Thank you for this video, I just did this end of Nov 23, for my florida winter trip. Used 2 identical 6k btu air conditioners. A couple things, the drain water from the evap flows down the inside case bottom, and the fan on the compressor side is made to flip water on what would be the condenser, it was flipping water out of the ac onto the floor. To solve this I used 1/2" cpvc pipe one end shaped square and glued it directly to the foam outlet in the back side of the evap foam housing drain port and put an elbow down through the ac drain pan at the very back bottom and piped it directly down through the floor. So no more water in the case for the fan to fling it. Second I installed a Relay wired from the compressor on off relay to the Condenser fan, and power cord in wiring so the con fan cycles on and off with the compressor. I used r410 in this r32 system, just have to tweak the oz's alllitle, 2 months in and it working beautifully. Thanks again for this idea.

Great video, thank you. I would love to do this and feel that I probably could with the right tools, but I am not sure it makes sense to buy all of these tools when I am not an HVAC technician by trade. I'm looking at models designed for semi trucks but they are unfortunately $3500+. I don't see any other reliable option unfortunately. There used to be a couple portable mini-splits around $500-800 but they had universally awful reviews and seem to have been discontinued and have really poor reliability. Looks like I am stuck cutting a massive hole to slide out a window unit when needed, or to buy the $3500 prebuilt option. I am trying to run off solar so the efficiency and low wattage are a requirement. The roof units and portable hose-type units are generally very poor efficiency, very power hungry, and very loud/big.

i know you don't have room to mount the condensor properly facing the wind like car's radiator fins are mounts. But you should at least rotate your installation 90 degrees (such that the pipes are facing toward the sides, not forward and backward) so that the oncoming wind is able to go through the fins. That's the better orientation for increased airflow and thus increased heat pump efficiency
@mercedessprinterdiy8556
@mercedessprinterdiy8556 4 года назад
i only run the ac wen parked and using land power so there is no need to face the condenser towards the wind, now if i was running it wile driving i see your excellent point, thanks

You don't want to 'disbalance' the electric motor by cutting off a metal shaft that weighs a few grams? But it's OK to remove a large spinning fan designed to catch alot of air, hmmm. Seems like you've already destroyed the balance that was designed into that motor.

There is a build where they put a wall across the entire back of the van, closing off the "garage" area, just forward enough for a std. window air conditioner installed in the wall to have the unit stick back, as it would outside a window, into that back airspace. I'm considering it, or getting someone to "fix" my DIY attempt of what's shown here, by just hacking the lines and trying to solder them myself to under the van, then get someone to check for leaks and fill it. But in the wall build, he would just open the back door to vent it, but if you positively vented the space, floor and ceiling, you could run it with the doors closed... something like a couple of aluminum horse trailer vents that tilt open, but mounting them into the floor to open downwards, and then something like a Maxxair that can run even closed in the rain, and you'd have plenty of venting to counter the heat building up in that space. You could even put a separate vent that you could close into the wall, that way you could run the Maxxair when the air conditioning is off and unneeded, and pull air through the vent in the wall from the living space, to get the "normal" benefit of a roof vent. With vanlife popularity what it is, I'm more than a little surprised the build shown here isn't an off the shelf DIY unit. Or even just a kickstarter to have a bunch built. Mini splits are shipped all day that a sensible person can install and check for leaks in the lines, and worst case, have a tech afterwards fix a leak and refill... This is basically turning a window AC into a mini split...

Hi, really fun to watch you work on this! I have a converted Sprinter Van, but so far I have not figured out the A/C problem. I've thought of buying a mini-split heat pump. My question is: does the condenser have to be vertical? Or can it be horizontal like the one you mounted under your van? How important is that? I'd love to mount the outside unit of the mini-split under my van horizontally. Will that cause any problems? Thanks!
@mercedessprinterdiy8556
@mercedessprinterdiy8556 4 года назад
On a mini split the compressor is inside of the condenser and you cannot tell the condenser because you'll burn the compressor the reason I did mine like that is because a compressor is vertically inside the van not on the van. Hope this help
@andrewfyakim525
@andrewfyakim525 4 года назад
Hi Capt.... I'm watching this and am mesmerized.... I would never have guessed it was possible to use a common window unit for that.... Great job! How do you keep the coils clean under the van? Where I live (some dirt and gravel roads) that coil would get clogged a lot.
@mercedessprinterdiy8556
@mercedessprinterdiy8556 4 года назад
Thank you Andrew I knew you were going to like this video and soon I will upload the next video to show you the results. When I made this split system on the window air conditioner some professional air conditioner technicians set the disc cannot work but I proved them wrong it works incredible I was going to do the same thing to the but with the movement of the ocean is better to have the window air conditioner all enclosing the unit that way doesn't fall apart
@mercedessprinterdiy8556
@mercedessprinterdiy8556 4 года назад
I usually drive the van 90% of the time on pavement and I don't have a problem once a year I just hold it down and that is it and my van has big mud flaps and that protects the condenser from rocks and debris
