Motorized Functional Differential Gear System 

It's not the "standard" profile, but is was done with a carefully assembled machine that was calibrated using Dave Durrant's instructions (which come down to making sure that it is putting out the right amount of plastic). The machine has an MK6+ stepper extruder with the stock 0.4mm nozzle. The profile had a 1.4mm layer height and 1.5w/t. the result was a slow print but with nice resolution.

No. The differential is located between the output of the transmission and the drive wheels. In this model the engine runs at a constant speed. The purpose of the differential is to allow the two wheels to turn at different rates when the car is turning. Consider a Mini Cooper with a turning circle of 35.2 ft and wheel track of 4.8 ft. When making a complete circle the outside wheel goes 110 ft while the inside wheel only goes 80 ft. Without a differential one of the wheels would have to slip.

There is some assembly, involving a total of 15 M3x12 socket head screws. The holes were sized such that the M3 screws can be self-tapping, but I used an M3 tap first to make the assembly easier. There are no snap fits. It's obviously not as close a tolerance as a precision machined metal differential with bearings, but ABS is fairly self-lubricating and it generates enough torque to flip itself over as you can see in the video. I built it as a cool desktop toy and 3D printing demonstration.

so does the differential always turn when the car is on? even in neutral? and if so, how do the axles not spin all the time then?

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why most people who live in a winter climate HATE open differentials. With this basic setup, the wheel with the least traction is given all of the power.
