Any outdoor activity can be really fulfilling, but my activity of choice is mountain biking. A mountain bike can quickly cover any terrain, and take you amazing places inaccessible by many other vehicles. Plus, mountain biking is a great way to get in shape, push yourself, and even make lifelong friends.
The vast majority of mountain bikers went on their first ride with a friend, parent, or coworker who was already experienced. When your experienced friend takes you out on the trails, they can fix your mechanical problems, warn you about obstacles ahead, and even tell you when to shift gears. The thing is, not everyone has that guidance.
Meet Lisa. She’s not an actress and she’s never been mountain biking before, but she wants to learn. Follow along with Lisa as she learns how to ride, how to find trails, and how to perform basic maintenance on her bike. She’ll go through everything you will, and probably have a lot of the same questions. She’s going to have a lot of fun, and probably make a lot of friends, but she sure as hell won’t be doing it on this bike. This is a hybrid, or comfort bike. Surprisingly, it’s sometimes mistaken for a mountain bike. The shocks, the gears, and the fat tires make it look like it’s designed for riding off road, but this sticker states otherwise. So we’ll need to max out Lisa’s credit card and get her set up for the trails.
First she’ll need a bike, a helmet, and some gloves. She’ll also need a floor pump with a gauge, as tire pressure is really important in mountain biking. She’ll also need a hydration backpack, which holds lots of water, and other stuff like her cell phone, supplies, and car keys. Speaking of car keys, Lisa will need a bike rack, unless she’s okay with putting a filthy muddy bike in her back seat. I’d also recommend a multitool. Altogether, this will cost around $1000, but that’s just a guide. You may already have some of this stuff, and often times you can find it used.
Over the course of a year, many people spend over $1000 on coffee, and definitely more than that on ordering in lunch. Do the math. Chances are you could make your own coffee, pack your lunch, or scale back on something else to make room for mountain biking.
With the right beginner gear, Lisa has the headroom she needs to grow and improve without being limited. She has a bike that can be easily maintained, repaired, and upgraded, and gear that will last her many many rides. In the upcoming videos we’ll go over all this stuff, where to get it, and how to use it.
Now that she’s all set up I’m thinking we should shock Lisa’s system with a ride on Porcupine Rim, a 3000 foot descent along the edge of a mountain, followed by a bone jarring ride across miles of Jeep road. Then, a blistering descent along a big friggin cliff…or we could start on some dirt paths and teach Lisa the basics first. That’s the safest way to start mountain biking; getting used to your bike before you try anything crazy.
Lisa is riding through a beginner trail, which is usually just a dirt path with some loose terrain. This isn’t much different from riding in the street, but it does get you used to riding in narrow spaces with tight turns. To find mountain bike trails there are apps, and websites that show listings by area. This listing on singletracks.com shows the difficulty level of these trails. Green dots are for beginners.
Before we start turning Lisa into a mountain biker she’ll need to know some terminology. We’ll do a little of this in every video, but first we’ll start with the most basic terms you’ll hear the most. This is a hardtail, or a mountain bike with front suspension. Some bikes also have suspension in the rear. These are called “Full suspension mountain bikes”. Full suspension, hardtail. Most beginners get hardtails because they’re less costly and easier to maintain. This is singletrack, or a narrow trail designed for one rider at a time. Most mountain bike trails are singletrack, so you’ll hear this term a lot. It usually just means a trail. This is a trailhead, or the entrance to a trail system. This is where you’ll park your car, get set up, and meet with your riding buddies.
So before Lisa goes to the trailhead to ride some singletrack on her hardtail, she’ll need to learn how to use all this gear, install a bike rack, and master a few techniques that make riding singletrack different from riding pavement. If you’re an experienced mountain biker who follows this channel, now’s the time to get your friends started by turning them on to this series. We’ll still be doing the normal stuff in between, but every couple of weeks I’ll be releasing another episode with lessons for beginners. Try to be helpful and answer questions in the comment section.

Since this question will inevitably be asked, I'll tell you that mountain bike gear is all unisex, with the exception of clothing and seats. Just get something your size and you'll be good to go. If I chose a male for this series I'd use all the same gear including the gloves with the little butterflies on them.

Seth's Bike Hacks hey Seth. I have a norco ryde dirt jumper with mechanical disc brakes. I'm thinking about getting some hydraulic brakes. Is this upgrade worth it or should I get some other upgrades first. Bike is stock except for new grips. Thanks Seth or anyone else that answers

I've been there. Not for 4 years but 2 at the very least. Back when I wasn't doing all-year riding and all I had was a portable pump (not even kidding). It's one of those things that make one feel really dumb.

I went about 10 years. I used a portable jump starter with an inflation pump or a 12v pump. The hand pump worked good in a pinch. I just recently bought a road bike and doing 110 psi with a mini pump really sucks. I finally bought a Serfas pump because my friend had one. He used it the other day to air up his car tire in the parking lot. I should have bought one years ago.

Hey Seth, it's nice to see you doing this series. It takes a special type to actually address all those commenters with those basic questions. It's also smart that you did it as a series as apposed to answering all of them one at a time. Good job.

From someone that hasn't rode or owned a mountain bike since the mid-nineties....this is a huge help. My husband and I both want to have our daughter out riding her bike like we did, so new bikes for us! And after watching a few or your videos and seeing the difference between a big box bike vs a quality built bike....we're surprising our 6 year old with her own mountain bike too! Thanks for sharing!

I am a experienced beginner who has started to make their own repairs and I am feeling limited by my bike (A 2005 TREK 820) Should I buy new parts or get a new bike? Also I am 14 and make about 200$ a month at my new job. Any advice regarding the bike?
@alexrichards7989
@alexrichards7989 7 лет назад
Funknunkun I'd invest in a new bike if you want to move on to more aggressive trails
@th3gr33kness
@th3gr33kness 7 лет назад
Funknunkun I would recommend selling your trek and puting the money towards a more modern hardtail. The bike you have might get you by on dirt paths but when you start advancing and trying jumps and drops, which I'm assuming you will as a 14 year old, you will find the bike won't won't hold up and you will end up spending money on repairs. You don't have to spend a ton to get a capable hardtail that will allow you to take on more difficult terain when you inevitably improve. In short learn the basics on the trek then upgrade the bike after you have saved enough.
@Funknunkun
@Funknunkun 7 лет назад
th3gr33kness I tend to do a lot of jumps and I ride a balanced combination of Street and Dirt (like seth). So should I still get a new hardtail? Because even though the bike has nice parts they are too old to have serviced and I feel like it will end up being more expensive to replace everything rather than buying anew one. Thanks for the help too! :)
@dwcanker
@dwcanker 7 лет назад
I know Seth is sponsored/given stuff from Diamondback so it may sound like shilling but the DB hook, line, sync'r series are good buys and are the kind of geometry I think a 14 year old kid would really like. The raleigh tokul same parent company is basically the same thing and also comes in cheaper versions. Longer travel forks, slacker head angles, and short chainstays.
@brandonday2494
@brandonday2494 7 лет назад
If you're spending more than $100-200 in repairs or upgrades or something, just save for a new bike and sell your Trek to cover the rest. After ten years, even a reasonably inexpensive bike is likely to have better components all over. And since you're 14 and likely going to grow out of a new bike, maybe the best option is just to try a find a lightly used bike a year or two old to save some money. Just make sure to get it checked out before you buy it.

I have never fallen as beginner. Well I did fall because stupidity, but never really while properly riding. It's only when I began doing more demanding stuff. My first fall was on a cheap combination of lose rocks and a really sharp turn. I was accelerating out of a previous turn, could have been at 24-26kmh at that point. My rear got too far ahead and it knocked me hard enough to pull my body backwards (with hands still on bars), which made me unwillingly lock out my front wheel, which unfortunately found surprising amount of grip in all that mess and I was sent over the bars. Fell on my side, had blood on my knee and shirt. The rocks hurt like hell. I broke into laughter the moment I touched the ground and as I was getting back into the seat only a few seconds later, I felt a strange sense of accomplishment. At that moment, I was thinking "it finally happened".

A great idea for a new series of videos. I started riding less than two years ago after a former student who is a beast of a rider took me under his wing. I still remember those early days filled with terror, wonder and determination. It's funny that I do not remember my progression as a rider but looking back where I started is a humbling experience. I'm excited to experience this process of growth as an observer. Thanks for such life affirming videos!

The problem is that those rings are designed to let the chain shift off. If you hit a bump it will de-chain. Single speed chainrings have wider teeth that keep the chain from popping off, so removing the outer and inner isn't the same as buying a new one. Been there, done that...

I'm one notch above beginner and just bought my first pure MTB. I did some trail riding on my Specialized Crosstrail and it didn't go so well. $300 and 1 Kona Lanai later and I've been on 10 rides in 3 weeks, here in Colorado. My first upgrade most likely won't be tubeless, but a cheap dropper post. I find myself lowering my seat before descents manually and then putting it back up at the bottom. I think tubeless and clips is terrible advice for a beginner, but a $130 dropper post would probably be worth the upgrade.

As someone getting set up to start mountain biking, thanks for doing this. I've learned a lot from your videos already. Greetings from Brazil!

Intermediate and I miss riding singletrack. WE RV full time and I am able to explore some campgrounds. It's a trade off and the scenery is great but I sure do miss trail riding. I never got to join a group but would see them when I would ride a few years ago. Love the videos Seth!

Thank you so much for doing this! Mountain biking is so intimidating, but looks so rewarding. This is a great introduction for those of us who don't have experienced friends.

Nice video, I began mountain biking about 3 months ago, this to supplement my gym rat and hiking activities. Mountain biking is awesome and gets my adrenaline up fast. I came across many of the same questions: hardtails, mm of travel, alignment, carbon, types of forks, tubeless, flats, clipless, calipers, pads, 29, 27.5, 2.2, 2.5, bunny hops, 360, wheelies, and the list goes on an on. I'll follow up on Lisa's adventures.

I love how descriptive you ar and how spot on you are with tips and tricks. I used to mtb way back in the day and it's how I lost tones of weight. after about 8 yrs of not riding anymore. I gained a LOT of weight and am thinking of riding again cause I hate working out and it's more fun and easier to ride a bike through some gnarly trails. I wish I had vids like this back when I used to ride. thanks for the awesome vid

Great stuff. my only modification would be to buy a waterbottle+cage vs buying a hydration pack. Sometimes that extra $100 might make the difference. great stuff Seth!

Seth, thanks for your videos. Just what I need. Lots of road cycling experience and 35 years on a motorcycle. Not ashamed to say i know very little about MTN biking but everyone had to start somewhere. Just retired after 45 years in healthcare so I have lots of time to make mistakes and learn from them. Everything is uphill ( pun intended) from here.

Great video! I started on my own too (about 3 yrs ago). It was pretty confusing at first; which bike, what gear, etc. There are a lot of choices, and even more opinions. It's very helpful to know the "why" behind things. Mostly it was, and still is, about putting the biggest smile on my face. I hope Lisa and all those starting out have as much fun as I did, and continue to do. Thanks again, & we'll see you at Alafia.

Glad you made this, my friend has an old mountain bike and I've been teaching him a lot of stuff and now we're building a jump trail! I'm using my childhood bike as a jumper it's a diamondback recoil 2012
