Finally posting the Motorola Astro Spectra two-way radio field test. It's been requested I review the radio after using it in a few other videos. The Astro Spectra is a 40 watt UHF two-way radio. 40 watts may not seem like a lot of power but has reached distances as far as 40 miles (so far). It has analog and digital (P25) capabilities.
As an added bonus, I tested the Motorola XTS3000 two-way radio with the Spectra and got jaw dropping results. Let me know if you have UHF P25 in the Phoenix area so we can test our radios out!

F7E is the "CSQ" NAC for P25.

Radio propagation is very strange in the PHX area. I'm down in Queen creek and one moment, I can hit an analog ham White Tanks repeater on 5 watts, then later in the day, I can't hit it, even with 40 watts. Do you find that you get better range with P25 over analog? Also, when using P25, are you on simplex? Just found your channel a couple weeks ago. Really liking the content!

@jevasjunkbox I've had both analog and P25 work better at different times. At times were I expected P25 to work better, analog ended up doing better. I'm usually running simplex for P25. Quantar in the future! Thanks for the feedback! Let me know if you are running P25. I plan to hit up South Mountain and see who can hear me. 🤙

Great video. I’m wondering can this type of radio work on ham bands? Like 2m with repeater’s or simplex? I’m on the west side near white tanks. I like the all in one in the head unit. I myself have a jeep and know what you mean with no room to mount anything. Thank for any info.

@DJK9RAA there is a VHF version that I'm sure is in that range. This one is a 450-520 but I can squeeze in 446 (the lowest). I've hit repeaters with it but mainly run simplex.

I've really been enjoying your videos. I'm a fan of Motorola, having been a Nextel user back in the day. Unfortunately I don't own a Motorola public safety radio yet, but I will someday. I'm tired of using Baofengs. So, I follow your channel very closely, and your videos are both informative and detailed. Your setup in your Jeep is really cool. I like the fact that only the control head is visible, and such good range you got with it. I do have a couple of questions for you. Are the old portable Motorola Sabers and Astro Sabers able to talk to the XTS line while using digital P25? The sabers are very old so I'm kind of confused as to whether or not they are phase I or phase II and are they all compatible with each other. I just want to be able to communicate between an old Saber and an XTS in digital mode. I'd like to be able to mix and match if possible. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

@BlueInMyBlood9005 Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. As far as the Saber, they can actually mesh communicate. The original Sabers can talk to the newer Sabers and XTS using analog. The Astro Saber can communicate with the XTS using P25. I will put together a video explaining this. Thank you for the idea!

Thank you for clearing that up, it definitely helped a lot. Motorola is so confusing. A video would be awesome. Great channel 👍
