Did get our Y from Berlin some weeks ago. Owner of three Model S cars 2013, 2014 and 2015 all driven about 350.000 km each and still no major problems. Only changed the 12 volt batteries and brake pads. This Y is very impressive and we did move our free SuC to the Y, so happy.

AWD is especially useful in winters with snow, ice and hilly terrain. In a flat country where it rarely freezes during the day, a RWD is more than enough. In a “vision” Tesla in snow and rain I saw that the cameras are of little use. This is also the case in my IONIQ 5, where the radar also fails during snow due to frozen snow. in a BMW I4 the radar is heated. However, the parking sensors continue to work.
@jehm78
@jehm78 7 месяцев назад
@RoamingNorway You probably know this, but remember that new studded winter tires should be driven under 80km/h the first 300 - 500km (the first 50km is 'critical'). And avoid hard acceleration/breaking. That is if you want to keep the 'studs' as much as possible for future use/seasons.

Just picked up Highland RWD few weeks ago at Drammen, was driving home just after that crazy snowfall in Oslo, had a lot of snow on roads, but I could drive close to speed limit in most stretches, up to 70 (no E6 etc..), and it handles pretty well. There was one right turn on the downhill where I had a bit of fishtail when I started to break during the bend, which I quickly corrected by releasing the break :) So far I'm still very careful and usually driving slower than usual, because I don't want to risk it and test when I could lose the grip on turns.. Especially on country roads. But as you said, heavy vehicle, low center of gravity, super smart ESP and TC, all contributes to a good handling in winter conditions even with studless tires.

I’m struggling between M3 RWD and AWD. Since you seem to be in Norway, if you have a chance to take your M3 to a supercharger / high speed charger at some point when it’s sub-zero (the colder the better), I’d really love to know what kinds of charging speeds the M3 RWD is getting in cold. The charging performance of that LFP battery in freezing temperature is a big question mark, and probably the biggest factor that will either make me go for the RWD / AWD. Thanks a bunch! :)
@gust9464
@gust9464 7 месяцев назад
The U.S. 2024 RWD has 2170 Panasonic batteries that are just limited to more range. It also has less speakers and no fog lights. However, the do have HW4. The other issue with the RWD it takes longer to precondition, but does charge faster after 50% state of charge. For the price in the US right now the RWD is super cheap after the federal tax credit of 7,500. Basically you can get a 2024 RWD for approximately $35,000. The LR & Performance models also have awesome deals.

My small suggestion for your editing, if you may. When you have long monologs, like in this video - the tunnel sequence, it would look much smoother if you detach the audio from the video track and cut it off just the audio, leaving the video track running smoothly above. Nobody would see or know that but you would eliminate the jerky chops. I think that would improve the overall watching experience. Just a small tip from my experience. Always fun to watch your videos, cheers! With today's interest rates deal for model Y in Norway, it's a steal :)

Yes even the awd Tesla's are rwd unless alot of power is used or grip starta to loosen. There is one slight exception - model 3 LR awd. With acc. boist sends alot of power to the front wheels. Just on wet road you can get it to slip out of a corner - even power slide on all 4 for a short while.

But I think this is newer models only. At least something has happened, because the AWD i my Model 3 LR (early-2021 Fremont model from Dec. 2020 with 580km WLTP) feels different compared to newer cars. I have yet to make my car slip even in snow, while newer cars I have tried seem to slip even on wet roads. Front end on newer cars also feels more unstable during acceleration imo. Got the acc. boost in 2023, but dont feel a difference in the AWD, only the aggressiveness. I also noticed this January, when we got a lot of snow in my area that people with LR Model Ys got stuck with their rear wheels and their cars didnt pull on the front wheels.

@Paul-cj1wb 7 месяцев назад
Please note that the new Model S and X are superior in charging speeds to this BYD blade battery. They hold speeds of over 250kw for a very long time and deliver far more kilowatts in the same time frame as this model. Yes, this battery is smaller and feels like its very fast (and it is compared to other LFP Teslas) and this charging is absolutely fantastic for LFP, but it's far from the best charging Tesla. And even an 800v Kia EV6 delivers nearly 30% more kilowatts than this EV in the same time frame. You can watch Bjorn's comparison to see this. This feels faster because of the smaller battery size and indeed is very impressive for such a small battery, but 800v and other chemistries are still significantly faster. For example, the new Taycan stays at over 300kws to 65% SoC. With that said, I love this charging curve.
@RoamingNorway
@RoamingNorway 7 месяцев назад
There are better charging EVs, but this one is way more efficient than EV9 and significantly more than S & X. So it’ll drive much further than those, given the same amount of energy in the battery.
@Paul-cj1wb
@Paul-cj1wb 7 месяцев назад
@@RoamingNorway Correct. Point taken. I understand that. Those are heavier vehicles. Even the EV6. I was just referring to your comment that this was the best charging Tesla. But I would also say that the new Model S is not that far off as far as it's efficiency. It can get around 400 miles or 640 kilometers even though it's heavier. I understand it's not a small SUV like the Y, but it's as large or ever slightly larger overall. And you can almost get as much stuff in it with that large hatchback trunk opening.
@RoamingNorway
@RoamingNorway 7 месяцев назад
From what I have seen and experienced on the Model S Palladium, it does not charge better than this one. It holds 250 kW for longer than the the ones before, but still only to around 30%. This one can get 175 kW when you plug in at 50%, where Palladium gets 140 kW and dropping fast. Model S wins on looks though! @@Paul-cj1wb

Nice video! I am wondering how Blade LFP battery behaves in cold temperatures + long downhills. From my experience with M3 2021 MIC LFP, battery usually "saturates" and regen braking decreases notably after recharging the battery for some seconds/km. Did you observe something similar while going down the mountain?

I have not experienced any problems in hills. Maybe it us too flat where I live. However when the battery is cold soaked after a night in some minus Celsius, there is no regen at all without pre-conditioning. When it is a couple of plus outside you get some usable regen from start. Of course if you just charged to 100% also that doesn't help. I don't know if the CATL battery is better in the cold?

I think that Bjørn's 1000km challenge shows that the Model Y RWD is so fast and efficient that the road is the limiting factor. The CATL version got a faster time than the BYD version because he used the faster roads on the Sweden route for that one. Charging time is really not a practical issue any more with these cars, especially not when travelling on slowish roads like in Sweden and Norway. If you hammer on the Autobahn, sure, then you might want a bigger battery and higher charging speed to make up for the consumption.
