My old helmet had a quick release. I just purchased an expensive itallian helmet made by AGV and was first surprised that it had a d ring. I thought.... is this expensive helmet just offering less quality? When i watched this video im now convinced that i made the right choice and quality does not come cheap. Thank you for the effort made in your video. Now i feel it was money well spent.👍

I have also set up a different ratcheting style clasp for testing but have not made the video yet. This is the style used by Shoei and LS2. I think it may fare better in the test though its possible it will fail in the same way.

Hey, a great review and thanks for taking the time and effort to make it. I was considering purchasing those exact same D ring replacement units from Amazon but now I will do some further research for a more sturdy make of quick release rachet bucket. Oh, and a very BIG thumbs up. cheers.

This one is much better. www.amazon.com/dp/B08PB89Q2P/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_RW1R7X8GJQ9DRYSWBD97?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Great vid, thanks. I wonder how a ratchet from a brand name helmet like Shoei would fair in competition 🤔

no crash would pull the strap like that, u may be right about a weak point like if the helet caught a fence link or guardrail, it could help, then again they use d rings which wont break away so who knows i feel these will be good enough to keep the helmet on in wind or as u roll on the ground....ok for sxs use too

Excellent video. Thank you. As you say 'something should break before your head does', or your neck does, is a very important consideration. Maybe you could try hanging upside down, attach the weight to your neck using the quick release strap, do the weight drop test and see what breaks first, the strap or your neck. If your neck breaks first the quick release strap is probably strong enough (for those of you who might think I'm being serious ... this was a joke)

Thank you so much for testing this! I made sure to get a MIPS helmet for my child and was about to put this quick release on.

There are quality metal ones on Amazon, furthermore you don't have to cut d rings off and sew on. That test would have ripped your head off, how u plan on crashing

Very interesting video. It's possible that the reason why it keeps failing is because it is being pulled straight. Whereas if it were properly placed under your chin, it would never pull in such a manner because it would have a slight curve.

That is a good observation. I wanted to be able to test the latch consistently and without building a much more elaborate rig the straight inline pull was the best I could do. It’s important to not though, the double D ring that the ratchet is intended to replace passed the test repeatedly. I would want whatever is intended to replace the D rings to be as strong as the D rings. It’s been a while since I posted this and I have learned more about helmets and retention devices since. As think I mentioned in the video, the helmet chinstrap is designed to separate from the helmet under extreme loading, 700 kilos I think. The idea is that if the helmet retention is too strong, it’s going to take you head with it in extreme circumstances. I suppose the idea is that while we don’t want the helmet coming off too easily, having it take your head with it is worse. I stand by the result in so far as I would not use that particular ratchet closure in a motorcycle helmet.

One never has to take the straps out of the d rings on a double d ring equipped helmet. You can loosen and tighten the strap without ever taking it out of the d rings. And FortNine here on RU-vid also demonstrated that quick release ratchet straps fail long before double d ring straps do.

Good video. D-ring pattern buckles are inherently strong due to the design, as long as application specific, quality components are used. It may not be a plug-n-play, but look at quality buckles (Berry compliant for US MIL, not that it matters for a MC helmet), from ITW Nexus. The 1 inch ITW Surfacemount may workout well. ITW buckles are all too common for US Gov contracts. FYI I'm not a fan of D-rings for my HJC RPHA 11.

Thanks for a very interesting video Saw these on Amazon and was dubious about the price versus safety and now I know the answer, thanks Ordered a ryde wear quick release buckle and hopeful that it works £52 UK, Amazon 2022

I love the ruroc atlas 2 chinstrap. Strong magnet. Holds together very well. You should test one of those
