Mountaineer's Route, Mount Webster - Worst Ski Line In The Whites?

In my challenge to ski every route in Presidential Skiing, I knew one of the biggest obstacles would be skiing Mountaineer's Route on Mount Webster. Due to it's SW aspect and large open talus slope, the prevailing NW winds in the Presidential Range tend to strip it of any snow before it can build a base. Until today, there was only one documented account of this line getting skied, and it's from 2010...
This season, a warm up just after a snow event allowed the snow to crust over before the wind could strip it. Making for some interesting, but skiable conditions. On a solo adventure, sparing my partner's the nonsense of bushwacking, side slipping, hop turning, and other shenanigans, I managed to string together a descent. Watch this mix of tense and comical skiing and wonder, is this the worst ski line in the Whites? Or an adventure skier's dream?

this video is sick! I skied this all the way back in 2001, awesome to see someone get it on video. I've had so many people tell me it's impossible over the years, now you've given us video proof

Nice! I’m sure it filled in more back then. I’m a firm believer that it’s all skiing if you believe (and can tolerate some shenanigans). Glad I could provide the evidence!

You're an extremely good technical skier. Great videos Idk how you handle some of these technical lines.

Don't be shy about balming those guide gloves! I have the same ones and it really makes therm soft and even more awesome. Darkens the light brown too!

Are you afraid of tree wells when doing solo backcountry lines? I just watched that famous tree well rescue video from GoPro and the thought didn't let me go while watching you ski solo here. I guess the snow wasn't deep enough in this case, but what's your take on tree wells in general? Are they always in the back of your head when going out solo? I also wouldn't mind a little educational video where you share your thoughts and approach on this matter

Tree wells are certainly a thing, in this case. We had less than two feet of snow on the ground. They’re a much bigger concern in the deeper snowpacks out west. In general, I’m aware the risk of skiing solo is greater. I feel like each season I do less of it. But there are some days/some lines I accept the risk for, and I feel solo days are therapeutic for me.

very little risk of tree wells in New Hampshire, especially in a snow year like this one.

@@lwskiventureit’s very season dependent in the north east. Taking off my skins at the top of Big Jay last March and I sunk down past my chest and I couldn’t touch the ground

I've wanted to do this for years but got injured so I won't be back until next season. For some reason I thought you were living out west. If I get my skills back quickly enough I'll consider doing this kind of thing next year

have you heard of people hiking up that route? looks like a interesting route to climb/hike.

I have heard an old ice climbing guide named Chris tell me he’s done it. He climbed the ice pitch known as the Bore Tide Slab, which the ski route skirts around, and topped out the Mountaineer’s Route. I imagine it could be done as a summer scramble, if you went around the rock slab, or pitched it out as a slab climb.

@extreme_ryan_delena
@extreme_ryan_delena 4 месяца назад
It’s called skins. You put them on the bottom of your skis, and they allow you to slide uphill without sliding back down. You take them off at the top and lock your heels back in
