In this video I teach you a few common symptons of bad bearings and also a few tests you can do yourself to make sure your's are OK.
So many people spending money on upgrades, exahusts, suspensions...and no one ever talks about bearings!
On ADV/Offroad bikes bearings can be quite a frequent problem that may ruin your riding experience (even perhaps your face if you let the problem drag for too long :D). Bearings are the silent pleasure killer... when they are not OK your bike will feel weird, wont tract the ground straight, it will have noises and it won't feel solid... believe me, I know!

The first thing you do when you get a new used adv bike is to disassemble the wheel bearings and pack as much grease into the old rusted shot bearings as possible! :) Thanks for your videos, I think you've surpassed f9 as they have tried too hard to be top gear and forgot how to provide useful info.

@@OFFroadOFFcourse Ryan F9 has a whole lot of camera and a dedicated pro videographer, so I agree to your disagreement, lol. But damn, been a long time YT didn't suggest me one of your videos even if I watched all of them when I discovered your channel, and you're "only" 10k ? I would recommand RU-vid to give you 20k more subscribers at the very least!

Tech tip, Take the new bearing and pop the seal off and clean out the factory junk grease. Then pack with quality grease and reseal it. To remove the seal use a small pick and pry it the inner race, the seal will pop right off.

I just came in from the garage where I have been replacing my chain & sprockets so took the opportunity to remove the swing arm and suspension linkage to re grease, I’m glad I took that opportunity as there was very little grease in them! 👍

I had a friend who told me his 450 MX Bike makes weird noises and rolls badly when pushed onto the trailer. Upon inspection we detected that the rear wheel bearing was completely gone and the hub was spinning on the axle with some broken up pieces of bearing inbetween, that were all completely rounded. The bearing seat was about 5mm oversize already and no shoulder was visible anymore. Even in that condition the bike was still ridable, which impresses me to this day. Pro tip to prevent this: When you crash, push and pull against your wheels and tell your friends that you only put the bike on the side to check bearing conditions.

I know what you mean! Sometime you look at a bearing (all rusted and missing balls/needles) and you think how is it possible that the bike had only "Mild symptons". I wonder how many bikes ride around with broken bearings all their lives :o
@mattyp80

With the steering head bearing test, it will only test the lower bearing! I recently had to replace my head bearings on my KTM 990 SMT as i felt an odd sensation when turning into a corner! I used that test with the front wheel off the ground but the weight is taken off the upper when you do! Turned out the lower bearing was fine but the upper was rusted up and gnarly where someone had presumably pointed a pressure washer at it!
@OFFroadOFFcourse
@OFFroadOFFcourse 2 года назад
Oh, what you say makes sense! Thanks for pointing that out! Do you know how to test the other bearing?
@mattyp80
@mattyp80 2 года назад
@@OFFroadOFFcourse in short, no! What I was feeling was as I turned into a sharpish bend (it would be exaggerated at slower speeds) the steering seemed to stick then it would drop suddenly, which, as you can imagine, is a little unsettling! But as I said, I put it up on the centre stand and had someone lean on the back and turned the steering and it felt fine🤔
@OFFroadOFFcourse
@OFFroadOFFcourse 2 года назад
@@mattyp80 that sounds like what would happen you get those "notches" on the steering bearing.. but maybe yours was on the bottom one instead of the top (or vice versa). Im very glad you pointed that out, i would never remember that one. Maybe if you thighten the head nut a bit more than its supposed to you can feel both bearings when the front wheel is up though :o

Very interesting topic as always! Was just about to reach out to the dual-sport community with questions about worn steering head stem bearing and other bearings on used / newer used dualsports affect the stability on/offroad or if instability at higher speeds on freeway is model related? Follow-up questions are whether "fork brace" that were common in the 60's / 70's, steering dampers e.g Scotts , revolving fork / update springs and lower linkage on a dual sport would make these bikes more stable on highways at speeds around 110-120kmh aka 68.4-75mph? Feel free to contribute with experience and knowledge in the field. Spoke tension, rim locks, rim straight without flat spots, tire depth and tire pressure, forks - sign of leaking are also important to continuously check. Has recently tested Honda Crf300L and Crf450L, Suzuki DRZ400 and DR650, Husqvarna 701 Enduro, KTM 690 Enduro, Honda XR650R, XR650L and CRF450HM. Yamaha XT660R. These are personal preferences, but the ones that were most stable on the highway were the Husqvarna 701 Enduro, which is actually based on a motard, followed by the Honda CRF450L and Suzuki DR650. However, we still have these bikes to test out the KTM 500 Exc, Husqvarna Fe501s, Gas Gas Es 700 Enduro and retro bikes Honda XR600R, Yamaha XT600E and TT600RE. KTM 490 Enduro with parallel-twin engine similar design to the 790 Adventure R’s engine are delayed until 2023..

Why would new bearings get damaged? Just got lyndall wheels (bearings come installed by them) less than 500miles on it and they are messed up. Factory or usage damage?

Hii, i bought a new honda 350cc bike a month ago and im hearing metallic noises(kee kee kee) while riding my bike or moving it on land with engine off. the sound got increased now a days while riding for more than an hour. its so weird that even after 1st servicing it still continues. i tried keeping it on main stand of my bike and given a trottle, then theirs no noise from the wheel but moving it on land i can hear it. could you pls guide me what to do....

Mileage doesn't seem to matter either. I bought a used bike with under 5k miles on it. Steering bearing were disintegrated. Just went ahead and replaced wheel and swingarm bearings as well. Diogo, have you ever made any channel stickers? Yours is the one sticker I would put on my bike.

I really need help! I just got a 2020 crf250r the bike runs great but I have 1 problem. When my bike is decelerating it makes a friction, whirring, skimming noise. Like something is spinning and rubbing on something. The sound only happens when I let off the throttle and goes away when I pull in the clutch. It doesn't happen in neutral its only on deceleration when I'm in gear. I've asked around the internet, and have everyone baffled. If you want to hear the sound it's in the only video in my channel. Everyone says it seems like it's an easy fix but can't figure where it's coming from im guessing clutch or transmission possibly
@OFFroadOFFcourse
@OFFroadOFFcourse Год назад
Hey man, sorry but I have no idea what that could be, I am not familiar with the bike. Does it have slipping clutch? Anyway, if I had to guess, it has something to do with the slipping clutch (if it even has one) or the clutch basket. Why don't you take it to a propper mechanic who can run some tests?

Pretty long time since the xt was last seen. Traded in favor of lighter suzuki? I noticed the detail in the logo... Gator head.

@OFFroadOFFcourse 2 года назад
No the XT is still in my heart (and garage!) I just had to replace the rear wheel bearing so it was unavailable (and i dont like to shoot videos in my garage because of the echo). The gator head is an "homage" to my old company Trailout. The logo was a similar gator on a motorcycle in a sort of "jurassic park" vibe :D

Wheel bearings are not very expensive. Should be checked according to manual specs. I experience the same when buying a used dual-sport bike. Seller claims that it is "in good shape" But.. he forgot about bearings..
