Even as an import guy, I LOVE the non-SS Cobalt. It's a modern version of the early 1970's Ford Maverick sedan. Conservatively stylish budget transportation that offers a lot of value for the money. I love the simple lines and tight aesthetics. Minimalism never looked so good.
Yeah, C&D said, "this is probably the BEST small car GM has ever built"LOL. The BEST car GM ever ASSEMBLED was the Korean Parts car, the SONIC. And that one too is HISTORY!
all issues with recalls were serviced by the dealership were all good. the year is 2022 now and the car is like in mint condition, 97,000 original miles on it. it is a garaged vehicle so that helps.
Allen Portz I agree with Hiram. I see Cavaliers quite frequently but have to wait a long time to see a Cobalt come by. Part of that is likely because of how long the Cavalier nameplate was produced for and how many GM sold (a lot!) The Cobalt and Cruze haven’t sold in anywhere near the same kind of numbers.
That Cobalt SS coupe has incredible handling! At 2:14 it sounds like a mooing cow. I like the Cobalt overall. The materials seem a bit too cheap inside (hard plastic dash, cheap seat fabric, etc), but it seems pretty well built and is very smooth and quiet for an economy car. It drives nice. I just wish it was better looking, not so bland.
palebeachbum I own an SS and I can tell you all the cheap cosmetic materials don't really matter once you get behind the wheel it is a fantastic car to drive. And even though the materials are cheap, they don't look like it. Only when you touch them
These are pretty good cars. I've seen lots at high milage, and have driven a few. But they're cheap. The platform is good (Delta platform is still being used by the Cruze and Verano today) but the interior and exterior is cheaply put together. Like really cheap. Tack on the ignition switch fiasco and you can pick a nice one of these up for peanuts and get alot of value for your money.
I just bought an '06 Cobalt SS with the NA engine for $1,000, with 322,500 kms when I bought it. it's also my first Stick Shift car, and it's the perfect car to learn stick on because it's so cheap. Best part about the car is the killer stereo, that alone was worth paying the 1,000 for.
@@PhilMante That's a steal! I got my '07 SS Supercharged for $3,200. But in all honesty I'd take forced induction (especially supercharged) over N/A any day. The sound of the M62 Blower gave me chills every time I heard it for the first few months I got it, and it still never gets old. Going strong on 291,000 km now! How does the N/A SS perform for you?
@@Rhodanide It's my first Coupe, my first speeding ticket, and my first stick shift. I wanted to get over the fear of driving stick and I did, thanks to this car. I used to hate the idea of driving stick. Now if I invest a lot of money into a car, i'm making sure it's got a clutch and a shifter. The 2.4 4-banger isn't as cool as the Super-Charged or the Turbocharged 2.0, and the NA puts out 170 HP, the SC puts out 205 HP while the TC puts out 260 HP but that doesn't matter to me at all. To me that NA is a boombox on wheels with a sunroof, and I wouldn't have it any other way. But, if you insist on going fast, I can get it up to 180 KPH/115 MPH, but of course it's not going to accelerate like a turbo would. Sadly i'm gonna sell or scrap it. the 325,000 KM count is too high, the brakes are almost shot, the oil pan gasket is leaking, the O2 sensors need to be replaced, the air bag light is on, not sure if this thing went through the ignition recall either. I still wouldn't mind throwing down 3-4 grand in the future for a turbocharged one to feel the acceleration.
I have a 09 coupe with a STICK, runs and drives great, drove it from WI to Florida and back several times NO issue, great MPG around 37mph and lots of power for a little car.
Nice car, one of my favorite cheaper cars ever made haha. My family has a 06' HHR which is built on a cobalt frame, 6 years old with almost 50k on it and it runs & drives perfectly
I just bought a 2008 pontiac g5, basically the same thing. I love how easy it is to park and it's amazing on gas. Base model tho, and manual locks are kinda annoying. Especially with 4 doors
Have a 2010 LT and great first car for a teenager. Had 82k and loaded with sunroof, factory Pioneer upgraded audio with Aux,OnStar, side curtain airbags. With purchase and some minor repairs I have $5000 in it. Hard to find much in that price range with those options and also get GREAT fuel mileage!
I agree I was going to buy an 09 HHR it rides nice but opted to stay with my Cobalt because it was paid off. But I haven't had the problems like some people complain about. I feel for them because I have had more problems with Fords than GM cars.
I have the 2010 LT and I will say it has been a good car (52,000 miles now). BUT the brakes are kind of mushy and gittery when hard stopping and the steering isnt too great. Still pretty good though
I currently own a 2006 Cobalt LT coupe and I have to say this. This car was nice to drive and made for a great everyday car for me. I managed to get over 38,000 miles out of that car believe it or not, even though I wanted to buy me a nicer car down the road.
@c00smeen I think, kind of like the Saturn L-Series, GM looked at the Opel model for inspiration... and then cross pollinated it with the (Chevrolet) Cavalier. I'm not sure if this was as good as the Astra was but it at least had better engines overall than the Cavalier it replaced. (BTW... that Cavalier was a slightly updated version of the one they had years ago in the UK)
I have a 2008 Chev Cobalt LT coupe, it has been a decent vehicle but I am disappointed in it because of the issues I keep getting. It has approx 116,000 kms (Canada) and I have had to replace a wheel bearing on the front passenger side within the past 12,000 k and now the same thing is happening again. Not to mention it has a speaker issue with the front speakers like a lot of people have had issues with. Once these problems are fixed, hopefully it stops for a while.
I had a 2009 Cobalt bought it in 2010 and 2 weeks after I bought it the key was stuck in the ignition and I couldn't turn it off and several transmission issues and i traded it in for a Toyota Corolla in 2014 i miss the remote start and the satellite radio though.
Can anybody tell me the color code for this car,I have one and I'm trying to purchase a paint spray for touch ups..having problems locading the color. Thank you
even though it started production in 1998 it continued until 2005 and then was replaced with the Astra H...so if GM has kept the specifications and the quality that is used here in europe to produce this model it is a pretty good car...it's simple and reliable...good gas mileage too...
2006 LS, 134k, haven't done any wheel bearings or anything, same engine/trans, barely any rust compared to similarly aged import cars up here, other than some fit and finish problems and recalls (which were promptly done to this one), ive never had an issue. it costs me approximately $400 per year in maintenance which is pretty great for a domestic vehicle. I have an Xterra now but I still appreciate my little Spartan sedan.
Never had one of these, but had an '83 Cavalier. Put a shitload of miles on it, and I drove it like the crazy teenager I was, never giving it the proper maintenance either--oil change? Pfft, how am I gonna afford that AND a case of beer this weekend? Never had any problems with it. Yes, the interior was cheap plastics, badly put together, and yeah the build quality was sub-par... that's how they kept it inexpensive, ffs. But it never broke down on me, had adequate power and great gas mileage. It was fine, I don't get the hate Cavaliers get.
Same here, drove a "01 for 205K miles, NO engine OR transmission issues! I however, did maintain it and wasn't TOO rough on it. Had to get rid of it though, Wisconsin Road Salt Department finally got the best of it, gotta keep them streets safe for the idiots that SHOULDN'T be "driving" in the Winter months!
in europe this is a 7 year old car...and is known as 1998 Opel/Vauxhall Astra G...and the coupe version is the 2000 model.pretty old for 2005 technology and innovations...
Cheap transportation and you still see them and cavaliers running around. Still are cheap transportation. Good first car or daily beaters..Would love to have a supercharged SS coupe , though.
Had a Cavalier. Reliable and well made car. Had a Cobalt SS after that. What a POS that was. Always in the shop, crappy fuel mileage, recalls galore. Chev went the wrong way on that one.
I see tons of them in Northeastern CT. I actually have a 06 cobalt coupe in yellow with a manual and my dad has an 07 white sedan. I guess it depends where you live, some brands are more prevalent than others in places. There's actually two others right down the road from us, that's four within a quarter mile range.
They show 2 versions of the Chevy cobalt But only give you test numbers for the supercharged version that no one ever bought. Obviously GM paid for this because the motor week staff never mentioned anything about its rental car styling and cheap plastic interior. And BTW to anyone out there that have seen tens Or even hundreds of thousands of these little garbage cans come and go over the years has anyone ever seen one with leather interior?
You do realize the timing chain tensioner on the 2.2 ecotec is a half hour job to change out, right? It is really rare these motors snap the chain without an extensive warning. I'm a diehard ford guy but those 2.2 ecotec were one of the best motors GM ever made.
I rented a cruze and I was dissapointed defrost had to be on all the time or ice would form inside the car. ride quality was poor and the seats were not comfortable. i would not trade my cobalt right at this time for the cruze for now my Cobalt rides better more comfortable seating I am waiting for a few years to get the bugs out of the cruze might go Verano step quality
@DrClaw77 A little too much inspiration if I think about it...the interior looks exactly like VW's Golf/Jetta Mk4...engine- opel...shape- opel...what's GM about this car?...and the coupe is exactly the same as the Astra G coupe minus the tail and front lights, they're similar but not the same...But if it's as reliable and economical and simple as the Astra, then it's a good car...even if it's Franken'car... ;)
Same with the car "rags", giving out "car of the year" awards, like JD Power hands out awards to Chevy.......BREAKING NEWS: J D Power just handed out ANOTHER J D Power award to CHEVROLET! Chevrolet must be tired of winning ALL the time!!
I bought a 2010 and was VERY disappointed. Interior quality is TRASH, flimsy as hell. The exterior door handles feel like they're going to fall off and my steering box makes a weird clunking noise.
If Ford was so great why did they drop Mercury line and not make it better Ford Junk. The freestyle was one of th worst wagons on the road why call it a freestyle and then the Taurus X. STUPID
Yeah... A good family friend of mine has a 2009/2010 cobalt, almost every feature except leather and heated seats, I've driven it a lot. It sucks. It's not comfy, steering is awful, it only has 50,000 kilometres on it, and it's had multiple issues, at one point it wasn't even starting. She wanted to sell it to me but I ran away as fast as I could. On the good side it was quiet on the highway. Lol,
@Jonathan A. II need help with my car I was wondering if you could figure out my problem my RPMs have to be read so I've to get it to move I can understand what's going on can you help me please
"high quality" haha mine is so flimsy i fear it could break any minute, ride has been horrid since i bought it new, my old malibu was better riding. I wanted to trade even for a civic one model year older at the local dealership but he wanted another 6 grand. I'm stuck with the POS until it's paid for. no more GM for me....
Not only do these have ignition issues, I've heard of people who've died in these. Not because of crappy rollover protection, no. It caught on fire. That's why I will never buy any new Chevy.
I had a 1996 Cavalier LS sedan, was still a better car than a Cobalt. Every friend I knew back in HS had one, every one of them complained about how much money they spent trying to keep up with them. And three of them asked if I wanted to trade my Cavy for a Coby. Hell no, the Cavalier outlasted nearly all the Cobalts in my school's parking lot by senior year, the only Cobalts that were "trouble free" were the 09-10 MY and those kids still made it to school on time. What a pile of crap, and this came from a Cavalier owner at the time.
Interesting that the ‘95 Cavalier had ABS standard for $10,060 and this one didn’t at $4,000 more. Yes, I know the concept of inflation but also of depreciation of tooling ;) “Brand new model...yes, no.”
Success lmfao!!!!!!!! Yeah so mucb success after the Caviler, cobalt and now the Cruze. Just stick with one name GM. Also high quality and cobalt do not belong in the same sentence.
Why the fuck is the interior quality the only thing people care about in a Chevy car? Toyota makes shittier stuff and so does Ford. Stop complaining about the goddamn interior quality and focus on what really matters, the handling, engine and what not. Chevy comes out on top in my opinion.
Because 99% of your time, you're sitting in the interior, probably in traffic. For most people, they want a comfortable, convenient ride, not a track star.
I suggest you people out there not to buy nor drive this CAR!!!!! This car has problems with the electric power steering wheel. This car can get have the power steering go out and stop working. And the ignition key switch which can switch from on to acc mode. I suggest for you to get a new car.
