My 88' NA Auto 115K mile garage queen supra was $8K so I'm not sure they are as cheap as they used to be lol. Hell of a lot more reasonable than most cars though and it's pretty much everything I want. I can never stop gawking at how freakin' beautiful the car looks inside and out. It's kind of amazing.
Idk now they're rising in prices. blue Mk3 just sold on carsandbids for $11k and it has the automatic tax with it. IT was in pretty good condition and it had 50k miles. I want one but waiting for the right one
My parents were Toyota owners when I was kid so when we went to the dealer, I'd always get the latest brochures. I used to stare at the Supra with lust in my eyes. I loved that car.
As a new 88' NA Supra owner I can say this body roll is very real lol. I'm thinking about getting some aftermarket swaybars put on and MAYBE coilovers too. Other than that it's pretty much the coolest car I've ever seen or owned. It looks absolutely stunning from the outside and inside IMO is better than the vast majority of cars new or old. The seats are legendary. This baby turns heads. EDIT: Have since put on Fortune 500 coilovers and a quality front swaybar, all new end link cables, and a rear strut brace myself. It's like an entirely new car, it handles like a dream.
@@mrdaykurutakuchannel I know this is 2 years late, but USDM supras never got the 1G or 1JZ. I also think the 1jz TT-R was exclusive to Asia but I may be wrong
@@bluejay9361 Yeah, 1JZ was JDM all the way. I can't really talk though because I got a 7MGE in my 88 LOL. I absolutely adore the car, but it's hard to not want a 1JZ in there.
Hector Trejo more like shitting on the competition, Supra turbo takes the z the Mr2 OPENLY CURB STOMPS THE FIERO, the Corolla will just run forever don't even start on the pick ups they are built like a tank just will not die
Totally agree. I didn't go into owning it with much other than I remember thinking it was the coolest car on the inside ever as a kid. I think it's actually one of the best seats/driver clusters ever made by far. 100% engaging and easy to read.
6:42 "...but is it able competition for the likes of Mustangs and Camaros, well not current designs, but maybe future ones..." - John Davis Well spoken Mr. Davis.
I like this version better myself. I like the boxier style more compared to the rounder shaped one you like. But that supra is still a nice looking car...
+daz samuels I prefer this to the rounded one, which is more traditionally beautiful with its flowing design, if that makes sense. I also like the 80s Pontiac Gran Prix that this month's hot rod describes as "a box with a roof", so...
Wtf? That Supra had more lean than a pirate ship. LOL Love the classic Motorweeks, when cars had their OWN unique styling... Unlike, the plasticy clone jelly beans of today. Back when Toyota was a FUN energetic company who produced cars drivers WANTED... Back in 86, they had this gen Supra, the Celica GTS, the 1st gen MR2, and the last of the RWD Corollas... The Corolla GTS(ae86). What the heck happened, Toyota?? Now, you make boring, geriatric cars for old farts. Not ONE sporty coupe in Toyotas new lineup. Pathetic.
boofdfast In 1985 they made the last solid front axle pickup trucks sold in America, yet the rest of the world bought them until like 2002. Thanks to Americans preferences we have had limited options on some vehicles. Today you can't find any more "mini" trucks like the 80's S10's, Rangers, and Toyotas. I miss those days, when you could pop open the hood & actually see pavement below the car through the engine compartment.... instead of just.... plastic.
Screw the Mustangs and Camaros of that time. This is the car I lusted after. Just out of high school and driving a '75 Pinto I could only dream of driving this car. Oh, and love the porno 'staches and satin jackets on the test crew.
+LossVegas Once I seen one, I had to have one. My Dad said he'd buy me a first car for $1500 or less. I seen one locally for just that and scooped it right up. I lied to my dad saying it was a celica, knowing damn well he didn't want me in a 130+mph supra. He tried to be pissed, but just couldn't be after he drove it.
juan tafoya no its not their greatest. Toyota has alot of great achievements. LFA, Celica Turbo AWD alltac, MR2 Turbo mid engine, Celica gt4 list goes on and on
memories memories here. My uncle brought home one just like in this video when I was a teen. Loved that car and it was so different back then. I went on to have 4 supras myself. A 85, 89, 92 turbo and 89 turbo. My 92 turbo had bolt on upgrades and was making around 300hp or so. The 89 turbo had a fully built engine and bigger turbo. It was making around 420hp@ 15PSI. The setup probably had 500+hp in it though.
my brother had one of these ,same color with the turbo and 5spd..he put stiffer and lower springs on it, better roll bars and an HKS exhaust and variable boost.. it was a beast! the springs and roll bars kept it stiff and flat..the boost turned up gave the heavy car a light on its feet feel and power oversteer at will..the exhaust sounded awesome...the damn shifter still looks like a butter churn though!
My first sports car was an 87 Supra as well. Fast forward 19 years and I have a 2006 BMW Z4M and a mostly stock 91 MR2 Turbo (my second MR2). Guess which car I enjoy driving more. :).
I had an '89 Supra as my first car when I was 17. 98k miles, turbo, 5-speed, targa top. Had to change the head gasket, that was a bitch. I miss driving it, but I don't miss owning it.
My sister had an 89 turbo Supra. It was silver with a targa top. Holy crap that thing was fast! She would let me drive it on the weekends and I smoked every car in the county. It ate Corvettes for breakfast and there were a lot of embarrased Mustang drivers. I had a lot of fun in that car!
Ha ha really you must have never caught me out in my dad's 86 buick Grand National I was 17 and he hated taking me to school after missing the bus turbo 6 vs turbo 6??? You would of seen tail lights... guaranteed
Nice, it was a trip down memory lane for me and my old '88 Supra Turbo Targa. It was even the same color as mine. Any chance of posting the "Turbo's" road test review?
I think the styling/design/comfort is absolutely mental compared to cars of the time or since frankly. After owning mine a year, I've never seen or rode in a car ever remotely like it. It's kind of a work of art inside and out which is something you could probably only say about supercars.
Damn this car was far superior than anything coming out of the US and most of Europe back then! Super loaded and great looking. It's like a 928 Porsche but reliable hehehe
Thats a 86 1/2 model. I used to have one. Supra good looking car. The inline 6 is supra smooth and so is the 5-speed manual. The soft suspension and low front made it easy to sustain damage. All in all a very nice car.
I didn't know about the extra radio antenna below the defogger on the hatch glass. I learned something after 23 years of driving a 1987 Turbo. Turbo cars came with ABS brakes. 0 to 60 is 6.5 seconds. It's overweight to be a nimble sports car. It's more about balanced style and performance than all out performance. I have the C's short shifter from Japan. Cost $250. I also have the Super monitor which was a $250 option over the stock clock. Many functions like fuel economy mpg, trip timers, when to change the oil. It was discontinued after 1988.
I owned one late 80s. It had a fatal flaw. The head bolts would come loose and leak coolant into the cylinders. First time it happed to me I had it fixed. Luckily it did not damage the engine. The second time I drove it to the toyota dealer and trade it for a new tacoma. Loved the car though.that straight 6 was awesome. Beautiful body style.
The 3rd gen Supra that you really want was only made in Japan, but you can now legally import it. 1991 Supra 2.5 R, had the twin turbo 1JZ-GTE engine under the hood, made "276" hp. Its bascially a 2.5 liter displacement version of the 3.0 liter 2JZ-GTE in the Mark IV Supra. You can use all the same hot-rodding tricks and parts to make huge horsepower.
My neighbor had the Celica Supra, 84's I think. They were all stick and and fun to drive. He always bought these cars and drove them until they rusted out. He'd go to California or Az and find another 1 to replace the rusty 1's...
Adam Trombino I had an 85 celica gts, it wasn't a Supra but it was a fun car to drive, then it rusted out everywhere. I had an 86 celica gt, it was super clean and never rusted but it was not as fun.
I miss the days of seeing Supras new on the road! I started driving in the 90s and I miss those days. Todays Toyota/Honda companies make nothing more than dull econo snooze boxes. I know this was the 80s but man, the supra were just wow as a young kid back then! Those fun car companies make nothing to wow over anymore. Sad. Oh did you see that badass corolla? ROFL yah right.
Ok, got one with 20k miles? I' lltake it!! I use to work at Honda Dealership, They got one of these Supras in, an 87 model, I use to sit in it & imagine it being mine. But IO also did that with the Conquest Tsi, the Iroc & The Mustang 5.0 too as well as the new 88 Prelude Si's too haha. I loved being able to test drive any car on the lot new or used.
When I was 18, in 2000, I bought a used 1987 Supra Turbo, Liked it so much I got a 2nd one. Sold them when I had my son. Now I only go for Toyotas, best reliability & I can work on them myself. Currently working on a 1994 Celica gt and a 1985 4runner SR5 I can't recommend them enough, I've owned 29 cars in my lifetime & have had almost every make. So I've owned more than 1 brand of vehicle in my life. Hell, my 2nd car at 16 was a 1979 Camaro, then I had a 1979 Trans Am, a 1985 Monte Carlo SS, and a 1977 Trans Am before getting my 1st Supra.
The A70 is a GT car, not a pure sports car and it's a heavy one with high tech environment and amenities ahead of it's time. Nothing is perfect. But still is the most successful Supra model ever made according sale numbers! If it was available in the JZA70 trim model outside Japan it would have blown away the competition back in 1990 across USA and Europe. A stock mk3 Supra just needs some coil overs and wheels. Same for the mk2! But the mk4 needs a lot more regarding looks.
Yeah man, I was thrilled with my bone stock 88, but with Fortune 500 coilovers and beefy front sway bar and rear strut brace, she handles absolutely incredibly! Michelin PS4 S tires and Enkei wheels, I feel like I have the best car I could ever ask for. The targa top though is major mistake lol, it did not age well in the literal sense.
This is the toyota I knew, an economy car that was interesting and heavy on value. Theres something curious and enjoyable about uber economical cars of the past.
The shocks are actually extremely nice, but yes way too soft. Once you put modern quality coilovers in and a nice front swaybar, it's a completely different car. Zero body roll and is a complete blast to drive.
