I love what you did and I have a staghorn fern that I bought for this exact purpose. I live in NC and found a felled hardwood tree which you don't see that often. I loaded up my car with all kinds of bark and pieces of stump to use for this exact purpose in beautifying my home and outside. (I see that you're a silver and turquoise person like me. 😊) Thanks for the demo.

The growth point should be facing the upward (to the sky), so it seems to me that the plant was mount upside down

When you say the growth point, are you referring to the antler fronds being on top of the shield fronds, or vice versa?

Yes it was planted upside down. He means the big disc leaf thing. It’s supposed to face the sky.

yes upside down. shield leaves (in nature) hold the plant to surface and trap moisture.

Ok. I bought some walnut wood slices in Amazon and I mounted a coue of my staghorn ferns to them. The next day, BOTH of them looked like someone cut a slice of pizza out of them. How to I prepare the wood so it won't split? I'll wait for your response before I take them off of the eood

What can you use if you don't have Moss? Hay or straw?

Buy some. Sphagnum moss is available at any home or garden center. There’s really no substitute

How long does it take for the fern to adhere to the wood?

Does the tree type matter?

You mean the piece of tree branch the fern was mounted to (not the kind of tree you can hang it in)? I think just about any piece of wood would do. I often see staghorn fern pups mounted to just scraps of wood. It could be a piece of 2x4. The only thing I wouldn't use is any kind of pressure treated lumber, or other chemically treated wood, just in case the chemical toxins in the treated wood would have some negative effect. You could check with your local Master Gardener office. I have always loved the staghorn ferns and finally have a couple in my yard. They are so interesting looking.

Any wood is fine. The plant doesn’t take nutrients from the wood. I’ve mounted on all kinds of wood. I wouldn’t use treated lumber though.

Please wear gloves when handling sphagnum moss - there is a fungal disease that you can get through any small cut or nick in a cuticle. www.cdc.gov/fungal/diseases/sporotrichosis/index.html
