For my latest video I partnered up with Amanda and David from the Mammoth Tuff Gravel Race. We wanted to show some of the differences between Mountain Bikers and Gravel Bikers. At the end of the day we all just love having a great day on the bike...just as long as our tires aren't TOO fat. 😂

Just got home from a ride where I almost hit a woman on a fat bike head on because she was weaving all over the road. Fat bikes have terrible handling and attract people who don't ride often, so they're usually a double whammy of out of control

Been riding all my life but started riding a fat bike a year+ ago and I'm doing things and taking big jumps that i never seriously considered before. Indestructible. Makes everything not "sketchy". Not having to worry about rims is the best. Im by the coastal plains. Lots of low lands bayous that floods. No problem. And God it makes you strong !!

It depends on shoulder width and what grips you're using, but 760-800 is the window for current mountain bikes, maybe less if you're racing or sticking to easier terrain, or riding narrow trails in wooded areas. I would never buy a bar less than 780mm with today's "rider forward" geo.

When people say they want a bike to ride around on mixed surfaces, I always say to get an XC bike. If you can only have one bike and you mostly ride road but do some gravel and mild singletrack, then I can see why you'd want a gravel bike with 2 wheel sets. Otherwise, can an XC bike. It may not be as fast on the road, but it'll handle far more rougher terrain, opening up more tracks for the rider.

And I'll stick with the MTB shorts as well lol. Now if I can just ride the new bike since Fedex can't seem to get it here on time.

@brandonhoffman4712
@brandonhoffman4712 Месяц назад
Fitness bikes are gravel bikes with flat bars. I've heard the drop bars are better for longer distance and for aerodynamics which mean quite a bit for bikes. I only have a full suspension bike right now (2014 Trek remedy 7). It was given to me by my step father. I'm riding it every other day, I'm up to 30 mile stretches (just hit that goal), my next goal is 50 mile rides, i just bought a new seat and a light system. I typically ride no hands for better aero, particularly into the wind. The bike is insane! I can ride no hands on grass for 50 yards, even over the concrete water valve boxes in the ground... I want a drop bar bike bad. The only drop bar bike I ever owned was a classic schwinn my grandma gave me back in the day. I actually liked that bike a lot even though the frame was too small for me. My childhood biking was BMX. As far as the clothes, I have 0 intention on wearing those roadie shorts. But only time will tell, aero is aero is aero... For now it's Fox pants and dakine padded undies.

Mountain bikes got so crazy they left a gap to be filled on normal trails. I can ride my full suspension bike with no hands on the grass and through pot holes. If I see an orange on the street I ride over it with no hands too! The only reason I'm riding the mtb is because it was given to me for free and it's the only bike I own. If I had a gravel bike, my mtb would be collecting dust, having me considering giving it to my brother.

I hope they come to their senses and make a bit stronger gravels (a bit more travel and stronger overall geometry for single trails) so i can buy something that I actually need. Depends on what you're riding. It certainly can be.

Aren't gravel bikes just mountain bikes coming full circle? Have a look at the original mountain bikes of way back yonder.

Gravel bikes. The biggest marketing con ever. Just put a few grams on your road bike with some disc brakes, and buy a spare set of wheels with grippier tyres.

Road bikes can’t handle some of the bigger tires. Road bikes also don’t have 1by (yet) which is a great option for most gravel/dirty roads where you’d use a gravel bike.

80 miles on a gravel bike and your just shy 20 miles from a Leadville 100. Thats alot

That's what I was thinking! 80 miles of gravel is a full day's outing. I usually bring over 1k of calories in various forms whenever I do that many miles of good gravel. Depending on how gnarly the terrain is, that's equivalent of a full century on a road bike, or even more! Who are these people that just casually pump out 80 miles? Unless it's easy, rail trail gravel, I can't imagine it.

@@Greyghostvol1 I did 130 km = ~ 80 miles some weeks ago in 5 Hours driving time (1,5h breaks) Its not that hard, i could add maybe 20 more miles. But i was at my destination so i enjoyed the city and went back via train :)

ALL gravel bikers will break a collar bone or worse. ALL, its only a matter of time. The position is not safe and simple put-off on a MTB become end-o for someone in the drops.
