Mount Caburn - 17/4/2024 - Collapses, wind direction and a vario settings - general fly talk. 

For anyone else watching, here's a foolproof trick for understanding the wind direction whilst ridge soaring... Point yourself roughly into wind and then fine tune your heading until your glider has zero _horizontal_ motion over the ground - if the ground underneath you appears to be tracking to your right (relative to your legs), you need to turn more to the right to point into wind and visa versa. The glider is now moving like a train on tracks (fixed to the ground), and the tracks point straight into wind. It's important to do this every so often to keep aware of changes in wind direction. Definitely something which I still find challenging as a low airtimer; and as you pointed out very well Jacque, it's super important for keeping us safe - only fly when the wind is nicely upslope and avoid getting in the lee of spurs when it's crossed (see Chris Williams' accident explanation video).
