I know right. Just blew my motor in my 08 LT. Putting a new engine in her as we speak with only 30k on it. She blew at 160K. Last owner kept it stock but didn’t take care of it. I was bringing her back to life piece by piece and maybe having to much fun with her.
My sister gave me her 2.2 lt, and at first I thought nothing of it but to use it as my daily for work. But then since I have body shop education, I thought it will put my skills to the test and my knowledge. Now I'm like wait what else can I do to this lil bad boy. Its only got 85k and this video opened my eyes to whats possible with this car!
Cobalt, G5, and Ion Redline videos are inspiration to us HHR LS guys. I made my own exhaust 2.50 out from the manifold, cats delete, resonator delete, cherry bomb single chamber, and 2.50 out to muffler. 😅
After driving mine from California to Washington and back I was amazed at the performance. I decided to fix everything broken and now I am looking to enhance.
I have a 08 2.4 sport basically a N/A SS its lowered with the 2.5 inch zzp exhaust, after market intake at around 151k miles runs great, its not fast but its fun and will zip corners doesn't sound like a fart box honda neither.
honda sounds worse than the Cobalt. I know this because I know people who owns Cobalts, and tiny 4 cylinder equipped hondas. Any four cylinder motors below 2.0L is tiny.
I agree with you on the exhaust. Bought the ZZP 2.5" exhaust for my LT about 6 months ago. Its sounds great and sounds better as you use it. One of my best purchases by far and a great price.
I appreciate your honesty and personal thoughts. I have a 14 Sonic rs 6speed lowering springs, zzp tuned, k&n typhoon cold air intake, slotted rotors all around upgraded break pads, zzp rear sway bar, yellow led fog nights, led headlights, led rear turning single and break lights.zzp dash dual pods for boot gauge and battery, genuine Chevy roof rack, zzp front grill insert. Fun little car to drive around in and especially when getting on the highway lol.
I have an 08 LT. I bought it 5 years ago with 110,000 miles on it and I just hit 130K. Love the car and I've always wanted to put forged internals in it and that supercharger kit. They are fun little cars for sure.
this is precisely what im in the middle of doing now, GL with your project! - make sure you remember that Transmission too, a nice TH400 with that kit would be great!
@@graphsicimagevinyls5882 Hey, I know it's been a long time, but could you maybe drop some advice or links as to putting some forged goodies into the engine? I'm considering supercharging or turboing my 09 LT in like a year, I'm just not sure what I would need to replace and where to find those forged replacements. Yes, I am aware that turboing an LT is pretty weird, but thats the fun part about it lol. A couple of people keep telling me to just dunk a bunch of money into an SS instead, but surely it can't be too bad to change bits of my motor and just run some (relatively) low boost pressure. Like a K04 I mean.
I have an 08 Cobalt Sport I love the 2.4 in it! I have a ram air intake on it now has a deep tone. And some better plugs also from zzp. Plus some zzp stickers and oil cap of course Love these cars. I plan on putting in all the n/a mods i can. and building it all motor.
@Jay Iidd For power? Forced induction, turbo or supercharger. Everything else power wise KS a waste of time and money. Unless you are alright spending many hours and $1,500 to pick up 10hp. Beyond that, put in a rear sway bar, new control arms, and coil overs.
Drive it as hard as you can for as long as you can. Plus side is parts are super cheap. Bolt ons and all the suspension mods in the book is a fun set up. #momentumcar
holy shit just realized zzperformance is located where i live. been coming back to this video a lot just to remind myself what are good options for modifying.
Got a 2009 five speed and just put a new clutch kit in it. Bought for 2.2k back in 2019 with 90k miles plus $1360 clutch a starter install $278 two back tires and alignment Now it has almost 115k miles.
I just got a 2010 cobalt lt 50k miles for 7k absolute steal I put Apple car play in it , new halo headlights, rubber floor mats , carbon fiber antenna , etc I just wanna keep it reliable through college and even my older life.
Sounds like a fantastic base to start from. Just a few bolt ons and some suspension mods and you'll have yourself an extremely fun reliable ride for years to come.
@@ZZPerformanceChannel thanks ! It was garage kept by an old couple so very clean shape car facts were good ! What’s the best suespeneion mods for a budget ?
Recently I got a 2009 2.2 LT in good condition with 70,000 miles. Initially, my goal was to just improve its appearance and maintain its condition. It now looks pretty clean and almost at what I’m aiming for. I just installed a K&N cold air intake and it motivated me to explore what else I could do. I’m pretty aware that this car isn't ideal for extensive modifications, but I just want to somewhat upgrade it, considering it's my daily driver for the meanwhile until eventually get a new vehicle. This video honestly helped and gave me push I needed
I have a 08 Cobalt Sport coupe with a 2.4 auto. trans. the car is pretty fun to drive as is & I always thought they were under rated as far as being a dependable . Thanks for the video. I'll just use the ( KISS ) method on mine.
I have an 09 lt auto. Wish it was a stick but it is what it is. They're fun little cars if u can hit peak tq during a shift from 2nd to 3rd gear, it feels like it's doing a little pull
Apparently the automatics were stronger than manual transmissions stock so I'm gonna test mine to the limit. Actually already have with neutral "launches" lol
I don't have a 2.2 Cobalt but I share the same fate with the 2.2 ion, no tuning. By the time I wanted to even mod the car (was never interested in cars) was when I found out there was no tuning support. I'm glad I did the research 😂 but a couple suspension & N/A stuff doesn't hurt 😉
@@SimbaUchihaa I'm gonna be honest i barely know anything. Haltech is just an option, theres other ecu's as well. I was looking into megasquirt at first. I guess we have to read/watch RU-vid videos. Because I'm thinking of potentially running boost on a 03 Ion I just acquired.
Aftermarket injectors, cold air intake and ZZP shorty header-down pipe and cat back system. On a 2006 2.2 Ion manual gave my commuter car a noticeable punch and peep! I'm guessing 20ish HP, maybe more. No tune, no ECU reflash. Not sure if I just lucked out or what? Best $600 spent in my life, and I'm 53. Needed new exhaust anyhow, and OEM replacement was going to cost about the same...
Got a 09 Chevy cobalt LT coupe that just passed 196,000 miles on it. Ive had it for about 7 months and I’ve put headers, high flow cat, short ram intake and catback exhaust. It’s a sleeper lol. Still need a tune just saving some money
Brought my ‘10 2.2 sedan to Michigan for a turbo and tune. Tune kept shutting off my car for unknown reasons. While the car was a blast for the first 4 hours of the drive home (aside from the random kills at low rpms).. the last 2 hours were horrible seeing as my downpipe and turbo separated because they weren’t torqued correctly.
@@ItsNys i would have taken the car back to them so they could fix their mistake...do you still have the car?? i have a 2.2 coupe 2010 that im getting tuned by a well known tuner in my area -Shuetunning . i also have skunkworks stage 2 cams that i will be installinng before i go tune the car
If you have a 04-06 model, can you at the very least get a Standalone ECU for it and learn how to tune it yourself with the basic bolt ons just the same but learn how to set up base maps and fuel settings and such? Very good video btw!
@@MrJohnnyDistortion yes thanks, I had checked before and found out B&M didn't make em for my car. However, I did further searching today & found one made for my vehicle 👍🏿👍🏿
Now the 2.4L in the cobalt is the same in the Malibu I have a 08 Malibu with a 2.4L LE5 engine and wondering will boost mods work I’ve seen one guy on RU-vid do it so far
First mod you need is a new transmission, my over drive went out at 150000, still to this, even drove it like that from ga to oh, to move and still kicking till I fix it up lol, and still with it like that it still does 120 with 3 gears lol
A bolt on a tuned 2.2/2.4 would make for a very fun daily, if I didn't have my sonic for a daily I'd be having myself another base model cobalt, lots of ways to make them fun without spending a ton of money
I have an 06 2.2... i was really depressed to find out there was no tuner support for that ECM. I'm half tempted to rip and replace the harness and ecm with one from an 08 just so i can play with the tuning. I want a 2.4 tb on it and i want to change shift points. Getting a different car is just not an option. This cars is only worth 2k cash and i dont have money to throw around for another car. I dont mind spending small bits here and there over time though to mod a daily driver.
@@cpufreak101 Im doing research again on it because i got the bug again. Looking at swapping to the 2007 L61 ecu and harness without the VVT. From what i gathered, the TCM would have to be swapped as well but the BCM can stay. May have to hack the harnesses up a bit and replace the top end and the crank position wheel and sensor. Thing that irritates me is looking on forums and everyone just dismisses it and says "buy a cobalt with what you want" but they are asking minimum of 10-15k for ss balts if you can find them. Might just do standalone and try to get it waivered... ive done MS before on a probe and miata...
@@sergeantseven4240 reply is appreciated! I do wonder if the TCM part can be skipped in a stick shift car. otherwise I think what they mean is just buy an 07+ Cobalt/Ion/HHR with the tuneable ECM versus going straight to an SS
It maybe possible to do custom mapping the ecu with an oe replacement aftermarket unit, as for the original A/C Delco- GM unit, its probably locked and can't change any of the ecm mapping in it, without the GM specialized ecu programming equipment. Not 100 % certain, but seems like it could possibly work out, with the aftermarket ecu unit.
Every time i have to pass some stupid m-fker on the highway, i remember that my car was dyno tuned by zzp to get the job done. problem is, my transmission is glass after 63k miles of abuse. catches up to ya lol.
I've been talking with someone who says they can tune the lower year Cobalt's and Cavalier's with the ecotecs. Key point on says right now. He was working with Cavalier World before it shut down. I'm going to be rebuilding/upgrading my trans and engine and supercharging my 2005 Cavalier in about a month and will update you after. If you're interested in talking to him now I can give you his email, just leave a comment and I'll send it to you.
I'm putting my build here if you're interested since the first comment was getting long Mostly full rebuild of the trans (steel plates, bands, seals, washers, new/upgraded electronics, :OPT 4T40 kit with almost all the extras:, LSD kit) full engine rebuild kit, new valves(oem), forged rods, blower cams from COMP Cams, rebuilt M62, SS intake, (ZZP super kit, 82 springs, new rollers, updated lash adjusters), complete front suspension replacement, all new coilovers (KYB strut plus) and will be painting the engine bay, and everything attached to the engine more or less.
Hey guys just want to say Trifecta Performance will tune the 2005 and 2006 2.2s if you contact them directly not a huge HP increase but they can do a little tuning
@@christopherloewen1433 Ahh, that's odd, if it's about the 2.0s (even though it's really the same block pretty much) maby they were worried about people not realizing the compression differences and tuning it like a 2.2/2.4.
What’s your exact exhaust setup? Like the brands and everything’s I got a 05 Ls that I built into a SS and no exhausts seem to sound good, their all high pitched and fart can sounding, looking for a deeper tone
I've been through 5 engines on this car. Tbh this engine for 07 is not all that reliable. Or maybe it's just me having bad luck? Idk. But I have a fully built NA 07LS model. Love the tune. Woke the car up a lot.
The L61's can be super reliable, I've never had a problem with mine. With proper maintenance they can last a lifetime. Really big pain point on the Ecotec's is just the timing chain, service that and they're usually good to go.
Unfortunately the entire auto industry is at a crawl right now due to shipping shortages. We do plan on restocking but we don't currently have an estimate on when that will be.
Do I need to get control arms or will I be fine if I dnt and lower the cobalt with springs and struts? Can I still install the sway bar without purchasing the control arms??
You can install struts, springs, and a sway bar without replacing the control arms. We only suggest new control arms because the stock ones are often shot in older models, but everything should fit with or without them.
@@ZZPerformanceChannel my cobalt just hit 70k miles so the control arms should be fine I bought It 2 years ago with only 25k! Sadly it's the Ls model but the paint and car is in great shape by the way when will the zzp intake tube for 2.2s be available been trying to purchase it for weeks and it is still out of stock
Is your cobalt awd or just fwd? I’m trying to buy one because of what you said with the 05-6’s being not as supportive with tunings. I rock the 05 sedan. Used to be my family’s everyday car. Was super taken care of. Hit 200k recently but still runs beautifully. Ever since I got into cars..been wanting to tune mines.. but idk, kinda just want another better one. I’ve appreciate the car ever since I’ve been driving it for the year and a half that I’ve been on the wheel with my license. I’ve been more fond with awd, or rwd. Not sure if I’m feeling fwd tbh
The Cobalt only comes as a fwd. They're still a great car to add some power to and rip around town in. If you prefer rwd we also support the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky platforms.
@@ZZPerformanceChannel dude this whole time since last year I thought I was driving awd 0_o thanks lol that helps a lot. Makes sense how my wheels spin out to the side whenever I floor it on wet streets lol. It was all common sense but that was the only thing I didn’t I was misinformed on my own lol
