I am so incredibly grateful to you for this video. I've already broken and replaced the screen on my G5+ twice, and recently upgraded to the Z4. Within 2 hours of UPS delivering my Z4, I dropped it about 2 feet onto a smooth concrete floor. Just like an open-faced PB&J, it landed face down. Shattered. I ordered a $69 replacement screen from AliExpress and am waiting for it to arrive. Fortunately, I only paid $120 for the phone on a BestBuy promo through Verizon. When it shattered, I just ordered another one for $120... When the screen gets in, I'll have a second Z4 and will give one to the wifey.
I just a few days ago flipped my kayak in the water, had this phone in my pocket and it worked fine until about 12 hours later and all of a sudden I was on it and my screen turned green started flickering then went right out. I put it in rice for two days and turned it in. It worked perfectly fine for about 30 mins then did the exact same thing. I feel I need to take it apart and completely dry every component inside it. I already have a new phone on order cause I never. Thought it would turn back on after the first green screen popped up. However since I have a new phone coming I’m determined to completely strip this dry it out and put it back together. This stop motion helped a lot. It’s basically a video compared to how many frames you fit in. It’s really informative and helped me a lot. Thank you!! I’ll reply to this comment as soon as I open it up. I’m also wondering if there is a water damage indicator on the inside as it clearly will hav gone off. Usually it’s a white dot that turns red upon water damage. But I’m wondering if that’s the case for this phone. Please let me know!!
Hi yes there is water damage indicators on the inside, they are white stripes with red x's on them. Also always keep in mind, its best to open and completely dry a phone if it gets in water before attempting to power it on again to prevent shorting the board or other components. Most likely you're board is rendered useless at this point or your display but you can still try taking it apart and brushing off corrosion from the chips and resistors and connectors with a tooth brush or something similar. Glad the video is able to help :)
The detail and the production of your videos is incredible! I'll be subscribing and following any time I need to disassemble/reassemble a phone that you've documented. Thanks a lot!
It probably took you longer than usual to make this stop motion version than a regular video. Reminds me of a 90's science video for high schoolers. Great job!
I thought the z4 had the gorilla glass, as soon as it fell out of my coat pocket leaving over, screen scattered and I was like wtf? My turbo 2 man that thing took a beating so that's why I went with Motorola again but I digress thanks for the video awesome job!
Thanks, yea the turbo 2 and other moto phones with shatterproof displays were good, I am still using my Z2 force because of the shatterproof display. Hoping still that they will come out with a newer model that will use that sort of plastic over screen again.
@@PBKreviews the stop motion you do is super helpful thanks for uploading it. I want to replace mine would this be a good one? If not do you have a recommendation? Thanks www.amazon.com/Black-Screen-Replacement-Compatible-Motorola/dp/B07Y1KVG8D/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?keywords=Motorola+Moto+Z4+parts+replacement&qid=1572061763&sr=8-5
Gorilla 3 and with a bezel on sides of screen. Bezels on screens suck because of how fragile they are. The Moto z play droid I have had been dropped more times than the new generation has on their heads. Still perfect thanks to the frame surrounding and protecting acreen
Thx for the great video!! My battery charged slowly since months but from one day to another extremely slow. I wonder if it's only the battery or also the plug connector on the motherboard. I saw I can order this part as well but is it difficult to solder it on the board?
It's possible it may be the charger port but you wouldn't know until you rule out the battery first. But the charger port would be hard if you aren't familiar with soldering.
@@PBKreviews cleaned the port again, now it's charging normal. Battery is still good after these 3 to 4 years. I have access to good electronic equipment. I would appreciate a video from you about the change out of the port, my cables fit sloppy. Thank you!!
It's not too hard but not easy if you don't have experience either. Taking the screen off you need to make sure to take it off with the plastic boarder around the glass (meaning you pry it off from between the metal frame and plastic boarder keeping the plastic boarder attached to your glass screen). Also you need to be careful you don't crack or damage the screen when using your pry tool to pry it off. After the screen is off its not too hard can follow the video and remove the screws etc and work your way to the back camera. Hardest part I would say for people who are not familiar with the process is removing the screen since the chance of damaging or breaking the screen under the glass is pretty high.
So my replacement screen came in from China yesterday. I managed to get the shattered OEM screen off, but apparently there is a very thin (delicate) plastic trim that is stuck to the glass. Re-watching the video, you make reference to this (separating the glass from the frame vs plastic). I didn't realize that what came off was two pieces, and tried to install the new display (without the plastic trim) to the metal frame and thought I got the wrong display. After carefully separating the plastic trim from the OEM screen (and the speaker grill), I see now how they go together. Unfortunately, the double-stick tape used to hold the frame to the glass, and the foam adhesive used to hold the plastic to the metal frame are both too damaged to reuse. Do you have any recommendations on where to find the correct stuff for both sides of that plastic trim?
There are many different adhesives out there, some work better than others. The plastic frame that uses a very thin strip would be hard to replicate with an adhesive strip and would be easier I would think with adhesive glue instead. But ya the ones in the link should work fine with the screen to metal frame portion.
You would just need to remove the shield covering the battery cable to disconnect the cable and then you can apply heat with a hair dryer (from the back side since you dont want to apply the heat directly to the battery) to help loosen the adhesive. It would make it weak enough that its easy to pull off, you would still need to take time and gently pry the battery off but it makes it much easier. Or you can use 99% isoprorypl alcohol to put a few drops around the battery edges and let it sit for a minute so it eats away at the adhesive, then it would be easier to pry it off that way. You can get that here: www.ifixit.com/Store/Tools/iFixit-Adhesive-Remover/IF145-400?o=4
I have links in my description for better tools since the once they usually include are not so good, but for the screen you can check this link amzn.to/2C784Zq
I have a handsfree thing in my car to hold my phone as I drive but it's magnetic and I need to take the back off my Moto z4 to put the magnet in the back of the phone. Can I do that without damaging the phone or voiding my warranty?
Sort of confused. You need to take the back glass off the phone? taking the back glass off would void your warranty. But if you are referring to a moto mod or something then ya you can remove the mod and just put the phone on the magnet. Let me know what you mean exactly and I will try n better answer the question
Do you absolutely need to remove everything prior to battery removal? I just want to replace it because of how badly my current one is charging. It's alotta steps but if I have to I do it lol
No you don't but there is little room to work with so you would need to be careful when prying the battery off so you don't damage the main board etc. Also when prying the screen off, pry off from between the plastic boarder of the screen and the metal frame. For the battery, use isopropyl alcohol and get some around the sides of the battery and let it sit for 30 seconds so it eats away at the adhesive underneath, making it a bit more easy to pry off. Here is a link for that: www.ifixit.com/Store/Tools/iFixit-Adhesive-Remover/IF145-400?o=4 and you can check mobiledefenders.com for other parts for the phone, they carry most parts for this phone.
All I think I need to do is replace my Z4 battery. The original one is bulging, causing the screen to bow out and separate from the plastic bezel. It has also made the proximity sensor(s?) and motion sensor (accelerometer?) quit working, which makes the screen go black when I make a phone call and also the Moto gestures don't work unless I press the top of the screen. Sorry for the lengthy explanation, but maybe this info will help others experiencing similar symptoms. Can I easily remove and replace the battery just by carefully separating the touchscreen from the plastic bezel, removing tape and disconnecting battery cable?
You need to gently heat the front of the phone with a hair dryer or heat gun and carefully pry the screen assembly with plastic boarder off from the aluminum frame. Make sure to pry it off with the plastic boarder since it will be harder to attach back if you only pry the glass portion. Second follow the rest of the instructions in the video to disconnect the screen cable and remove it and then disconnect the battery cable when you get to it and you can use isopropyl alcohol to apply some around the sides of the battery and let it sit for a minute so it gets underneath the battery and eats away at the adhesive a bit making it easier to pry off. You can get the isoproypl alcohol from here: www.ifixit.com/Store/Tools/iFixit-Adhesive-Remover/IF145-400?o=4
@@PBKreviews Thanks for the detailed reply! I know this is an old thread. I will tackle this in the next few days. I've replaced screens and batteries on previous Moto Z versions, so hopefully, this will be easy in comparison.
@@PBKreviews Just wanted to follow back up to say I replaced the battery successfully. Just had to be patient getting the old one out with a little heat so as to not break anything. Nice to have the screen flat again with no gap on the left side to invite dust in. And Moto gestures and prox sensors working again too -- no more black screen when making calls! Thanks again.
i have a question about a component. Much like how the big camera uses a flashing infared light while the camera is in use, the little camera on the screen has one, exept it never turns off. Even when the camera isnt in use and the screen is off, it still flashes at your face. Would you know why? Record the front of the moto Z4 using a digital camera and you will see.
That is for the always on display so when you hover your hand over the front of the phone it detects your hand and lights up the screen for you to see missed notifications and so forth.
Great video! Unfortunately, turns out my z4 has t3 screwdrivers, not t5... so headsup to others: order a t5 and a t3 torx just in case... I have no idea why they'd change the screw size but it really screwed me over. (bu-dum-tsk) *cry*
Its a small tab, if you don't see it, its possible it broke off. It lifts up like a lever. It's not too easy to get the cable in, but you need to just work at it trying to get it to go into the connector.
So my new screen just shows the charging icon and when I try to power it on it just flickers the moto logo start screen then back to the lighting bolt ⚡ charging icon?
That's what I was afraid of, but I was extremely careful during the entire process. I just unhooked the battery and reattached it ..and bam turned right on..shrug? The last question I have is, how important is the tape piece over the screen connector? I seem to have lost that piece somewhere. Again thank you a million times over. You have been tremendously helpful, prompt and kind ..all while expecting nothing in return. That is rare and you are awesome
Oof, doesn't look like there's a way to replace the microphone assembly in this one. I swear, despite how much I love Motorola phones, I have the most rotten luck with them... Especially microphones My g6 microphone was damaged when dropped and I accidentally ordered the wrong model assembly part and then couldn't find the right one (my version was slightly different than the normal release) My current phone, my Z4, also dropped and the microphone stopped working properly. So now I don't even know what to do except buy a non-moto phone I guess. I can live with cracked screens, but easily busted microphones are a deal breaker
I'm currently working on a few teardowns, but I will see about doing it. Its already been done by someone else. Usually I don't like copying someone else's work unless its unclear or in another language. I'm going to get these next 3-4 teardowns out of the way and ill possibly look into it. Thanks for the heads up.
My rear glass for the camera broke and actually scratched the camera. Anyone know where to find the camera itself for this phone. Or what if any adhesives id need to break down and repair this part
If you need I can order the camera part and camera lens glass cover with adhesive for you. But you would need to take the phone apart to be able to replace the camera itself. Send an email to pbkreviews@gmail.com if that's what your looking to do.
