Mounting RotoPax Fuel Containers To THULE Cargo Basket / Roof Rack - w/ Lock Failure (Temp Install)

This is a temporary configuration, that is why it is only ziptied.
Ideally I will make an adjustable mount for my solar panels and have the RotoPax & other camping supplies stored underneath the solar panels.
I initially went with two two gallon fuel cans because I thought they would be easier to use and maneuver. After a summer of use I decided the 4 gallon was a better solution. Especially if you have to lift the can/s off vertically.
Just like most the reviews say online, THESE LOCKS ARE TERRIBLE.

I am trying to find a vertical mounting solution so I can use a siphon hose to fill the truck tank and leave the Rotopax mounted.

That's an Awesome Idea Mark. I believe they make "Auxiliary Fuel Cells" for Trucks that simply bolt to the bed of the truck and work through a gravity fed system. These tanks might be a little larger then your looking for but it should be the same concept. I'm opting to go with a 16 gallon fuel cell that will be mounted in my spare tire area. I did get a fuel pump to help pump it into the fill tube or I might pump it directly into the main tank. If it was plumbed into the main tank I wouldn't be able to help some who ran out of gas as easy.

Long term how has the fuel can worked out besides the lock failure? I’m looking at doing something similar with their water jugs on my roof rack. Floor is similar to yours. How did you end up mounting the base plate?

I love the RotoPax cans. I no longer have the roof rack/cargo basket setup, but I did save the fuel tanks. My only concern for you would be lifting the two water tanks out of the basket . The two tanks twisted together tend to sag in the middle while full, making it difficult to remove. That is why I switched to a solid 4 gallon tank. I left the base plate secured with tiptoes for 3 years. I did ad some styrofoam underneath the plate to prevent some rattling. yikes. I'm trying to figure out how to mount my 5 gallon tanks and was about to buy the rotopax. Can you suggest another option? Right now I'm leaning toward just using ratchet straps and some sort of bike lock to keep gas thieves away. Really not sure.

Are you still going to use the RotoPax tanks or do you plan on using another type of spare fuel tank? Most people use ratchet straps. If you get a steel cable bike lock, think about anything you might want to lock up in the future and get the appropriate length.

@@HondaFit4Adventure It's another brand. I got a great price on two 5 gal tanks for $55 each! I'm so glad you think the ratchet straps are okay. And thanks for the idea on the length of the cable too. Using straps is going to save me money and time and that is awesome. Thanks so much for getting back to me.

It was the same type of lock. After reading about the lock failure and then experiencing it myself, I couldn't believe I trusted the lock on the other side and continued to use it.
