Mountain Rescue with Helicopter Extraction, Embudo Canyon, Albuquerque Foothills 

On March 27, 2024 at approximately 3:30pm Albuquerque Fire Rescue was dispatched to the Embudo Trailhead for reports of a boulder that rolled down a hill in the mountains and possibly crushed three people. HTR1 from AFR arrived on scene first and took command. A total of 11 AFR apparatus as well as Bernalillo County Fire, Bernalillo County Sheriffs, NM State Police, Albuquerque Mountain Rescue, Cibola SAR, Atalayla SAR, NM SAR, and Albuquerque Ambulance responded. Crews worked together to locate the patients over a mile up the mountain in steep terrain. Once located they were triaged, injuries were treated and a plan was made to evacuate the injured. One patient was hiked out with a wheeled stokes basket by rescue crews. Due to the extent of their injuries two patients were evacuated by helicopter, transferred to rescue crews at the landing zone and then taken to a local hospital by ambulance. The entire rescue took about three hours to complete.
