Sx 4 I think it was , a buddy's cousin had one. It's fuzzy but I remember the decal down on the rocker and the extra height to get in. Haha you know how it is , a buddy's cousins sisters boyfriends father's mother in law said it was real 🤣🤣🤣
Wow, the Renaults were AMC's only chance at a modern car as the Eagle/Concord/Spirit all are basically updates of the AMC Hornet that I believe came out in 1970.
It's amazing how much more appealing Jeep's 1983 lineup is compared to their 2015 lineup. Don't get me wrong, the current Grand Cherokee is a great vehicle, and the current Wrangler is good, but the old vehicles are just so much more appealing.
Seriously? The cars/trucks from the early 80's were all steaming piles of crap! As someone that was of driving age back then, I remember being absolutely disgusted with the garbage that was being offered to consumers... Especially by American car companies. It was a terrible time to be a car enthusiast. It is the complete opposite today, since quality, variety, horsepower, and capability has never been greater than now. Today is the greatest time to be a car enthusiast!! So, carful what you wish for!
I've ridden in a Scrambler, one of my friends in high school had an '82 model. This was on March 5, 2010, so both of us were born several years after AMC folded and anything AMC-built was pretty rare by then. That Scrambler was pretty well-known around the school. There was another guy with a '50 Studebaker there, I got to ride in that one quite a few times in 2009-2010 and it was another of the school's coolest cars. Both of those people graduated a year ahead of me, I don't remember anything quite so awesome in my graduating class. I myself drove... nothing and had no license. I upgraded from nothing to an '08 Honda Accord when I was 19, not that cool but... FREEDOM! October 14, 2020 4:28 am
To think if it weren't for AMC our beloved jeeps would have gone out of style. As a owner of a Spirt and Jeeps I can say the 258 motor is one of the best built motor ever.400k miles is nothing to see on one of them motors and still running strong. As ws the little Iron duke 4cyl mad by another company now gone (Pontiac). Strange how the quality car company's went and the umm crap ones lived? make a good reliable car that will last for years and years and put yourself out of business AMC is also responsible for creating the SUV market,by introducing the 4x4 eagle. The cars were very well built and didn't suffer the quick rusting many other brands had. Sad to see them gone. I would buy the entire range of eagles and jeeps from 1983 and a Spirt,if I had the place to keep them.
My dad a CJ5 inline-6. Forgot what year it was, but he loved it. It can withstand up to 2 feet of water. Drove it until the wheels fell off... literally, LOL. He then bought a 1986 Jeep Cherokee, and still has it to this day. Refurbished, but not restored.
As a youth, my friends ad I would make jokes about "le car" we saw around town. Whoever thought it was a good idea to put that on the side, i thank you for countless punchlines spoken in bad french accents by elementary school kids.
My dad used to work at the Kenosha plant making the same vehicle...lots of stories! My grandmother used to have an Alliance sedan. She liked it for the most part! Now she drives an Toyota Camry.
that scrambler and honcho look so freaking bad ass...i can picture them with a upgrade suspension and may be a different set of rims and tires off road of course!!
My dad had an '83 CJ-5 with the 2.5 4cyl. He put 2 engines in it, and countless clutches in all the years he owned it... It was actually pretty reliable, and he drove it many years, but unfortunately, Ohio winters finally took its toll on it.
55 HP? Wow. My 1977 Celica I had as a college student old back then had 90 HP and it was adequate, but no barn burner. I can't imagine so little power.
Try a diesel VW of the era. 1.6 had 52hp and the turbodiesel had 68. Pretty slow , but can be fixed with proper gearing and pump tuning. Knocked my non turbo from a 14ish second 0-60 down to 10. No rocket but better than it was.
i know a few people who bought Alliances when they were new and the general consensus was that while reliability wasn't great they were surprisingly comfortable and quiet for a small car
I'm sorry, but that 83 Alliance is absolutely hideous. It looked like it was going to flip over when it took a turn. A smoking badass 55HP engine, I think some lawnmowers today have that much.
Good cars. Just too bad the alliance wasnt reliable. Ive always liked the looks even today. My sister had one back then, was a nice car & VERY good on fuel. Ride was very nice.
i had an 86 renault alliance when i was 16. got astonishingly good fuel economy. i dont know the specs but we rode around all day for $3. was slow and didnt handle well and parts hard to find. but it was an experience
These old cars from all manufacturers are most entertaining on the slalom and I think everyone at some point used that GM 2.5 in at least one of their models. Hell I had 3 cars with the old "iron duke"
I can't recall ever seeing a Renault on the streets here in the states. I still see AMCs and old wagoneers periodically but I don't think I've ever seen a LeCar or an alliance or any Renault for that matter on the road here.
When I was small, both the LeCar and the Alliance/Encore were pretty popular where I live. I haven't seen an example of either in years though. One of my Dad's first cars was a Renault 12 wagon which he regrets selling to this day.
Wouldn't mind finding a Spirit from that era. However, I'd really love to know what happened to the headquarters building. I wonder if it's still standing.
I just feel like if AMC was able to bridge the gap a few more years to get to the SUV craze of the early 90s that Jeep might have saved them and gave them a legit shot at supplanting Chrysler as #3.
@@realazduffman I always assumed that they checked the actual level. That's interesting. In that case, I agree that there should be a proper oil level gauge on all cars.
Its so extrange that in every country exepct us, the renault 9/11 and 18 were good and reliable cars The jeeps always were nice looking bad ass 4x4 vehicles! The awd eagle was a nice concept And what an ugly and outdated suv was the grand wagon/wagoneer, it looks like a 60's car, the 4runner was in those years!!
Building quality may have been bad and the fuel injection was worse meanwhile in other countries they were built like rocks and they used a carburetor plus they didn't have to be restricted due to emissions.
AHAHAH car of the year. They really made a mistake because this was gone a year later. The convertible is okay but honestly. Compare this to a Cadillac Eldorado from that year.
Thy were junk cars when i pulled wrenches for a living i wroked on lots of them but thy had some neat tech for its day and kind fun to drive but still junk always broke down all the time
Outside of the Concord 4 door and the Large Renault; which didn't seem to sell well.....AMC had a pretty progressive lineup for 1983. It s a shame quality and other issues relating to AMC history ultimately led them to merge with Chrysler in 1987. I remember a dealer near me even having few gray market R5 Turbos on the lot around this time. It seemed LeCars and Alliances were everywhere.......until things started breaking and the repair bills were astronomical. The Eagle 4x4 wagon was considered pretty upscale back then.
+Skyline Fever Subaru made AWD wagons. i think there was a couple of other forign brands "russian mostly" that did 4x4 cars. but yeah Eagle may very well be the first 4x4 Sedan.
Just Here For The RU-vid To me it sounded great, it was economical, and served its purpose well. The Duke has a bad reputation it doesn't deserve in my opinion.
Dburger62 To each their own, we all have an opinion. Sorry if I offended you. On the other hand, I love me the sound of an early Chevy 2.8 V6 even with the bad rep it has.
I just wish American Motors had placed a V-6 Engine in the SX-4, calling it the SX-6, or even better than that would be a V-8 therefore calling it the SX-8.
Not only that they used the 2.8 liter GM V-6 in the XJ series in 1984-86. My neighbor had a XJ Wagonneer and an S-10 Blazer from 1986 and they both had the same engine.
We have 2, a '76 and '86. Love them both. Also own a '96 Cherokee. Not interested in new Jeeps owned by Fiat. Jeep needs to break off from Chrysler before they go belly up again.
