As the bones begin to creek and the joints begin to ache, when should we tell ourselves it's time to stop riding motorcycles? In this video, I will explain how we can keep riding well into our 90's. Hey HDR! I’ll be 70 in July and still putting down around 10,000 miles a year with no end in sight. I figure that when the time comes to hang it up…I will know. Until then I just ignore the entire family that keeps telling me I’m too old!! 😂😂

I knew a guy who rode 2 wheels until he was 80. He felt like his legs were not strong enough to pick up the bike off the kickstand. He traded his 2 wheeler for a trike. He rode for another 6 years on the trike. Then, his health went down hill. He stopped riding only because he was in and out of the hospital that year and eventually passed away that same year. I’d say he rode up to within 3 months of his passing. I hope I can do that. I have another friend who dropped his bike a couple of times at the age of 65. When he did that, he took a variety of tests to see why he was getting weaker or losing his balance easily. After the tests and talking with his wife and doctor, he hung it up. Cold turkey. They both knew. They both took a different route years apart. It was the best route for each.

I hope to not have to hang it up any time soon. I ride with guys in their 70s and 80s. I thinks it's a matter of being physically able to still ride. As you noted, once 2 wheels is too much to handle, there is always 3 wheels to keep you on the breeze. Ride safe and enjoy. 👊✌️👍

I'm going to be 72 and I still ride every chance I get. I try to keep it mellow and limit it to 40° below that is a bit much with the wind chill so long rides are out of the question , I'm no hero. Ride safe brother.

While watching this video I was thinking what a great topic!...I came to the same conclusion as you...we as riders need to be honest to ourselves....getting older doesn't mean we have to stop riding....but if you feel something is not right...mentally or physically...be honest.. hang up the gloves...enjoy life and family!! I’m 75, my reaction time is good, & still enjoying riding my touring bike. Not a true ‘iron butt’ these days, I most enjoy cruising the foothills near my home w/some moderate twisty exercise. However, I’m witnessing how 4-wheelers are driving faster & more carelessly & preoccupied than ever before and I’m questioning just how long I’ll feel in control of my own fate.

I’m 79 riding a 2020 Triumph T120 and have wondered about this question a bit more now than in the past. I bought my first bike in 1964 and have had 25 since then and I think giving up riding might feel too ‘final’! Riding still feels exhilarating and I try to be careful but a good throttle twist once in a while still feels good. I guess I’ll have to wait till I get old to decide when to quit😉

I blew through 75 a year or so ago, and it was time to do what I figured I wanted -- sold the Evo-Ultra (great bike, just too many gadgets for my geriatric taste) and eventually got a more basic twinkie softail -- lots of bling, but feels a couple of hundred pounds more maneuverable... but the real question... not every day feels like a truly balanced day -- those are cage days (daze ???). But the good days are riding days -- The Lord willing, I'm hoping for many more -- albeit, slower and more sane than in my misspent youth...

I'm 74, and I just bought a pre-owned Ultra Limited. I had sold my 2010 Ultra Classic 3 years ago, and I wanted to get back into riding. My knees aren't the greatest, but they'll get better with a little exercise. Think it over before you part with your bike.

Your Ultimate answer was the Correct one . When you no longer feel Safe , whether through diminishing physicality or Lowered Attention ability , or whatever . Can-Am product can be an Excellent alternative if it is purely a Physical problem but Mentally are still Alert . Good Video . 64 y/o Aussie here .

The bridge you went Under look like a railroad bridge to me I hope you do not get your daughter to cross it.😂😂😆😆😉😉. I am 73 years old still riding and loving it as much as ever. I live in Indiana so we have winter. On October 21st I done something I have never did before, I winterized my bike. On October 25th I got my right knee replaced. And am scheduled to get the left one replaced. Buy Spring I should be ready to rip. No trike for me. I have rode new trikes They are all hard to turn. They need power steering.😂😆 There is a guy on RU-vid that always says ride your own ride. 👍👍😆 Same goes for when you ride it and how many miles you put on. You do you!!! The guys that bragged about how many miles they put on and want to knock you for not riding that much are usually just full of themself. Happy New Year to you and your family. Be careful, ride safe.

Great subject HDR. I went through this delema a yr ago. I was unstable on 2 wheels and thought maybe it was time. Then I decided nope not yet found myself a Tri Glide and am still in the wind. Had some great trips on the Tri Glide and not worried about dropping the bike. Keep bringing us great content, really enjoy you, broncoride and bodean52.

Once in a while I contemplate that too. I just started riding 3 years ago…I’m one of the younger ladies in our riding groups (at 50😂), and the rest of the ladies prove I’ve got at least another 20 years in me!

I'm almost 70, retired and ride a Gen3 KLR650, but I am 6'1. I love riding and work out with weights and bicycle hard. Hopefully that'll keep me in the saddle a few more years. Enjoyed your well thought out and made video. From deep south texas, ride safe brother!

At 67 I finally went to a trike. Old knees and my big RG limited as just too heavy at cambered stop lights 2 up. It was not fun anymore. So I went to a triglide and I wish I had years ago . Same features as a street glide and RG limited. It is not a speed demon in the twisties , but with legends all around it holds its own for a trike.

a friend of mine hung it up reluctantly. He had a knee surgery that never really went well. On top of other medical issues, and after another friend helped him get to an assisted living home he finally gave it up. I know it was hard for him. He was one of the most dedicated riders Ive ever met. He did the right thing for himself and other people on the road.

Wife went to 3 when the granddaughter wanted to ride and she thought it would be safer on 3. The new tri-glide is a world away from a conversion. Body is probably the #1 cause. We are discussing doing a mt. Rushmore/ needles hwy area.

I'm 78...soon 79. I've been riding since I was 14. I think about it... wonder when I should stop but it isn't now. Rode the dragon last year and may again this spring. I just don't see stopping now. I feel fine on the bike, but I do critique my riding every time I get on it.

Very good point and something to think about when the time comes. At 63 just completed 5000 kilometres in 14 days and it was amazing. The point is that I did it maybe not as fast but it was the best confidence building experience I have done in a while. This was all done on a 22 ST For me as long as you enjoy the ride and keep relatively healthy just keep on going. From Australia and cheers

Iam hoping to follow in my Dad's foorsteps when it comes to Ridin...He toured and rode almost everyday until his 80th Bday...Then went to a lighter Bike and just rode locally...He passed at 85...

At 60 I am still laying down bout 10k a year on the FJR. I plan on getting smaller and lighter bikes as I get older. already looking at super meteor 650 for a second bike. Hell as long as i can hold up a supermoto or even a little 125 I will be riding. Started riding minis at 10. I would be fine checking out on my bike. hopefully not for another 20 or 30 years. 😎🏍👍

I’m 58 and have many aches and pains in general, although I don’t appear to have any issues wrangling my Street Glide Special. If and when that becomes an issue, I’ll seek medical assistance or get a trike! 😉✌️

I am in a congested area too. So I ride on sunday mornings when everyone is either in church or in bed. The roads are empty. I avoid Friday and Saturday nights when more of the drunks are out. During the week on back roads are not bad either but I am retired so I can go when I want.

When the joy stops...seems all I do anymore is avoid stupid, careless cagers on phones or blaring music... Applying makeup... The fun and freedom is fading... Also have a number of health issues. Took a couple years off, but when Spring hit and I hear the roar, I cannot stop

I am 76 (very close to 77). Age shouldn’t be the main reason for hanging it up. Physically things can prevent you from riding at any age. How do you feel mentally; do you still get excited when you ride, do you think about riding when the sun is out? Ride as long as you desire! You’ll know when it’s time!

For me, it’s not so much a question of my reaction time & ability to ride as the increasing dangers of inattentive, faster & more careless car & truck drivers who show a disregard for all others on the road, the most vulnerable being us bikers.

50 years and over 1 mil miles and i'm still going. I will say I ride less street then I did in yrs past as I moved on to just riding in the woods and DS and my bigger ADV bikes. I still enjoy riding the say way but it's a bit safer with a lot more fun and I'm getting to see a new side on the US then I seen just riding street.. Before you give up just slow it down and change it up a bit....

I'm 70 years old and I can still ride a bike and I can pick it up off the ground what I don't want to do is get injured and then I'm going to be riding around in a wheelchair or worse laying in a bed getting killed is the least of your problems make sure you got plenty of money and somebody to take care of you and keep riding otherwise you're not very wise I see people on motorcycle accidents get run over by cars here in Central Florida almost everyday

I am 76 and haven't rode in 15y. Been wanting to get back on a bike but decided to do something a little different. I purchased a 2022 Suzuki Hayabusa.😮 I never rode a sport bike and my wife keeps telling me NOT to get on that Dam motorcycle or i was going to kill myself!! So what happened. I was building a trailer for the bike and fell and broke my hip. And this was before i had a chance to trailer it to a parking lot and start some low speed practicing. But i am healing and walking on a cane and getting ready to RIDE. I guess i would rather die Living than live dyeing

I think it's not necessarily an age thing. A lot of riders finish after their first fatal accident.

At 71i was riding in Bakersfield cal just watching the sky I forgot where I was and ran off a cliff,22 fractions died three times two months later woke up in hospital broke my jaw glad God was with me and my youngest son riding with me are nobody would have found me so alli can say is praising Jesus Christ still have trouble walking 🚶‍♀️I still want to ride RKS131 2020 I started riding in 1967 don’t know when to stop 🛑all so I knocked out 5 teeth broken three teeth need pulling so I don’t know
