That's a pretty sketchy mount still to me: 1. I wouldn't have an open capacitor to the weather. At a minimum you should put silicone over the area where the terminals meet the wire connectors to weather seal that area. Up a step from that bare minimum would be a small waterproof box that is bolted in place to hold it with grommets for the wires entering. 2. Despite the add'l metal brackets you fashioned, the only thing holding this entire assembly to your frame is that PLASTIC FAN HOUSING FRAME behind the fan. That frame, in the original design, was engineered to hold only the weight of the fan. There is no way I wouldn't take some mild steel, and bend it in a vice to make a perfect shape to attach to the frame on both sides of the condensor and wrap below the condensor on the ends, with silicone to cushion the two riding together. This whole assembly still relies on the long term holding power of PLASTIC, and now you've increased the weight it has to hold. That is the best way to hold a water tank under a van, and it would work here to remove all risk from a plastic housing holding everything over thousands of miles of bumps over several years of repeated stress.

Cool installation, very stealth. Since its a 120 volt unit, I assume only intended for static operation. You might consider a "road shield" for the condenser so all the hard work is protected when traveling. An RV electrical plug might be worth considering as well. Thanks for sharing the project.

Hey, thanks for posting how to do this. I just did this in a Transit van today. So far it works great. I hooked up the condenser fan motor white run wire to the compressor run wire, so the condenser fan only runs when the compressor is running. Time will tell if I did all of it correctly. And yes It took me a little over 10 hours to complete. Thanks for making great videos.

Thank you Andrew I really appreciate you the great comment , and I love Refrigeration and I like to invent things, a lot of professional Refrigeration mechanics said that this could not be possible but every time I do work like this I prove them wrong this air conditioners compressors I'm not meant to be split because the compressor doesn't have enough power to pump Refrigeration upwards but my invention is more using the compressor to shoot the refrigerant down to the condenser and it goes up via gas that's why it works and it looks like they do not understand gravity on refrigeration. Build your own DIY Lithium battery and put a couple solar panels up. These window units are around only 500 watts after startup. I'm converting a 159" ProMaster, and will have 585 watts of solar ($1 a watt for panels), and a 200ah Lithium DIY battery. You can find build videos on RU-vid of how to build batteries from individual Lifepo4 cells, basically you buy 4 individual cells from AliExpress of whatever size you want the battery to be in AH (search for "Lifepo4 cells" and whatever AH, they are 3.2V each, so 4 in series make a 12v battery), and then an appropriately sized "BMS" or Battery Management System, which just monitors the battery and shuts things down if it goes over or under voltage, and usually offers a temperature sensor so you can't charge it when too cold (Lithium doesn't like charging at near freezing temps)(search for "DALY BMS" on AliExpress, they even have ones with Bluetooth apps so you can see everything on your phone). For $400, I'll have a 200ah Lithium Battery DIY, whereas a Battle Born would cost you $900 for just a 100ah...

I teally like this diy split air conditioner. But the places I go, muddy, stones rocks, undergrowth etc, especially the mud, probably damage it. I am thinking is it possible to put it on roof? Or design a new one with 2-3 smaller fans blowing horizontal and heat exchanger that is long and narrow? That way I can hide it just under the raised solar panels which are 7 inches above the roof. There are a few 12 volts air-conditioning units available but in USA, it cost a cut throat $4600 plus. In Taiwan, a similar unit cost less than US$200. China has a few models cost US$200 to 600. I am not buying anything China. But if the split unit cost $4500 in US while a similar one cost $250 in China or a window unit cost $200 in Taiwan, I don't mind buying g overseas and pay shipping cost to get it. Or consult professional like you to see if we can rig a rooftop unit with market existing available parts and make it happen?

I have a couple of questions if you can answer I'd be really grateful: 1) so the basic principle is if you separate the condenser from the rest of the window AC than you must make sure the condenser is at the same height as the compressor or below it right? I'm assuming the copper pipe between then can't be too long too? and 2) can I take any window air conditioner and do this modification or do I have to look for a certain type with certain features to make this modification work? I've been watching other videos of people using 9,000 btu mini split air conditioners on their RV's or sprinter/ transit vans but I have a 2002 honda odyssey, I don't know if having the AC unit outside would fit at the back of the minivan. I still have to watch this video a few more times, I don't quite grasp how this system works or what wires you are connecting.

The unit is split with a fan and underneath the van like in your videos. And then a unit inside. Also the unit inside can blow hot air into the van as a source of heat. The refidgerant is shared by the engine ac and the rear ac in the back. Right now I’m my conversion I can leave the unit in the van because it doesn’t work unless the engine is on... so I need to take it out but that will be hard. It is the EVAPORATOR that makes CONDENSATE water. The condenser gets really hot; you won't get any condensate off it. The evaporator gets really cold; the hot humid air condenses on the cold metal fins and drips water that is called condensate water. (sometimes called the beer can effect) You drain that water out of the sump of the evaporator. Periodically you have to clean that sump and treat it with an anti-bacterial like bleach or it will grow something bad like Legionaires disease. It also smells bad.

@@mobileempire5522 I have an ac in the partition like you have, and i know what you mean about it not working too good. On a 90 degree day, it probably can only keep the inside at 75-80 degrees, because its only working for 3 minutes then off 3 minutes again and again. I have been playing with adding fans to help circulate the heat out of the cabin better. I think thats a way easier method then dealing with all the work of extending the condenser to another location. @brianmi40
@brianmi40 3 года назад
@@redeemedheathen Curious if you insulated between the cab where the hot air needs to be vented and the living space, and also how well the van is insulated overall? I would recommend positive cross ventilation, in one window, blow out the other to reduce the heat there. You can buy sheets of "HDPE" that are 1/8" thick, and easily fashion a custom shape of window vent, just cut the middle piece to fit 1/2" into the window slot at top and all the way around, and then bolt on two outside layers (one on either side) that extend down an inch below the bottom, roll down the window, insert it, and roll the window back up to capture the glass in between those outside two outside layers. HDPE is strong, cuts easily with a jigsaw and its only drawbacks are no paint sticks and sunlight wears it out with UV, so for daylight use you'd need to skin it somehow. But now you can fashion any kind of opening you want in it, such as mounting a screen and 5v USB fan in one, and a large screened area in another for the intake. HDPE can be easily heat bent if you want to add a layer that you bend into a rain guard layer on the outside also. And if need be, add some insulation board on the "wall" between the cab and the living space. I made one of these to use a portable air conditioner in the van during my conversion... I'm about to start my ProMaster 159 conversion and will be documenting how to make these.
