignition won't pop up to allow the key to turn to the off nor on position. Never had an issue before this. What can I do?

damn i had sticky ignition and was looking for such video and couldn't find it so i decided to use isopropyl alcohol a bit into ignition and it works smoothly now i just did it today and now finding this video... life lol

I3RV you probably washed away some junk, but now it is totally lubricant free. You should use this pencil graphite tip still to lubricate the lock afterwards.

this shit fucking works!!! did this method (used mechanical pencil lead). shaved 5 sticks of lead on a paper plate (had a mountain of pencil lead powder). poured the lead powder into the ignition key-hole and jiggled the key around for 30 secs and boooooom, key turned to the on position!!! THANKS SO MUCH MC man!

This didn't work for my R1. It's been outside and has high mileage so I'm guessing this is the issue. My question is would the dry lube be more efficacious and help or would it be a different unrelated problem?

I believe certain Yamaha models have ignition switch problems including FJR 1300 06 to 09 recalled not surprised if the R1 is also in this category

Hey Ari, I wanted to buy a motul chain lube *paste* but it isn't available where I live (even online), a motorcycle parts shopkeeper whom I enquired about for the paste said that I could try mixing graphite powder with lubricating grease and apply it to the chain. He said he worked as an engineer on a ship and this is what they'd do to lubricate the gears. Do you think this'll work?
