Nice review. You reference it as the parka but I think it’s actually the phantom alpine jacket. The parka has a much longer cut I believe? Title to the video says jacket! Also the parka doesn’t come in that blue color!
Bought the parka which looks a lot like the jacket in the video from REI with their $20 off sale for 279. I'm 5'8" 165lbs. Got the medium and has plenty of room for a mid layer, be it a Decathlon down jacket or a thick Irish wool sweater. Didn't realize how heavy it would be, a good thing to me. Only mod I did was install snake knot zipper pulls on all 4 zipper toggles. If you're a big dude, MH has XL only on sale for 199.
Great review as always, thank you. I'll never understand why some manufacturers choose not to list down fill weights. I once reached out to The North Face and asked what the down fill weight was on their Pumori Down Belay Jacket was and they told me it was "proprietary." Like I'm going to steal their info and make my own jacket to their specs - Absolutely ridiculous. How are you supposed to gauge a jacket's warmth without knowing how much down insulation they used? I tip my hat to Rab, Mountain Equipment and Feathered Friends for always posting fill weights; whether it's down or synthetic. Why play games and not disclose vital information?!
Yes! I am with you. I have a really nice Mountain Equipment with 8oz of down as well. That is what I am basing this guess on (for reference). I hear great things about Feathered Friends as well! Thanks for the thoughtful and helpful note. Really appreciate it! PS - I am wearing the Phantom right now as I camping on Vail Pass. Nice and warm!
Please review Rab, Mountain Equipment, and Montane. I love MHW but have discovered these other brands. They have innovative designs and would like to learn more about them.
Hello Julio! Good call on those awesome European brands. I have a ME down puffy that is the absolute best. It’s like 8oz of 850 down in a 16oz package. I hope to work with Arab as well. Thanks for the stoke!
Hmm sewn through baffles.. for a winter jacket of that weight, I'd prefer one with box baffles. Examples: Haglofs Reliable (I own it), Montbell Permafrost, or the Patagonia AlpLoft
The Patagonia Alploft is more comparable to the MH Phantom Belay Parka, which IS a heavier jacket and does have box baffle construction. The Alpine Hooded Jacket is a slightly lighter jacket overall.
