Mountain Lion (Puma) vs. Dog Tracks - How to Tell Them Apart

In this video, I go into detail on how to tell apart the frequently confused tracks of domestic dogs and mountain lions. I show the tracks side by side and describe the features that will help you tell apart the tracks of these two species. Because their tracks are close in size, and have the same number of toes, they get mixed up a lot! By using these clues, you can better tell apart their tracks.

Very well explained. Thanks. The gait pattern also helps to differentiate between domestic dog tracks and, for instance, wolf tracks. As stated, domestic dogs tend to wander back and forth a lot checking out scents, so the pattern tends to be relatively busy and "sloppy", whereas wolf tracks tend to be very precise and linear, with the rear print often superimposed on the front print.

From Santa Cruz Mtns., CA. Just saw a scat on our trail, just like your film, like nothing I’ve ever seen - so big we suspected cougar. Wonderful to have that so clearly and quickly confirmed by your excellent film. Also today someone else saw clearly a big cougar itself on our driveway - also very rare - I’ve never seen one in my many years here, tho I know they are here and can be close wo being seen. Just watched this and your MT Lion scat explaination. Wow.... lucky find. Thank you! I have been looking up Mt Lion attacks. Wondering how long before they are everywhere again. They kept telling people in CT that there were none there until one from the Dakotas was hit by a car.... They are very illusive, I can imagine them loving the area Summer Wells went missing from 110 Ben Hill Road Rogersville Hawkins Co TN.... Gone in an instant.. a animalistic scream ... two foot prints farther away from the house on neighbors property. It would make perfect sense.

@@beartracker777 Could you by chance look this up ? As they are tracking sightings of MT lion in TN the cats appear to be traveling North and East. While there is a lot of other clutter in the case I really feel this is a possibility. What are the chances you could either consult on the case or perhaps recommend someone closer ? I realize they seem to travel quite a bit and may have just been passing through... but they also could have established in the area. If they can find scat in the area could they tell by DNA if there are any human remains in it ? 7 Months later ? Sorry , my brain is stuck on recovery of this child... if it is possible in any way.

That is either a baby mountain lion or a bobcat print. Bobcat prints are the size of a large dog's prints, for walking on snow. Bobcats got big feet, but adult mountain lion prints are twice their size

Not always. Females and juvenile males have much smaller feet than adult males do. This print is from a 70 pound female.

@@beartracker777 i just noticed her hand in the video. This print is only like 2 inches across, the size of a small dog. That is a tiny print. A large dog print or wolf print in comparison is 3 to 5 inches across. That print might as well be from a large housecat like a mainecoon. The footprint us set deep, so you would think it were from a heavier animal, but this is placed in wet, loosely consolidated sand. If you look carefully, you can even see inprints from raindrops.
